THE NAMESAKE is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage. Even Gogol's name represents the family's journey into the unknown.
i cry my eyes out every time i read the book or watch the movie..as i see my life etched out on my silver screen. im indian-american, born to indian immigrants; a professor dad and a stay-at-home mom who had an arranged marriage; i had an odd non-indian name that my dad came up with, which i changed when i joined college; my dad died alone, away from us, when i was in college- leaving me, my mom and my sister. there are great movies but namesake is special for me because its my life on screen
It is uncanny how your life is similar to Gogol's.
You are right that there are other great movies but this one remains special for me too. Irfaan's character reminds me so much of my dad - he was very much like Ashok Ganguly in appearance and personality. I lost him in 2007. Even without that I would still love this movie for what it is.

I watched this many years ago when it first came out, because I was in the mood for a cultural film, and I absolutely adore Kal Penn. I’ve basically grown up as an adult watching his entire career.
This movie roped me in the entire time and had me BAWLING at some of the sadder parts. Hits on all the right notes and feels! 🍻 😢😩
Cast, script and execution were awesome. 🙌

I was like Gogol, born in the US, growing up white washed being the only colored child in my rural PA school. Only until I visited my motherland and the village where my mom grew up did I feel that connection and understand my rich culture

This movie is without a doubt a masterpiece. Kal Penn's best performance, and even though I've only seen bollywood movies by Irfan Khan, I believe this is also his best performance. Put simply, this movie is and will always remain a masterpiece.

I watched this movie many years ago. The actor (dad) reminded me of my dad so much. There are scenes where I couldn't control my tears. I loved my dad too much to ever go against his directions for me. I guess this is why I am who I am and I love it. I always listened to his voice.

I like this movie, it is a movie that actually talks about immigration in the U.S. without screaming every 3 seconds that the United States is racist and other garbage. Good film. Suggest people watch it.

I'm a "brown person" and I wasn't born here; unlike many Indians on the left-liberal side of the spectrum, I don't distill all my experience and life here to the color of my skin as my only identity that counts. I believe I have received plenty of opportunities to do well for myself and also to make a difference in the life of others. It is a gift to be American. I think too many Indian Americans are falling into identity politics trap. Most "desis" I know of aren't like that, but then again they also got engineering or science or law degrees and not an "asian studies" degree which relies on fomenting identity politics and a grievance culture.
It actually tells about the inner conflicts and pain of being detatched from the roots of the immigrants.

Man this movie is heart wrenching. The book is even more intense. It’s so simple yet complex, just like humans. It opened my eyes because I live in an Indian community in the suburbs (originally from the city where theres many hispanics and blacks). I myself am Caribbean and i find it eye opening to see the pain other cultures go through, especially the one I’m currently surrounded by. The biggest lesson I learned is how empty the search for human approval is. I love the book a lot more but this movie really opened my eyes to how amazing of a character Ashima is.

Yes, I did and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Kal Penn is unexpectedly true and so sensitive in his portrayal of Gogol. You should see it if you haven't yet!

For example: I am currently watching the BBC series "Taboo" and in a matter of two hours per episode, the camera can do what would take a novel hundreds of pages. When it comes to detail and action, dialog, and pacing, a film can be a less efficient method of telling a story. This is because the reader and author/editor are working together in the telling of a story. A movie involves more people, money and so on...
In short, the more details, the more words when a story is told in written form. In a picture, there is no limit to detail either, but it can get it all in a far more compact form.
I had a professor deliver a lecture in school about this subject. He described film as a more concrete medium. In film, as he put it, what the director puts into a work is what the audience will see, meaning the limits are set by the talents of the film cast and crew.
In a book there exists (because of the abstract limitations language) a contract between the imagination of author/editor and the reader. A writer writes a story, with a set number of words and the editor helps the author then craft it into the best draft possible. The book is then published and a reader reads the book and recreates the work in their mind. So, I as a reader can picture different things than you can when reading "The Namsake", and they both are the story of the author, and recreate the book in different ways. The author begins the story, but the reader finishes it.
In film (a more passive experience for the viewer) everything has been done already, and therefore it is more like an act of voyeurism. A good analogy would be a film is like look out or into a window, whereas a book is like not having that window in the first place.
To sum up: film is concrete and books are abstract. Both can tell a story, but both have limits, and virtues.
I think both are great art forms and mediums for telling a story.
Not really. The book is far better. But one has to say the movie adaptation is good and presented the same story differently. It was refreshing.

One of my favorite Indian movies is on Sundance. It's The Namesake starring Kal Penn . Oh how I love this movie but I can't watch now. Thank God for DVR. If you have never watched this movie please do. It is poinet an powerful. It spans all cultures. It's about family, tradition, acceptence, independence and most of all LOVE. #thenamesake

In our class, we are critically reading this book chapter by chapter and it is so amazing. Lahiri is just a fantastic writer. We are almost done the book, can't wait to watch the movie soon and compare the differences while watching.
Watching this movie is surreal. Tabu plays a character who is identical to my mom.

I really relate to the film, I am a mix myself but mostly because I hate my first name with a passion. I have gone by my middle name since I was a kid and want to change it legally.

Just finished reading the book while I had seen the movie long ago. I thought movie did a very good job capturing the character of Ashoke and Ashima. Gogol was captured extensively in the book. Both book and movie were excellent.
