Sammy, you made my blood pressure go up just thinking about that. I've been doing this for 23 years and I am usually the biggest wuss when it starts snowing. I was in a situation a few weeks ago where everybody way passing me and I thought maybe I could go faster.... then I remember that this has worked for me for 23 years, I'm going to keep on just driving my own truck. By the way, I live in PA just 1 hour from where this happened to you. It's not just the southern hillbilly's like you lol. The smart guys get TF off the road!! Thanks for the video
I'm not a new driver, but just think about pulling doubles going along, and one short 5 mile stretch turns into ice, and you see the flashing lights ahead with a bunch of slide-offs, you get slowed down, you're creeping along white-knuckled at 5 mph and then the side winds start pushing you towards the shoulder......🥶
Sammy I am like you and I PARK as soon as I CAN in that type of conditions and I live in MINNESOTA NOT WORTH BEING OUT THERE! Too many bad things can happen. Plus I always have to be extra careful pulling open barrel tankers.
hwy 89 in northern California during snow at night. its like 75 miles of nothing but high trees surrounding you. only 1 opposite lanes. spooky as hell. i almost tried to go through it but right before i did, i asked myself "how would you feel if you got stuck 20 miles in and had no cell service and could not escape the situation. my heart started pounding. also i didnt see any tire tracks from other vehicles. i turned right around back to flying Js.
I know this is basic but don’t run cruise control in winter weather or any wet weather. Had one of the White Volvo Mafia pass me on 80/90 in Indiana, just past the exit for 69 he hit ice on the overpass over 69 . Truck went a bit sideways but because he had the cruise on she wound herself up got traction and shot him into the guard wall. Lots of plastic and a shattered pride.
A lot depends on the area your in. Midwest(not hard facts) uses sand and salt. Northeast has chemicals. The key is the refreeze. Google can explain but if you have melting during the day then a hard 20f below it can refreeze even with salt. Tricky very tricky but traffic maps are your friend. Chains solve most problems but it’s a whole other issue. Every trucker needs to learn the freeze points with salt and sand and chem. But then how much was applied? Traffic map. Edit: a lot of states have road up date websites as well.
The freezing point of salt water depends on the concentration of salt in the water: 10% salt solution: Freezes at 20°F (-6°C) 20% salt solution: Freezes at 2°F (-16°C) Saturated salt water: Freezes at -21.1°C (-6.0°F)
Running light isn’t bad once you know how to handle it. Starters with you Jake’s start only the lowest setting. Remover going to slow can be just as bad as going to fast.
I don’t make fun of this South! I love the south as I get older! But I was born in the winter so I love the winters! There’s one thing about winters! After you get done driving through a snowstorm, always in the daytime! Is that you get to see the beautifulness of the snow around you! It’s so beautiful and gorgeous It’s pretty I find it! I felt like my most magical days of driving was going through friggin snowstorms! And coming out on the other side! And just looking at all the snow sitting on the house is the trees there’s just something beautiful about it when the clouds are just parted the right way, and the sun comes out. It’s magnificent! Yeah, I know trying to keep the truck in between the ditches trying not to hit all the idiots. Everyone’s going off the road! It’s wonderful!
Make cents keep pushing hey if someone is going to get there own authority and doesn't want to use there personal home address what other options are there fmcsa says no to virtual office, no to po box so can be done
I got a PO Box for mailing. Then got permission with the place I park my truck to use their addy as my physical address 👊 I went through the same thing with fmcsa. They all say, this is just the way we always did it. Even though it’s a security threat for our families back home when we’re gone. If the truck is gone, the man of the house is too.
Sammy check out the MICHELIN XDN2 drive tires great tires. I pull tankers and maxed on weight all the time and I can get over 300,000 miles out of them.
PA-ND regional driver here. 10 winters. Jake brake on. It’s a bell weather for traction. It won’t kick u out. It makes only ONE tire slip. All other tires keep traction. Also I run Michelin XDN2. Cause Im not on welfare
Think of it like an ice cube, ever stuck your hand in the freezer to grab an ice cube and it stuck to your fingers. It was frozen dry. Then the opposite is trying to pick up a wet ice cube- you can't even hang on to it, it will slide right out if your hand
👍👍 These freaking automatic drivers doing 30+ mph through the parking lots is insane. Would tell them to keep it on the low side, but they would have no idea
“GA with a can load” and you’re going to Saratoga springs? You load outa Rome GA? Bc I’m literally on my way to Rome GA now for a can load to Saratoga springs lol Btw, glad you made it outa there safe!
Yessir 😎 good load and cool town. Go up and down through downtown. It’s a hallmark movie town 🙌 the short cuts are through the park and will get you a ticket. Parking on lot, over night 🙌👌
At 2am, most everyone is off the road so i can throw some chains and continue without many around me. Is my heart beating faster than normal? Yes, but im within my tolerance level. But most of my snow experience is on the west. Only some OH and PA.
True that if it doesn't make $ then why doit. I have bin driving for 37 years and that snow ice combo sometimes makes me get white nuckles, and when I stop, I drink me some blackberry brandy to get nerves down 😅
I live in upstate New York! 18 years old I got my class B so I could be a garbage truck driver! I’m up at midnight to pick up trash early to avoid traffic! Snow is coming down like a bastard! I can’t see my mirrors! Call the boss about it. I’m going through Fulton. I’m going down under the railroad bridge that crosses-over the road!I can’t see a fu*king thing it is so narly outside! The good thing about a garbage truck is the body is all steel. Once you get a few containers of garbage dumped in your packer! You become an Abraham’s one tank ain’t no snowbank gonna stop your @$$! You’re the snowman now you’re coming through! Elven King Kong don’t got no sh*t on you! Getting up the hill headed towards Volney,NY! After going under the railroad bridge, there’s a light off to the right of this little business! Which, of course is nice. It shows you where you are on the road. I started to get scared because I see lights coming at me in the distance? And I can’t tell which side of the road I’m on! So lights are coming and I’m starting to shake like a leaf on a tree. I can’t believe there’s someone else out here in this sh*t as well! We get to the light at the top of the hill! A stretched out Peterbilt goes past me, haul a skateboard with a load! I was going up the wrong lane while he was going down the wrong lane! That’s how bad it was! That truck driver obviously had some skill cause he was driving around me or we both couldn’t figure out what fu*king lane we were in!
Look I’m probably taking up too much of the comment section now I had another story, but that’s for another time! I honestly wish I could live in the south I really do! I love the South everyone’s cool! It’s like a totally in completely different atmosphere! Unfortunately, I gotta be somewhere where it’s snowing specially, in the winter time! I tell the story of another time when I can remember it could be a couple years from now. I don’t know.

Man!!! It scares the shit out of me, every time. If the road are treated, im good. But… if not and im first into the storm, im a wreck lol

Thanks, Sammy glad you got through that mess👍👍👍
😮omg Sammy! I am happy that you are safe and that you made it!

@ ya, between burney mountain and mt shasta

Be safe out there 🙏
I use to pull doubles up 11 and 15 off 80. It always frooze over night and I was third shift. They always banned doubles overnight, and Mty trailer 😂.
Good Advice thanks 🎉

It can spin your truck around like the rudder on a ship in the wrong situation

New drivers be like what you mean shift it to 1 gear 😂😂😂
👍👍
These freaking automatic drivers doing 30+ mph through the parking lots is insane.
Would tell them to keep it on the low side, but they would have no idea
Essentially all "automatics" are "manual automatics" and allow you to manually shift and lock your gear.

@ good deal! Thank ya sir! I was hoping they had parking because I’ll be there hours before my appointment. So hoping for that or an early loading lol

Pa closed the roads to light loads
And doubles plus no empties. At one point part of 80 was shut down, did the detour through Williamsport
Come on mate, pull your mirrors in and have go. lol
Why didn't you throw some chains?
Sounds like snow on top of Ice. That can be very deceiving. Definitely turn the jake brakes OFF.
