Hurrican Ian Aftermath - First Look at House on Fort Myers Beach

- Hurrican Ian created a storm surge that covered all of Estero Island washing out many homes and buildings in its path. When the island was opened to residents and property owners, we made a trip out to access the condition of the house and begin clean-up and preservation efforts. Ocean water was up at least 7 feet high on the exterior of the house and the entire first floor was a loss. The second floor was a mess with significant ceiling damage and debris. All said the house was still standing and in relatively good condition compared to the majority of structures on the island.
We also had a chance to talk to our friend/neighbor "Jammin Sam" who had a crazy survival story. He was in one of his houses on Fort Myers Beach when the hurricane came through. He was nearly trapped in his house as the water level approached the top of his exterior doors. He was able to get out and had to tie himself to a beam and wait out the storm in the ocean surge.

I live in corpus. Near rockport where Harvey hit. We have an island that’s pretty long as well, where condos and attractions are at. It’s been around five years and it’s still at around 60% rebuilt. It’s a long process.
Great to hear of the progress and it is understandable it will take some time.

Thanks Gary. This house is far better off then many on the island. Many houses are completely gone with just pilings left in their place. It is surreal to see it all in this condition.
