  • 3hr session in Edmonds on Saturday March 6.
    Slingwing v2 4m, Gong Veloce XL 1600cm2, 5’3” 95L Mantafoils
    Conditions:
    * Wind: first half session 12-14kt (in footage), 2nd half 15kt+
    * Waves: 2-3’ wind swell
    * Tide: turned to low during session, hit the bottom on return, scratched my foil. Ai.
    Foil: Veloce XL (1600cm2). This was my 2nd day on my new HA foil, a couple of observations:
    * More twitchy, needs more speed to lift off. Some launches end in drops upon getting into flight.
    * When it gains speed, it generates lots of lift. Needs a ton of front foot pressure, way more that my surf foil (Curve XL 1900cm2).
    * I had to move my back foot forward by about 4”. Foot position is clearly visible in the footage. My usual foot position on surf foil is directly on top of the mast.
    * I didn’t push top speed but average speed is definitely higher. Less drag, more glide, higher stall speed.
    * Mast: 36” aluminum. Didn’t try my new 40” carbon mast since this board has a tuttle not a plate.
    * Doesn’t tank on wing tip breaches like some other foils (footage in earlier FB post).
    Progression focus:
    * Symmetry: jibing around in goofy and regular, about equal time. Switching stances helps wearing out the body more equally. In my case, weak stance (goofy) produces back leg burn, while strong stance (regular) is hard on my low back while riding twisted.
    * Catching waves: HA foil helps. My depowered rides are still short, a few seconds, maybe a dozen pumps max, which may be due to low-energy waves and mediocre pumping efficiency.
    * S-turns. Practiced those as suggested in Wing Surf World issue #03

    Sweet. Nice to see this foiling intro. I am at the stage where I can get on to the foil, but I have no feeling of where it wants to go, so I just crash - I'm guessing too little speed. But cool to how progression really looks, instead of these promo-surfers who make everything look easy and over-and-done-with

      Martin, thanks for your kind comments. The learning curve of wing foiling can be pretty long - it has been, for me (almost a year, so far). Yet, every session yields a small improvement which makes the overall learning curve one huge smile. Have fun in your progression!

    Enjoyed this, thank you! Wind speed? Is that wind chop, size period?
