I like how there’s a distinct division between the retro style FPS with the gun closer to the center of the screen, and that’s divided by Goldeneye and Half Life, which popularized the trend of putting the gun closer to the right of the screen.
That small detail just intrigues me how after those games, every game followed that look
The first Crysis was years ahead of its time. Truly a groundbreaking game for graphics and design
It’s graphics on max settings were absolutely amazing. I broke down & bought two GTX275’s to run in SLI & that game still put a hurting on tho’s gpu’s…lol. Suprised they didn’t mention Crysis 2 & 3 on this list of games

@Citizen Of Earth I would say original "modern" fps games were by far the best, with exception of half life ofc, the 2007 - 2013 era was just undeserved. So good. Sadly on I have to agree that we didn’t get any aleast 8/10 fps in like what? 4 yrs, maybe?

Not really maybe in its physics system but FPS na you couldn’t even aim down your sites it was just another generic arcade like rail shooter with average graphics and a more realistic physics system

I remember when Wolfenstein and Doom came out and it looked crazy. Never thought a game could be like that. Never in a million years did I think games would look like they do today.

Bioshock changed my whole outlook on fps games when it came out. Damn what a game.
I'd recommend you to try the System Shock games, Bioshock is the spiritual successor of them. They have a lot of the same mechanics.

I usually didn't like war games, but this was my first one. I loved it, but it was too hard (I was a kid) and never finished it. But I loved the mission placed in a forest (I think it was the second mission). I would love a remake or a remastered.

I played Wolfenstein 3D when I was younger and more recently Return to Castle Wolfenstein, that has to be the best one because I was a little disappointed with The New Order. Glad to see you were introduced to the franchise!

Nice video! There are a few entries that are missing such as Quake III Arena (though until that part I thought there would be a game per year), Unreal (the 1998 game), Return to Castle Wolfenstein (or Wolfenstein Enemy Territory), Unreal Tournament 2004 and Doom 2016.

I noticed that lighting is a huge factor in modern day shooters. The vibrant colors and lighting add to the effect.
Also, Battlefield 3 really took it to a whole new level. That game still holds up today.

I really wish they made a game that had the roleplaying elements of The Elder Scrolls Games and combine it with the high speed action of the Unreal Tournament games. I would play the shit out of that.

It would have been cool if you showed footage captured at their native resolution and framerate. All of the older games were enhanced, I know they definitely weren't that sharp or smooth playing on their original hardware. It would have better demonstrated the evolution.
Yeah. Even when doom 3 came out I had to run it at 800x600 res before upgrading. Quake probably even lower res and a very low framerate in comparison to today. And don't get me started with goldeneye.. outright unplayable if you have the original on n64.
For the first half if the video set your resolution to 240p... et voilà.. ; )
