- HI all,
in this video I take the pajero out to test the various super select modes to show you the difference in how they work and to offer some tips in their usage.
I also cover off some local track info useful for those new to 4 wheeling or new to the mitsubishi pajero.

I like how you take the time to explain and drop hints, tips and cautions for us newbies. Particularly liked the super select explanation!
Thanks Ian. Appreciate it
Also want to thank you for this. Very helpful!
Most welcome
Great vid , thanks for this insight, my old Pajero wasn’t as flash with a sports gear box, nice to see it working like that
No problem 👍
A couple of things that come to mind.
With the electronic system in the Mitsi. or any of them make sure that you go into each mode one at a time, make sure it engages and then go to the next one or they can get a bit cranky.
Another thing with autos when you are using the handbrake on a hill make sure that you are hanging the weight of the vehicle on the handbrake and not the transmission.
Just banging it into park and then pulling the handbrake on will mean it may be held by the transmission before the brake has a chance to engage.
From what I have heard it can cause expensive damage to transmissions over time.
thanks for the input OB. good point about letting it get into the new mode before moving it to the next one. Mine gets used fairly regularly and I think this helps it, its rare mine gets hung up between modes but it happens every now and then. a little back and forth usually sorts it.
Just went to Pinfest today, on way home detoured on a side track just to check out, first time off-road and was looking for something easy to go though the gear settings to get familiar. Didn't know I was on this track until I saw the larger steps, didn't have a go as first time out and was just me. I did watch this video the other week as wasn't sure on the 4WD system of the Pajero. What a coincidence I found the same track.
I'm from Sydney so not familiar with the area.
Great video.
That was a great video mate, thanks for that. Bought a Pajero Sport so have a better understanding the the 4WD select options now.
Hey donks. No worries mate. How you enjoy it. Get into the pajero vic forum. Heaps of info on there
Thanks for the tip on the track, mate. I'm moving to Belmont with my NX Paj in 4 weeks time. I've only had the paj for about 2 years, stock as a rock apart from tires. Will definitely check this track out when I get there and I'm planning to get more into 4wding in the new year once I've got more time!
Excellent Christian. I wasn't sure it would benefit anyone, not knowing if anyone was in the area. thanks for letting me know . its a nice drive up there too. taking your time its probably about 30 minutes or so . there's a couple of little camp sites up there too, but I can't give away all my secret spots.
Camping is relegated to powered sites in the Jayco. The wife and 2 little girls are more into glamping. Next time you're up there, if you see a dark grey NX stuck in the mud it'll be me haha.
you can change from 2H to 4H up to 100km/h, not 80.
things that were not mentioned but are quite important :
when changing to 4HLC and 4LLc the gearbox must be in neutral position.
(that info is also present in the manual and small screenvisor card)
yeah the 80-100 thing changed over the years, they certainly refer to 100km with relation to the newer units.
I don't think I need to be going that quick when making the change though. Typically I wont do it over about 40 given the chance.
And yes to the old pajero shuffle. You know when you're out with other pajeros and either getting on or off the track when everyone pulls up to stick it in neutral to put it into or out of 4wd :)
Awesome video mate. Thanks for your upload. Great explanation of the Paj system.
No Worries Ed, Most welcome
Great video mate. I am waiting for my traction control mod at the moment. Keep up the good work mate
definitely worth doing Ken. When I stick all the gadgets on, there's nothing it hasn't made it up yet. That said, I drive it NOT to break it.
Where do you get the mod from??
Great stuff Mate, it really shows what you can actually do with standard 4wd if you got bit of knowledge,
instablaster...
your fan from egypt , thanks for the great trip
Thanks Hazem. How's those pyramids going ? :) and G'day from Australia
Cool video😎
I have a gen 4 pajero diesel as well.
I love how my car makes me feel like I'm protected when I drive it.
It is a big, strong and good looking vehicle👍️
Got that right mate 😁
Great video... and very good friend you have in your trip !!!!
Thanks Alberto. he comes with me everywhere :)
This was helpful, thanks man!!
welcome bro
From the video, it looks like you're lifting off the accelerator too early. This doesn't give the traction control enough time to intervene. To make traction control work, you need to keep the throttle applied.
That's exactly what I do. I try to apply the minimal amount of effort to get through an obstacle , especially when 'testing' or trying to show it working. Tc definitely requires more acceleration to be applied to get it to operate effectively. The challenge here is, too much right foot can see the free wheel spin up fast and when it comes down to meet the ground the sudden stop can cause breakages, usually a cv joint. So it's a fine line between too little and too much throttle. I like to work up to it for the benefit of the pajero and the track. The tc on the paj though is some of the best I've ever seen. It's bloody awesome
I have been out there with my Gen 3 Pajero i have Gen 4 now but have not taking it off-road yet, I'm at Marks Point 2280
Thanks for making a great video. Explaining the different modes. 4wL didn't look very impressive and I don't have a rear locker. Need to add it to my list of things to save for
Pajero king of cross country
indeed
Awesome vid. Thanks for taking me out on a virtual bush bash 😎
Good clip mate, thanks for the card. Cheers Steve
thanks for the comic relief :) nearly did it myself
Awesome video
thanks Vic
Good video thankyou
cheers
What a good dog
Great video and just what I needed since just replacing my old and tired NL manual with a new NX. Would love to see a similar vid on soft sand.
my pass runs out in Nov so I hope to do it before then :)
Another great video mate, great stuff ....
put that poor bloody dog in a seat belt though - you have a prang and he’ll fly trough the windscreen. If you love him, keep him safe 👍 good video either way, cheers
thanks Grant. discussing my options for that one. i have a harness and seat belt clip thing for him but frankly whilst it may keep a copper happy, it doesnt make him any safer. im on the look out though and taking suggestions
Great video. Best explanation of the Super Select. I have a 2012 platinum which doesn't have a rear diff lock. So far not needed it as I drive mostly on the beach and gravel. What would you recommend as an after market rear diff lock?
Hey Harry, thanks mate. no recommendations from me re after market lockers. Not had any experience with them, so can't help i'm afraid. The traction control on the pajero is excellent though and there's not many situations where you can't get through with that.
@@DENMONKEY hey mate when did they introduce the tc was it in the nm?
My NM's SS2 is sick for this couple of month... Currently still on the 4x4 hospital.
Hope it doesnt cost too much
Ahahaha, sliding sideways backwards off an incline is nearly always where I start feeling the poo starting to come out 🤣🤣🤣
sliding it very much just being along for the ride and it doesnt take much to go wrong. it was pretty harmless here though, so i was happy to just hold on :)
Great vid, thanks for the comparison! Can you discuss the effect of stability control vs traction control in your next vid? I see lot of confusion in the groups and on the forums on the difference between the two and how stability cuts power when off road vs traction braking the spinning wheel to deliver power where it's needed.
I would also love to hear your thoughts on the throttle controller you have!
i can do that but you pretty much nailed it. ASC cuts power to the engine and TC breaks the specific wheel that is slipping. I do find when ASC kicks in TC does it's thing too. so they work at the same time but when your straight and doing some 4wd, TC does its thing on its own
I'm yet to have ASC kick it going straight but have had it do its thing around corners.
Its best to turn ASC off when on sand or on slippery tracks, ASC is different to TC.
TC works by applying the brakes to the wheels that has no traction which in the end transfer the power to the wheels that as traction when you cross over.
ASC is design to keep you on the road, when grip cannot be maintained at each tyre while driving on slippery road surfaces or due to sudden steering wheel input, braking force is applied at one or more wheels and engine output is automatically adjusted to help the driver maintain control, which makes ASC a momentum killer when off-roading, especially in the sand. When I first brought my Pajero I was having so much trouble driving in the sand I was thinking at the time there was something wrong with the vehicle. So I jump on the net and found out that ASC was the problem when I was driving in the sand and boy did it make a different when I disabled it.
DENMONKEY I was surprised you didn’t have ASC disabled when you were in 4H center diff locked.
Hi. I drive a pajero, 2020 model. My keyless stopped working after a month of contact use. The alarm light isn't on. Tried these steps. Nothing
Hello, great video. Congrats! I did TC OFF mod few years ago. Very easy. Now I want to do also TC ON mod - when RD is locked. Do you have some electrical drawings for it? Thanks
can't say I do mate, but if you hit up Vlad on the vic pajero forum, where I got mine from, he might be able to help or you can buy the mod. either way, he's the guy
Nice vid mate, good to see you are getting famous in your neck of the woods. At the beginning you said you lowered pressures to 30psi, maybe lowered to 18-20psi for rock steps would have made the difference?
Sorry, that was normally only down to 30 or so..usually 28 ish for just running on dirty type roads that don't require any real 4wheeling. just purely for the comfort factor.
On this one I only went down to 25. this allows me to reduce my pressures but not low enough that I can't just run to the local servo to top up without the need to air up on the trail. would lower had made a difference here? maybe but i think it would have been marginal. If it was dry I'd say yes, but because the rocks were slippery and there was a clay base there too, I don't think the impact would have been much at all. That said, If I was stuck there, it would be the first thing I would have done.
@@DENMONKEY no worries mate :)
Great vid mate. We’ll have to go for a spin together!
yes, yes we will. the old girl is going into mitsi tomorrow. think i may have a timing chain issue. we shall see. already robbing me
@@DENMONKEY There was at timing chain tensioner recall a while back.
Let them know if they want to charge you.
Great vid as usual. I have an NX 2016 virgin so good to see the tricks of the track. What tyres do you run, pls?
Hi Nigel, welcome to the club mate. Dyna pro AT I think they're 275/65/18s
Thanks for the video. Always look forward to catching them as you release them. I’m in the process of looking at Suspension for the NX. What are you running and did you do the install yourself?
Thanks Dave, Bilstein shocks and Lovell springs 2 inch lift in the HD. They didn't have the extra HD when I did it, but I would have done that if they did. Just with all the extra weight I have on now. I got mine from BushSkinz in NSW as a kit but had it fitted by the local guys for around 300. All been good so far.
DENMONKEY cheers 🍻
Your screen is massive. Is that still the Chinese brand you got a couple of years ago?
Yes mate sure is
@@DENMONKEY so it's going well then? I need to get a new head unit and when seeing that yours is still running I figured I will check em out again. Weird name. Idoit or something?

I need help I have got a 2006 Mitsubishi Pajero it's an automatic and four-wheel drive if I put it in drive and then put the four-wheel driving will it wreck the gearbox and if I put it in Park and put it in four-wheel drive will it wreck the gearbox I don't know much about those vehicles please help
I think, when the car is not moving, shift from 2H to 4H, should be done in Neutral.
2h to 4h can be done up to around 80km anything else requires stopped in neutral. Didn't hurt so it for everything though I guess. Just not required.
@@DENMONKEY Great Vid man. One note though...from 4h to 4hlc can still be done while driving (up to 100km). Only going to and out of 4llc car needs to be stationary and in N.
Either way, great videos!
Just bought an NW last week. Ordered Vlads loom the same day. I live in Newcastle. Thanks for the vid. What double din stereo do you have, the screen on my factory one is not working. Cheers
Hey James, this should answer your question nicely :) ua-cam.com/video/wETbObKQ6HA/v-deo.html

G'day from Australia. the head unit I now have installed is an doing android unit. You can see it here ua-cam.com/video/wETbObKQ6HA/v-deo.html. Hope that helps
Mate I love your video, you have done a great job 👍 the only thing I can't get the name of place 🤓🤓 I keep repeating the video but still can't get the name of MOUNT ? So if you don't mind please write it down S.V.P thanks mate
No worries mate. It's called Mount Sugar Loaf .
@@DENMONKEY thank you you 🙏🙏
Great video, one quick question. I have a 2012 3dr pajero and when I go into low range the asc off light never comes on. When I get stuck or when one wheel looses traction, the ts doesn't seem to stop the wheel that's spinning in 4h. Any suggestions? Maybe a fuse?
In 4h with the center unlocked, that's an on road awd setting basically so in an off road situation the tc wouldn't work effectively. If you switch it to 4h locked the traction control mapping changes because the center is now locked which means that the vehicle knows it's off road so it will work differently. Idk if this was what you were asking?
Another excellent video. Do you have any details on where to get that traction control mod from please?
cheers David, here the link to the post on the pajero forum www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=54470&highlight=traction+control VLad over there makes them. You can get in touch with him through there.
@@DENMONKEY many thanks. Cheers.
How do you like the throttle controller? Getting into an NP Pajero soon for some touring in Canada/ USA and wondering if it's worth the spend.
awesome. I have a cheaper chinese one and it was rubbish, made the car shudder at low speeds etc. but the new one with the lock up kit is awesome. definitely worth getting for like a 100 odd bucks
Is this track still open?
is it possible to use the rear diff lock in 2h? So you'll get 100% of the engine's power, because (or tell me if i m wrong) with central diff lock you split the power 50/50 with front and rear wheels
No mate, wont work. it will only allow you to turn on the locker in 4L under about 20 or 30km/h. go faster or change to 4h and it turns itself off
Hey from Newcastle! I just got a pajero and am keen to take it out soon but am a complete newbie. Would you recommend bash plates for these tracks?
Hey GUADB welcome aboard. depends where you want to go. I'd say if you're a complete noob then probably not for a little while because even just taking a run along the fire trails will feel like you're 4wding and you will get a kick from it. Once you start heading off the beaten track , then I'd say start looking at them. You don't need the full set either, just the front couple would be enough to cover your important bits. I just went a bit over board and did it for the channel :)
@@DENMONKEY cheers mate! Might see you out there one day

4x4's don't get stuck. It's just some people driving them do.
Muddy tracks are so unpredictable. Fortunately it's mostly deep snow in the winter and fast rivers to ford in the summer up here.
Enjoying watching ☺️
Hi is this the cronos4x4 traction mod or another one? Thanks for the vids
Hey Ian, Not heard of a Cronos one before. this one is made by a fella called vlad and he's a member of the local pajero forum. you can see his post on the forum here and it will have his contact info in it
www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=54470&highlight=traction+control
you can also see the install video here ua-cam.com/video/zXlFNWWZFxE/v-deo.html
@@DENMONKEY thanks heaps. I got in touch with vlad and waiting on the next batch.
The cronos4x4 one is a complete copy cat version.
Can Pajero do cruise control off road? What is the slowest speed possible?
I think the low limit is 40kmh
Hey mate, I’ve got a 2008 ns. I go put it into 4h and it still doesn’t stop flashing, I can hear it engaging but the light will constantly flash not stay green like yours. Any idea?
does it sort itself when you go into 4L or the same ? Its likely the solenoid at the front . they are vacuum driven and the hoses can break down and cause issues. to check those out first. have a squizz on the vic pajero forum. search vacuum solenoid and you should see what I mean
Great vid thanks a mil! Can you tell me which Pajero's came out with diff lock circa 2008 ish also do you have any links or info on doing the tc mod? Looking forward to your reply. Cheers Steve.
Hi Steve, here's a video of the install of the tc mod from Vlad. Is that the one you mean ? Re the diff lock mate, that one is a bloody rabbit hole. It seems Mitsubishi had the RDL as factory in some models but not others, then removed it, then put it back in and it was only offered as an option with vehicles without sun roofs or something stupid like that. Basically, there's no obvious list to follow. You just need to look at the specific car to find out. :)
Took me months to figure out how the friggen TC worked 😂
I couldn't tell from the video but does yours make a noise when the TC is operating? Mine makes a sort of soft whirring or clicking noise when the wheel lights on the dash flash for wheel spin. It's not cv noise, sounds like it's coming from under the dash maybe?
All Aussie Traveller yeah, mine does that too. Interested to hear the answer.
@@DamienM63 if yours does it too maybe it's normal? For reference mines a stock spec NT, GL model.
Hey AAT, yes mate it sure does. It makes a rapid clicking noise and sounds like its behind the dash. Sounds like a relay clicking or the like. That's normal. If you push the TC too hard, on a climb, it will start beeping at you because it needs a break. This actually happens pretty quickly if you're really making it work hard.
@@DENMONKEY yep, I've had it beeping more than a few times 😂
Lots of steep, loose and scrabbly hills around the Pilbara.
Thanks for the info mate.
By the way, I've booked in to get a rear Eaton E-locker in a couple of weeks. I'll report back when I've had a chance to test it out.
Defo let me know how it goes and what you think
Have you tried vlads mod, llc, no rear diff lock. ?
this version of his mod allows me to turn off the TC as well.
hello where did you buy a big antenna that is installed with the spare tire
It's a tarheel 200 antenna. They are a US based antenna maker
Question. What is 4 H without locking the centre differential for?
Wet roads or light gravel roads.
@@DENMONKEY Thanks
4H is All Wheel Drive - you can use it for daily driving on sealed roads.
Is your rear differential lock 🔐 on stock or after market?
Stock
My pajero 3.8 is not equipped with the diff lock, but I am disabling Traction control by disconnecting the fuse inside the machine cover.
Hey Fahad, Yes mate , I have heard of other guys doing that for sand driving.
How much is a rear diff lock setup worth
my rear diff is factory fitted p
Hello, need advice here. Want to buy aftermarket wheels for my pajero with fatter tyres. I have 18” standard on my ns and want to get 17” with 8.5-9” wide. And fit it with fatter tyres, and planning to buy 5 one for the spare, will it fit on the location of the spare with the cover closed? Thanks
Great video too i am surprised how quiet ur car is in the cabin, mine is noisy can hear the engine noise
ooh sorry mate. no idea. I beleive others have gone 33s wihtout too much issue with the rear wheel carrier but I don't know the specifics. You can also mod/cut the carrier for larger wheels and get a lift kit for the spare. its basically just a plate of steel with new bolt holes in it and raised the rear spare up around 30-50mm or something like that. check out the pajero forum, plenty of info on there.
i think they made improvements for noise via the firewall with each model. a friend has an NX and its quiet as
265 (standard width) are plenty wide enough for most things. 285 or wider will need the rear tyre mount adjusted plus a change in offset or will scrub when nearing full lock. I found a set of Pajero 17" rims and run Toyo Open Country MTs at 265/70/17 as a second bush set. No mods required no scrubbing even on full flex or lock. Super chunky tread which measure in close to 32".
@@expandedconscious8265 i bought aftermarket wheels 17” in size and decided to keep the width and go 1 size bigger which you have but with a/t tyres and no issues at all just need to buy wheels studs that fit. Also bought the spare wheel lift plate beforehand but didn’t have to use it maybe in the future for clearance for towing purposes
Is rear diff lockers standard on the Pag?
in some models yes, in others no. It seems to have changed from year to year and model to model.
Where's the dog seatbelt? $400 fine in NSW. Good video tho.👍
good point. he does have one. where it is right now though, no idea. I need a better one for him. open to suggestions if you have any for a good one.
DENMONKEY seat belts useless if the dog refuses to use it. 😉🍺
A little bit of momentum on the first 2WD you would have gotten up.
Go the Pajero :)
but then I would have had nothing to test :) I likely could have done a lot of it in the lesser modes with more right foot or a change of line but it was more about the pajero than my techniques
@@DENMONKEY Fair call :)
Never been stuck in my Pajero in 8 yrs...Yet haha
me either unless I've tried to...sand and it was to test recovery gear. I and others are always very impressed with the pajero. I think its underrated very much. still, I could use a little more flex
DENMONKEY more flex and maybe a bit better reduction in the transfer case for 4L. That aside an underrated vehicle. Pity Mits haven’t further developed and will be stopping production in the 1st half of 2021.
Cheers...
@@4bnewb969 yup, put be down for both of those , it is a bit high in 4L.
What diff lock do you have??
Just the standard factory rear one
Need to be in Neutral before engaging 4WD low range.
Yes

let some air out of your tyres (down to 10 to 15psi) and traction will improve 100%
18 inch rims
it would do but that section I recorded isn't the only part of the track I needed to cover and the 25psi was a happy medium for the day. There were other options for making the climb but I wanted to leave the work to the traction modes for the examples.
yes mate. I'd prefer 17s and bigger rubber but maybe later.
traction control is more intense in 2H and 4H because the stability and traction has authority over the throttle... 4HLC and 4LLC disables this and the system relies solely on braking authority.
In 2h and 4h the TCL/ASC intervention is strong enough to sometimes bring the car to a complete stop.
Oh I've definitely had run ins with the ASC and sometimes at speed. I think lifting the car has an impact on how it performs. well it certainly has in mine. Not terrible but it flashes up when it wouldn't normally in a stock vehicle.
@@DENMONKEY it has 2 states
Advisory - alert driver that ASC has detected the car center of gravity or traction conditions aren't ideal...
Basic a flash of the ASC light...
And Intervention mode - the driver has encountered a situation that they cant resolve so it takes in a count COG, speed and direction of travel and works out a solution that will see the car follow the drivers commands and/or not roll over.
