You might have a point about the format being a problem, but calling the twins “frauds” is kind of an unnecessary low blow. They’ve completely turned things around since the all star break and have been playing like 90+ win team.

Exactly, the main issue with this entire video is the underlying assumption that better overall season record = better team. But obviously, how a team looks and performs in the latter part of the season is more important than the beginning, as injuries and trades can significantly reshape a roster and its potential. The complaint that somehow the Yankees were robbed of a postseason berth by the twins doesn't take into account that the twins have been the better team by almost every metric since the all-star break (42-29 as opposed to the Yankees 33-38, for example, though arguably against weaker opponents on average).

I’m not a Twins fan, but saying that they’re “not a serious contender” is disrespectful. The truth is that the team who goes all the way and wins the world series is the team that gets the hottest and catches the breaks. That’s what makes it entertaining. Even the difference between the league’s best and worst teams is negligible in a short series. If that weren’t the case, the best teams would never lose amd the poorest teams would never win.

In the history of baseball, only 3 teams have ever won the World Series with 87 wins or fewer (in a full 162 game season). The ‘87 Twins, the ‘00 Yankees, and the ‘06 Cardinals.
That’s 3/118 champions, so 2.5%. Also, all of those were won before the playoffs expanded so you had a shorter and easier road to a title.
So I don’t think it’s unfair at all to say the Twins aren’t serious contenders. Is it conceivable that they could win it? Sure, it is within the realm of possibility. But if you seriously analyze the likelihood of it happening, it’s negligible.
Baseball is a HIGHLY parity driven sport, but there are still significant skill gaps that show up more often than not. Fun fact: 92/118 World Series champions had a regular season win total of 95 or more (or they were on pace for that in a shortened season). That’s nearly 80% of all champions ever.

As a Twins fan, I appreciate being able to win a weak division to at least have a shot in playoffs. However, I think this problem is a symptom of the imbalance of small market teams vs big market teams. I’m aware of the statistics that show salary cap doesn’t have a huge impact on who wins the World Series, but small market teams have narrower windows to be great while big market teams seem to be consistently good. Basically, I think the problem is bigger than playoff seeding, but I’m not sure what the solution is.
Also, you sound a little bitter for finally losing the season series to the Twins after 22 years 😉

    • @AndThatsBaseball

There is definitely issues with market sizes in baseball, but I think that comes down to owners who are willing to spend. The twins signed correa, they’ve extended their talent, so they win the division. For that, I commend them.

At that point it’s on the owner to “grow” his team. If they’re businessmen the onus is on them to grow their market and become more desirable for someone to get into. The NFLs olds 12 team format worked great. The number 1 seed would play the lowest remaining seed in the divisional round and the number 2 seed would play the highest remaining seed. I think that would solve some problems. So if the 6 seed beats the 3 seed the 1 seed should always get the “easiest” playoff matchup regardless of divisions. The twins should be rewarded for winning their division so the 3 seed hosts the 6 seed and if the 6 seed is better they should win. As it is now, top 3 seeds are division winners by record and 4/5/6 are wild card by record. 3 does play 6 in the first round, 4 plays 5. Second round #1 seed is already guaranteed the 4 or 5 seed & in reality the 6 seed usually ends up with a similar record to the 4 & 5. Sure #2 could play 4/5 winner if the 6 upsets the 3, then 6 plays 1 - but realistically if you expect to win the world series you can complain about playoff opponents... Just gotta get out there and beat them.

I'm a lifelong die-hard Minnesota Twins fan, and I don't take exception to anything you say. You're 100% right. But I'd argue a different point: The root problem is, as it's been for decades, lack of balance between big-market and small-market clubs. Baltimore's great success this year and the perennial success of the Rays aside, small-market franchises are just too badly handicapped, and most of these clubs are in the Midwest and Mountains. Without an NFL-style system of salary caps, the teams with a guaranteed fat revenue stream will dominate, unless management is so bad they find a way to lose, like the Mets. The league office and the Player's Association would have to allow salary caps to happen.

    • @nickgilstad9276
      @nickgilstad9276 Рік тому +4

This is the take I subscribe to as well. Realistically the game will never be balanced so long as teams have the "option" to play by a salary cap rule. I'm a Twins fan myself, and I'll fully admit that this year's team realistically is one of the weakest of the AL playoff teams even if they won the division, but it's definitely a hard to agree with Yankees fans complaining about the system as if their team didn't also beat up on garbage teams for decades from the 80's to the late 2000's.
I agree the playoff system could use a revamp, but unless divisions get a complete overhaul either they mean something or they don't. An argument against this video could even be how about the top team from each conference plays the WS like it was for YEARS.

I disagree with your take on the Twins. If you win the division - no matter the strength of it, you deserve the advantage vs the team that didn't win theirs.
Second, the old format was balanced and better. Three division winners and a wildcard. Teams that didn't make the cut under the old rules shouldn't be given a glorified participation trophy, that amounts to a chance to win a freaking CHAMPIONSHIP! It defeats the whole point of a 162 game season. It's a ridiculous decision IMO. I'm not even going to get into fairness.
One day it'll backfire. Watch a team that nobody cares about only win 77 games catch fire at the right time under the current format and fluke their way to a title, and viewership drop like a rock.
Hell, the Dbacks only won 84 and could pull it off.

The format is a problem in the NFL as well. Because you have teams that have a lower record that end up higher seeds all the time. *HOWEVER* That's why they say that the easiest way to the playoffs is winning your division. That's the goal of every major sports team; win your division, don't settle for a Wild Card spot. Stating that the Twins are frauds in this video is completely unnecessary, especially after the ASB. Throughout all 162 games, like you state, the Twins have had one of the best, if not the best, starting rotations in the Majors. The bats finally came alive after the ASB, especially after they finally stopped trying to shove Buxton in the line up because, "superstar"... Yankees are out, deal with it. Stating that the Twins don't deserve to be in the playoffs based solely on their record, or be the lowest possible seed, is bullshit, and you know it.

Wild cards and byes guarantee some teams just won't have their ace until late in a series if at all, and completely throws the rotation out of wack.
The whole point and appeal of the playoffs is watching the best vs the best. Obviously this isnt always gonna be the case with injuries but ace vs ace matchups are so cool

Sorry sir for your plight - and for your reason to make this video.
To say the playoffs are "rigged" has no foundation other than in saying you are not happy with the numbers - because to be rigged means everyone in charge knew and deliberately set it up long ago that it was going to end with the Twins not having a better record than some/all wild card teams and they made these rules knowing some would get the short end of the stick.
You are right that the East teams are better than the Central teams based on numbers most years.
I also think you are right that they should arrange the bracket so that it is based on records - (but I also think the Wild Card teams need to go, period, and with possible expansion of one more team in each league, I like the proposal of two 8-team divisions, but with only having division champs in the "tournament."
And yet, I see problems with some your claims, based on accounting only for some and not all factors. (And yes, I am a Twins fan).
    1) You basically complain by belittling the AL Central and without any foundation but "your" cherry-picked numbers - as though all things are equal in payroll, resources, etc. (And if we are going to reduce this issue to simple numbers, thank you for telling me you are a Yankee fan; you told me everything by that declaration).
    2) I encourage you to watch an excellent video that is linked below as a rebuttal to your claim at 2:20 on the Twins not being able to compete - as the Twins had chances to win several of the now 18 straight playoff losses - and did not lose simply by being inferior (as at times it was by freakish plays and, yes, in at least one case, your beloved Pinstripes did benefit from an umpire error):
    ua-cam.com/video/qWm_6l5m8uc/v-deo.htmlsi=Uu-DrBFzRzO93Lx5
    3) Not all AL East teams will finish above .500 - (Thanks Red Sox).
    4) The Twins played well against almost everyone in the AL this year except TB and DET. They did end 2-4 against BAL, but could have easily split 3-3; They were 6-7 against CLE, 3-4 against BOS, and 3-4 against Seattle. Everyone else in the AL they either split or won the the season series (4-3 over the NYY), including an impressive 5-2 against TEX and 4-2 against HOU.
If the Twins can't win it all, I hope the O's do - and that they will bury BOS and NYY for years to come!!!!
    Thank you for your time......

Stf this is the reason why baseball playoffs are so exciting and fun to watch because any team can win it. In the NBA one of the top 3 teams in the whole league wins the championship every year because of the seeding system they have and its very predictable and boring. The 2006 Cardinals won the WS as a 82 win team and their division was dogshit the whole year too. On top of that, back then that was like a 6 team division too.
