Acryla gouache is not actually gouache paint. It’s acrylic. It’s a bit of a marketing ploy calling it gouache but admittedly they are quite nice to use. I much prefer proper gouache though. It’s velvety and lush and doesn’t have that polymer plastic feel and look and it doesn’t have chemicals like formaldehyde in it. It’s gorgeous to paint with and looks like oil paint when used properly (don’t use it like watercolour). Gouache is always my paint of choice for it’s purity. It’s highly pigmented and the binder is only gum arabic. Only use the good quality gouache though like Windsor &Newton or Holbein.

Oh, Sophie! This might be my favorite video ever! I count the ways: 1) the cute water vessel that I always look for. 2) your new process here with the printout. 3) the calm, relaxing way you painted on that print. 4) the COLORS! 5) the way your gouache covered this particular paper. 6) GREEN and the other hippy colors (you are right about those 1960-70 color schemes). The colors then were very concentrated. There weren’t a lot of pastels unless you were an infant or pregnant. 7) the painting itself (and who wouldn’t want to be a leaf painted by Sophie McPike?). It’s all completely satisfying, and even better because I’ll get a little print in the mail. I LOVE PATREON! Luvya too! 💜💜💜

What a lovely cozy way to start my morning😍I’m also a real 60s 70s hippy dippy woowoo mama so the color palette is perfection 🤌So glad you made this piece and didn’t let it just fade away in a sketchbook. Way to go and upcycle that beauty! 🌿🌱🍂
And yes, printing the sketch onto the paper IS a total game changer! I tried it for the first time last October when I made a witchy Ouija style print to paint for a video cuz I didn’t want to redraw all the teeny details, ugh so much work. It went well *except* that I kept the line work fully black and the ink was not waterproof so it did smudge a bit in spots, but next time I’ll def make it super transparent! Good tip, Soph!👌

I just started painting although have been a creative all my life, maybe using pencil and pen to draw portraits. I love colour so much though. I tried watercolour maybe a year ago and although there was a lot I loved about it, it was far too intimidating and I gave up. I have a bunch of cheaper acrylic paint that I recently started using and I fell in love with paint and it seems far more natural to me than watercolour. However, I noticed with acrylic I want to water it down. I have gouache that I want to start using because it seems I do enjoy the water based nature but now I am thinking acrylic gouache. Right now I have much cheaper paints so I can learn and grow more comfortable with this medium but man, would I love to work with Holbein one day 😍 it looks so amayzin’!

It’s such an exciting journey!! Some acrylic paint is honestly really difficult to use at times, so we find ways to make it easier, like watering it down and singing it like watercolour. I honestly suggest getting four tubes of the Holbein acrylic gouache (yellow, blue and opera/pink and white (maybe a black too)) working with good quality acrylic gouache is soooooo much easier than cheaper quality, and you can mix every colour you need with those ones! 💜

I have a question about acrylic gouache- you say you love that it drives permanent and doesn’t reactivate- do you just make exactly as much as you need? Do you find that you end up wasting quite a bit? I’m coming from gouache and like that you can reactivate in the palette but not on paper, but I’m scared of wasting acrylic gouache

Yeah, I generally mix it up bit by bit. I find it easier to mix the colour again rather than making a massive amount of it. If I have left over paint on my palette I'll paint washes over some sketchbook spreads to draw over later :) Or, I'll scoop it into a small container and keep it in the fridge for a couple day.
I have also been meaning to try wet palettes, too, for those days when mix too much.

Working intuitively is a masterful skill but seeing these solutions definitely feels more accessible to someone ( like myself) who isn’t so confident in their free styling choices. Also reminiscent to coloring cells in the traditional animation process. Thanks for sharing this!
Your color choices are always tops 🙌
