  • The Fischerinsel is part of Berlin´s historic harbour, with historic ships and old buildings alongside new residential constructions from the time of the DDR. Less known nowadays, Berlin has a long history of shipping, being attested officially as a port since the 13th century already.
At the beginning of the century, this part of the city hosted was an industrial area. Some buildings survived the WWII, but most of the constructions nowadays are part of a residential area built during the 1970s. During the 1970s, many state public functionaries were assigned apartments here. One of the most famous residents at the time was Markus Wolf, the Stasi - German intelligence - chief, also called the ´man without a face´ due to the lack of photos of him. However, his former neighbours certified that he was actually very much visible and present in the neighbourhoud. Here is a reference from a book about Fischerinsel at the time - wildwritinglif...
I started my morning stroll from the UBahn station Spittelmarkt, walking slowly on the both rivers. It was shortly before 8, and joggers were doing their morning routine, while some other locals were hurrying to catch the train to work. In just 30 minutes, the place filled slowly with even more people, including tourists looking for some breakfast at the small cafes nearby.
As many other places in Berlin, Fischerinsel is a mixture between old and new, a place of many contrasts, a piece of the puzzle that is Berlin.
