  • We're back with another news round up, and what a bunch of news we had.
1 year after committing to UP, Jared Bahay changes his mind and decides to stay home with the Ateneo Blue Eagles. In other trending topics, Rey Remogat is said to be heading to Diliman and KQ is being recruited by both the UAE and the Knicks?! Let's talk about it in this podcast.

As always, great topics, great discussion. Expected nothing less from the best UAAP-centric podcast in the country right now.
    Personal thoughts:
    - Aside from La Salle winning it all last year despite not having the best FSA, let's not forget the Chibuize Ikeh Ateneo team that beat a La Salle team that had arguably the greatest FSA in UAAP history in Ben Mbala. And unlike La Salle this year, that Ateneo team did not have the best local player as well (Thirdy, Matt, Isaac and the rest of the gang were still just coming into their own). That championship was all about coach Tab and his coaching, which brings me to my next point...
    - All these transfers, piracy, poaching issues are happening because the only way to overcome coaching brilliance is to stockpile and hoard as much talent as you can. UP, specifically for the last few seasons, has never been known to develop talent. They've been winning because they've either recruited the best HS talent available (Tamayo, Abadiano, Alarcon, Lopez, Pablo, Gagate) or have taken (or sige na nga, "accepted") UAAP-proven players from other schools (Felicilda, Torres, Cansino, Rivero, Stevens). They've never had a Anton Asistio, BJ Andrade, Gian Mamuyac type who were buried in the bench at the start of their UAAP careers and were slowly developed to become major rotation players by their last year. This is Bo Perasol's trademark, even when he was with Ateneo (recruited Tolentino, Cani, Pinggoy, Doliguez, poached CJ Perez). Well, he's gotten one championship out of it so you can't really crucify the guy for taking that route. But make no mistake about it, this is happening because this is the best way to beat a Tab Baldwin-coached team.
-Season 87 will be very interesting in terms of the talent pool for the point guard position across the league. If Remogat transfers, the UAAP won't be bringing back arguably the 4 best point guards of the previous season in Nelle, Gonzales, Baclaan, and Remogat. This is not even to mention guys like Lastimosa, Brown, and Nonoy who likewise will not be back next season. That will leave us with the UP guys (Cagulangan, Felicilda, Abadiano etc), the comebacking Padrigao, and Steve Nash Enriquez as the only proven point guards for next season. Obviously we will expect some guys to break out (Jumamoy), some to maybe transition to more of a lead guard role (Montebon) and true freshman point guards who most likely will make an immediate impact (Bahay, Pasaol). Let's start to dub season 87 as the Changing of the Guard for the UAAP
    - I agree, KQ needs to go pro now. He is the best collegiate prospect I've seen since Kiefer Ravena and La Salle would be doing the kid a disservice by forcing him to play 1 or 2 more years. They've done a helluva job developing this kid, and KQ has already rewarded them by giving them a championship. I would take KQ today over 95% of the PBA players if I was a PBA owner and about to start a franchise from scratch. He's that good, and spending another college season when all the opportunities are presenting themselves right now is frankly a waste of time. And while we're at it, La Salle, I've gained so much respect and admiration for your basketball program this past season for the way and manner you won the chip. Let's not go and and try to be UP 2.0 and start "recruiting" star pkayers from other schools just to keep up. Cortez AND Baclaan? Really?
Looking forward to the next, guys! You are awesome!

The game-changer for admu in the 2017 title was jeron teng graduating from dlsu. Tab knew rivero couldn't carry their team yet, and even at the time, thirdy was already the better player compared to ricci. Hence admu upsetting mbala-led dlsu for the diadem
Re recruits, it's the pangilinan way as well for admu, since talking over the program in late '90s. It's basically how his era ('60s admu) did it, with their plethora of recruits at the time. And as halfbreed, he's no purist. Hence non-atenean coaches starting from joe lipa (to the chagrin of purist 'homegrown' atenistas lol). And recruits like tenorio, alvarez, black's 5peat teams etc. Under tab, the marquee recruits have been coming from overseas

Just a rejoinder bro, here's another way of looking at it: the best way for admu to remain dominant is to get foreign recruits, starting with its coach (di naman siguro mura pagkuha kay tab at sa programa/recruits nito). Basically, kanya-kanya diskarte: admu is doing it via overseas; local naman sa up (perhaps mas cost-effective lol)

The Remogat and Baclaan cases are unusual but the UPMBT of recent history is known for stacking their roster with former players of other UAAP schools at the senior level. Cansino from UST, Ricci Rivero from La Salle. Remogat is not the first, and he won't be the last. I think it's mainly because that's how Coach Bo operates. It was under his term where Cani, Pingoy, Tolentino and others were recruited into the Ateneo program straight from high school. They're doing the same thing, stacking up the roster with stars from UAAP schools not just coming from the Juniors, but also stars they've went up against at the Seniors level.

    • @fredtacang3624

It's typical UP academically as well. As the national university, and UPIS just a 'small school' compared to up system as a whole, majority of up students themselves came from diff HS's
Also, recruitment has been there for admu long before bo. Right from the time halfbreed pangilinan funded the team. With non-atenean coaches like joe lipa and his game-changing recruits like tenorio/alvarez, to NB's 5peat teams (buenafe, rabeh, salva, slaughter, baclao etc). Under tab, the top recruits have been from overseas like him as well

@@fredtacang3624 UPIS just isn't an option for many of these recruits straight from high school. Also understandably, the University of the Philippines, being the national university, has to follow the mandate it was given. Sure, majority of the UP students themselves come from different high schools but I doubt the blue chip recruits of UP actually passed the UPCAT. I wonder if the transferees from other UAAP schools actually meet the transfer requirements considering there are standards to transfer into UP Diliman and its various programs.
Ateneo in the past decades has invested great effort to recruit the best, much like La Salle, but they also try to make their recruits fit in the system these coaches have built through the years. What I find problematic is that, evidently seen during the Bo Perasol era, Ateneo ended up recruiting the best blue chip recruits during that time without any clear plan for them to fit in the system. That period in Ateneo basketball history even made me doubt if they had a system in the first place!
It's noticeable that the same strategy is being employed in UP right now, to recruit the best of the best and within that pool of talent, they wanna figure out rotations that actually sustain the quality of game they play. The only problem is that, considering they have a weak Juniors development program, they're forced to be more aggressive in recruiting players for their seniors program.
Regretfully, because they stack their roster, not everyone gets the opportunity to start. It hurts the players because these are really talented recruits who would benefit more if they started or got more minutes than what they give them. Unlike Ateneo where they actually develop players, and prioritize giving playing time to seniors while providing exposure to great rookie talents.

Not just bec of mandate, but UP being arguably the country's top school overall, it attracts the most attention from applicants, academically as well. And it's a multiple intelligences university, recognizing the many diverse talents. Hence there are diff ways of entering up as well, not just upcat. There are talent tests for the diff art forms (visual, music etc), and vaas system for athletes. Even a less diverse school like admu has several acet test schedules, not just the original once a year, to cater to their own recruits (some aided by tutors), according to insiders themselves
Now, up is translating such academic character ('top school') to sports, esp the flagship basketball program. Similar to how pangilinan did it 2 decades earlier in admu. As arguably the country's top private school, it can't even get its basketball program off the ground. Til pangilinan and his recruitment spree, now on its 3rd decade
Re system, each school can craft its own system, whatever works for them. Like pangilinan pioneering FSA 's in san beda (sam ekwe), or recruiting expensive foreigners/non-homegrown coaches etc for admu

Welcome back, Sam, Gab, & Maui! I was hoping to hear from you.
These are my thoughts to your webcast:
    1) Jared Bahay - Most probable first game in the UAAP will be versus UP
    2) Rey Remogat - Prefer that UP goes after Kiefer Alas or Andy Gemao (if he can’t make it to a US NCAA Division 1 program). I believe both of them have more upside than Bahay.
    3) UP Recruitment - Gold is employing the same strategy he implemented wherein he went after the best talent possible. Given that UP did not win last season, you mentioned that this is not working. But remember they played against the best college player (and maybe one of the best of all time), Let us wait after five years for the final results.
    4) Parity - In the eight seasons between 73 and 80, two teams, UP and UE, were never able to qualify for the Final Four. In the previous five seasons, only UST was not able to qualify. In those eight seasons, Ateneo, FEU, and DLSU were the most successful whilst in the last five seasons, it has been Ateneo and UP. I don’t think there has ever been parity in the UAAP. A college program has always been dominant for a lengthy period of time; most recently, Ateneo. And now UP is upsetting the status quo with its aggressive recruitment.
    5) Kevin Quiambao - I agree with Gab that KQ is playing at the position he is best for; which is small forward (or 3 or wing). If he remains with DLSU, they should ensure he plays that role majority of the time.

Aside from JD having one more year, I guess Bahay saw how Gold played JD and Janjan in S86, especially during the finals series - him being willing to bench his best PG (arguably) for someone else in crucial stretches was telling of how the Bullpups connection runs very deep, to a fault.

Is admu saying inferior regular students nila kaya mas mababa QPI requirements compared to athletes? Also, ba't mas pinapahirapan nila student-athletes nila. Doable ang pagiging student (regular QPI) pero mas mahirap maging athlete (higher QPI). Doesn't make sense, considering it's already more challenging to be a student-athlete, plus they do more for the school pa in terms of mileage etc

Finally, Ateneo has a PG in the future! Excited to see him play along with his former Magis Eagles teammates (Celis and Asoro) and Batang Gilas teammates (Amos, Demisana, Gamber, and possibly Porter). UPMBT reminds me of Franz Pumaren's La Salle were kukunin na lahat tas majority mabubulok sa Team B haha, kaya Rey must stay at Recto, and for Coach Bo, Pang Gilas ang recruitment style nya so maybe dun na muna sya sa Gilas Youth, IMO. In the event that Remogat does move to UP I think its not farfetched to expect that their coach will adjust the gameplan to maximize his talents. No offense to Janjan but if I were the coach I'm giving Remogat 25 mins minimum as the team's main point guard.
Also, the funny thing about depth is that it does backfire sometimes because the team can't maximize the individual talents of the players. And depth can also be misleading especially if the talent difference among players is not that pronounced.
Most of the successful teams I saw in college or pro sports usually have no more than 2 "real" superstars (surefire Bleague. KBL or PBA 1st rounders), 3-4 "solid players" (develop first in the MPBL to PBA route) and 2-3 "role/ 3&D players / glue guys". Hence, since the difference and "drop off" in talent from one player to another is obvious if not glaring its easier for the coach to maximize his players.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that at the end of they day its all about talent, the more talented you are - not only vs your opponents but even vs your teammates - determines not only how long you'll play but how your team will play.
    Peace!

A perfect parallel scenario regarding UP's aggressive way of recruitment is John Calipari which started in Memphis University (if you are a basketball fan, there is no need of further tallying of players here and you should know what I mean). Maybe it is one way of winning a championship, but there are still other ways to do so. As it may look odd for majority, siguro hindi lang sanay ang mga tao na nakikitang nasa top ranks ang UPMBT and for my part, I do not understand the level of hate the school has been getting with these players movement. They are just doing what the other schools are doing since the beginning of time. The additional parameter however nowadays, is the presence of financial compensation which former players were very vocal about.
It hits the integrity of the league, yes and definitely. But let us not pretend na ngayon lang nangyayari ito. Sadly, the sport we love is tainted of other things outside its own parameters.

Mare-realize din ng mga Bata yan lalo na yung mga di nagkakaroon ng significant playing time to develop their skills. (Yes I'm looking at you, Gagate, Pablo, Gonzales, Alter). pagdating ng S87, Lalong masikip yung rotation dahil papasok na sila Stevens, Udodo at iba pang recruits who's been sitting for their residency (not to mention the Rumors that Remogat is about to go to Diliman). It's a good move para kay JHouse to choose Ateneo. Wala na si Brown. Inconsistent si Espinosa. And last year na ni Koon. I don’t think its pathetic. Ateneo and Lasalle historically especially the past 2 decades have gotten the lion share of blue chip recruits. What I believe is necessary is a revisit of benefits players can receive since the Uaap is trending like a Pro league which it is not. Star players (albeit good exposure and opportunity) are unusually transferring and may destroy the parity of teams in the League. I believe players who are not in the right situation have every right to transfer to greener pasture.-Maui

It’s not all about UP. We’ve been critical of Jacob Cortez and Baclaan (potentially transferring to Lasalle) too. We find it very unusual that players who are thriving decide to transfer to another school. Foregoing a year of eligibility with no assurances of playing time and usage. -Maui

Im sure if Remogat went to Ateneo instead, you'll be very jubilant! Though UP is stacked with guards, the others are no way near Remogat's caliber. Why take it against UP to get someone who is a sure shot top notch pg like Remogat. Obvious bias against teams competing with your dearest Alma mater.

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  8 місяців тому +1

Sure we would be jubilant. Similar to how Gab said UP is/would be jubilant and Sammy stating your point that they are no other guards of Remogat’s calibre.
But you’re missing the point, we’re saying that maybe these moves (Remogat and Baclaan) might have an adverse effect on the league’s parity. We’re noting how unusual these transfers are. I would have the same reaction for Ateneo in this type of scenario,I would be happy and Jubilant for Ateneo but critical of the potential effects this might have on the Uaap. -Maui

Hope that Amos does not turn pro early or otherwise, hear regrets from you. Maybe i should expect your reaction already knowing how openly biased you are in your podcasts.

To the guy who said KQ is ready to go pro, I'm really curiuos and I want you to answer this:
      What's your point?
Anyone who is very good could be ready to go pro. We're not stupid, we all know that. Francis Lopez could be ready to go pro. Ange Kouame was probabaly ready to go pro long before his final year in the UAAP. Kiefer Ravena was probably ready to go pro after 2 years in college basketball. For all we know, Jared Bahay could be ready go pro and just scrap this UAAP nonsense. Regardless of what KQ decides to do in the near future, stay or go, people will prove time and time again, and you should know this, IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY.
      What's your point?

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  8 місяців тому +2

Never said it was a waste of time to get a degree. Just believe that players should maximize their prime years by going pro as early as possible similar to how its been around the world. They can go back and get their degree eventually if they want to. It nots just about the money its about opportunity, experiences and your development too as a basketball player. But basketball is a very brutal you can’t control how long your peak and prime years will be. -Maui
