Consider this - most of the men that fought in the civil war couldn't vote.
Perhaps that literacy test was originally intended to quell the minority vote...
However if the knowing the answers to such questions (like ones presented in the video) were required today, I'd support that idea.
In this modern age of information, where (almost) all of human knowledge is available in the palm of your hand, we have little excuse for not knowing such things.
Requiring such knowledge would help people in being better informed voters
As it stands, a majority of voters are under or misinformed, receiving most of their information from corporate media outlets, social media or (believe it or not) entertainers.
Implementing such a system would (essentially) force people to educate themselves to better understand the government and what each candidate is actually about, making the general public less easily manipulated by lofty or divisive political rhetoric.
An informed and educated citizenry is a powerful citizenry and one any government or it's political players have trouble coercing or wresting anything from.
Knowledge is power.
Yes, citizen tests for all citizens.
Shouldn't have skipped over the Jacksonian movement, which spread Universal White Male Suffrage by 1856. That aside, I like the video's style.
now we have 18 year olds that dont know what 3x3x3 or "name 2 countries bordering the US" that can vote.
Voter ID laws amount to nothing less than a poll tax, and I still can't believe everyone went along with disenfranchising those living in poverty. I once had someone take issue with me, saying that a voter ID is free. I had to remind him that it costs money to acquire the documentation that one needs to have, in order to get a voter ID, and it still amounts to the poor being stripped of their right to vote, just because they are poor.

in india where there is lot of poverty compared to US there is compulsary voter ID, even if a poor person doesn't have two meal a day to eat he has voter id and it is easily accessible and India has second largest population , if they can do it then why can't the most powerful and rich country in the world.
Without identifying the person how could you ensure one person one vote , and no meddling in voting , which is the bedrock of voting rights
@@aabhasrai303 That's a good question. Before voter ID laws, I never needed an ID to vote, I just had to tell them my name and they would mark it off the list of names of people who were designated to vote at that location. You see, in order to steal my vote, Someone would have had to know where my designated polling station was and they would have had to hope I never showed up to vote, because the people at the polling station kept track of who had or had not voted. So, when I showed up to vote and someone had already voted, saying they were me, they would have known something was up. This is why we didn't have widespread voter fraud, and why there was no reason to enact voter ID laws. Well, there was a reason, they wanted to make it harder for poor people to vote, because poor people don't usually vote for the GOP. I hope that response wasn't to incoherent lol

@@ChickSage if that were true than there won't be hundreds of countries enacting voter id laws even third world countries have voter id laws. I just want to make a point that you don't have to remove voter id you just have to make them easily accessible which is definitely possible in country like US. ID does have very much significance otherwise hotels, airports and daily life needs won't require them .
@@aabhasrai303 I think they could make it easier to get voter IDs, but that would defeat the purpose of making it harder for poor people to vote. Plus, we didn't need them. I would understand enacting voter ID laws, if there had been a significant amount of voter fraud, but there hadn't been, because the system worked just fine, without voter ID laws. I don't have a problem with the concept of using a voter ID. As far as I'm concerned, they can implement all of the useless safeguards they want to, as long as it doesn't make it more difficult to vote.

The landowner part should still be in place, if you dont own a piece of this country why should you have a say in how the land is governed... this is why the metro area of each state or about 5% of the land is blue and keeps winning elections.
I should have a say in how this nation is governed because I live here, pay taxes, and obey the law. A lot of good men laid down their lives to secure that right for me and I would gladly lay down mine to keep you from taking that right away.

I already do have a say, where are you from? You see, in the USA, we have a Constitution and according to it, I'm a citizen and as such, I have the right to vote. That is just one of the things that makes this such a great country.

the right to vote was originally to be only for land owners, the people who own the land to say how it is governed, now we have tiny blue dots in every state deciding elections in metropolitan areas.. we own the land... we should be the ones to govern the laws on our "owned" land... not a small spec of congregated people in metro areas... WE OWN THE LAND!!!!

Voting Rights has been the a problem since the very foundation of Democracy in Ancient Greece. Socrates, believed that only educated people on issues pertaining to the state should vote. To prevent demogoguery, a populist from ever sitting to power which might one day crown himself a king. And for that he was sentence to death.
The same problem plagued the Roman Republic, thier fix was the patron system. Where the upper classes of society offers protection and security to the common people in terms of money, food and legal help on which they become clients. Their downfall brought forth by internal family struggles between the upper classes which by default included their clients.
The American Republic also tried to fix such things by intruducing the electoral system, which is currently being put into question.
At the end of the day, democracy and voting rights exist to prevent a single person holding to much power. The irony is, it is now put to the people to the people to decide who will they give that power.
At the end of the day, voting should not become a right but a skill to see through those incompetent populist.
It should be remembered that Socrates died for his idea, that an uneducated voter invites incompetent politicians which ultimately leads to curruption and eventually invites a dictator.

This video says the founding fathers left the right to vote to the states. The republic also avoided a fight over representation in states where the overall population had fewer white land owners who were numerically outnumbered by native residents and trafficked people.
Too many people that dont contribute and dont have skin in the game have the right to vote, and this shouldnt be like this.
That sounds good, but the unintended consequence of that would be crushing economic mobility. Then again, with the universal system you run the risk of those without property depriving those with property of their rights, and then nobody has property. Which is worse?

Excuse me…America is NOT a Democracy; America IS a Representative Republic. Whoever created this video needs to change the end (the last line of dialogue). No wonder so many people don’t understand the difference.
They still find ways to limit black men from voting...or owning guns...getting jobs...etc. makes me think we haven’t come far enough.
