Tesla Model S Plaid - top speed ACHIEVED!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- The previous attempt didn't go so well to reach the top speed as the traffic was too busy. Now, on my way to the Nürburgring, I had a chance to try again. This time I made sure I drove there early in the morning so there was hardly any traffic. And this time I managed to get the top speed in both track mode and regular driving mode. This is just nuts!

You kept pretty cool on the lap with Misha, many people dont do that.💪
I had good faith in his abilities and really wanted to see what my car can do
@@StevenPeeters Your car overtook every single car in it's way. Absolutey amazing car.... it made M5 Competition looks like a Skoda 1.2 litre 😆😆🥲🥲
it looks like it could have pushed over 350kph no problem. It was still accelerating pretty hard at the top end.
Its limited by software. A canadian team unlocked it and they reached 357km/h
@@greenearth9945 crazy. but this probably wears out the motor pretty quickly
@@SandwichMitGurke that's not how electric motors work...
@@SandwichMitGurke These are AC induction, or AC synchronous motors, aka brushless motors, so only one moving part, besides the single speed reduction gearbox (usually 8.4:1). What makes the rotor move is the constantly rotating magnetic field (which varies with speed)
don't know what the motors are rated for but at those speeds it could rip them apart due to the centrifugal forced. even though the rotors are carbon fiber wrapped, they still have their limits.
The drag coefficient doesn't change with speed. The air resistance / force would indeed quadruple if the speed doubles.
Of course, safety is paramount when trying to do this! But owning this beast, you have to do it once or twice. The biggest takeaway is that just because the car can do it, that doesn't me you can actually do it due to laws, road conditions, weather and other traffic. Easier said that done! Don't try this at home!
Primordial? Haha. Better lookup in a dictionary.
CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER!
Hopefully a PLAID + software update is to come with stock high 8.9 quarter mile times 🙏
328km/h
*still electronically limited, but AWESOME,,
hope to see what's the actual top speed if they rid of the limiter,,, until it hit the real motor's rmp limit,, 😁
someone pushed it 350 km/h with a limiter delete
@@achilles-live yeah,, it did almost 350km/h (216mph) back then,, but still not the limit,, they just running out of space,, (*only 2km)
@@rianrahmanto8069 Yep! Which is still faster than the new limiter, so I wonder how long until someone takes it to a longer road and properly tests it without limiters
BOOM!
I am an enthusiastic Tesla driver myself who likes to enjoy the possibilities on German highways. But based on my experience, I strongly advise against high-speed experiments, even with traffic like on the video: Germans love to drive in the left lane on the autobahn (they probably all think they're fast), and many switch to the left lane without looking in the rearview mirror. It can become dangerous in a fraction of a second! I would only do this if I was practically alone on the road.
Very wise sir
Nice drives Steven. It brings back memories…
I’ll finally receive my own Model S in Brugge in a few days. For me it’s not about speed anymore but fun and safety… It wii be our travel-machine: Airplane, train and coach at the same time, and… with our 2 bikes on the hitch!
Félicitations ! Je pense que c'est la première Plaid a dépassé les 300 sur route publique... une première mondiale 👏
c'était en peu le but 😎
Great Steven! World record. Something completely different: does the new Plaid still have the 1885 cells in the battery like your previous p100d?
Yes, the plaid still has the 18650 cells but in a different configuration and with a much better cooling system. Smaller cells mean better heat dissipation vs the very large 4680.
Great stuff!
Love your profile pic 😁
Cool, man. Keep up!
the 35x or even 36x km/h were with a software hack to switch off all software limitations…
2:48, that looks dangerous. Snake or plastic on the road, at 320kmh😮
Snake? It would become flat.
Plastic, well it will depend... Better not lift the car else you might collide with a nearby airline flight.
you think a plaid+ will happen? I thought they completely scratched it. Probably the roadster will do more
History teaches us that Tesla has Insane mode and released Insane+ afterwards. We had Ludicrous mode and then got Ludicrous+. So yes, given the fact that this is software limited and the latest CoC actually mentions 1276HP (European horsepower), who knows what they still have up their sleeve.
Roadster is still a very big question mark whether they will ever make it. They have zero incentive to do so. And on the other hand they need to beat the Rimac Nevera on every metric without the thrusters to make good on their claim.
@@StevenPeetersOh they'll do Roadster 100%, probably no Plaid plus tho. And if 120k family sedan is beating basically everything on the road, imagine a purpose built 300k sports car from Tesla...
Isn't your tire pressure a bit low? I keep my Model 3 at around 2.9 bar.
Manual says starting at 2.2 bar cold for top speed driving. Temperatures are increasing rapidly at those speeds.
@@StevenPeeters Interesting, didn't know about that!
It hit 328 a bit too hard to just stop accelerating. Could it be they've just raised the limiter to that speed instead of completely getting rid of it?
It does seem to still be electronically limited
Definitely limited at 328. You can see the power output dropping when it only has to maintain that speed. The drop in acceleration is noticeable. As others have said, the car has been seen going up to 350 kmh and running out of space. I'm not sure mechanically it is a good idea to push the car all the way to its drag limited top speed given the speed of motors however.
I think you could see something over 328, but it’s probably limited because the car only has one gear, so, you’re limited to by how fast the motors car spin. The motors are already carbon sleeved to keep the cooling down. If they can get the cooling better figured out, it can go faster, but, who needs to go 203 anyway? That’s not exactly slow.
There is a hack that removes the limiter and gets up to 350-ish. So pure software limit
@@StevenPeeters agreed. But, I think I’m trying to point out that the plaid motors already spin 23,500rpm at 200mph. You’re pushing the limit of the motor coming apart at anything higher. Maybe Tesla tested them to failure and 328 is the limit without running the risk of the motors coming apart at 330 or 340kmh. The last thing you want is for that motor to shell out and fling motor parts at 25,000rpm.
@@g.dubyou6263 Fully agree. That is why I would never install such 3rd party hacks. Plus the fact that you only get the suspension firmware change if you get the official track pack. So, you would be paying a lot of money for that top speed unlock, but still got inadequate suspension for the track
@@StevenPeeters very true and it would be out of warranty. Which they would find a way to blame the hack ruining the battery, if you ever have an issue.
Poor snake at 2:47
Super!
TGV
Tesla is nice but can only maintain 300 for a few mins. before the motors overheat.
An ICE car, like Porsche 911 turbo can hold 300 till the gas tank is empty.
299 is no problem. Only when the numbers turn red it will limit power after a while. A Porsche will overheat too at these speeds when you do that for a long time. But it is impossible to do that for long anyway 😉
No, it cannot hold 300 until the tank is empty. It will overheat. XD
Love it! but that’s not a Tesla S-Plaid
Why not? What car is it then?
Please retrieve the consumption figures too
Not really relevant as you can never drive this fast for long. But it goes down really quickly. And the new graph doesn’t really allow to see the last 10km or something anymore
@@StevenPeeters understanding the impact of speed is always interesting, talking relevance in such a big and fast car is a bit ironic 😉
One could get the stats from other tools like Teslamate etc
@seb. Sorry, but I have a strict policy of no 3rd party tools getting access to my car. #trustissues

@@StevenPeeters ua-cam.com/video/laQyhKuil4I/v-deo.html
Pretty impressive but frankly that should be illegal or the power should be limited, it's just way too powerful for public roads....
At 4:26 (ua-cam.com/video/_rzGb26wBoA/v-deo.html) you are running a speed limit of 120 kph with a speed of ~ 279 kph. That is (subtracting tolerances) ~ 150 kph above the speed limit. If you would have gotten caught that would be 700 EUR in fines plus a 3 month suspension of your driver's license! This is absolutely reckless behaviour and nothing to be proud of.
Booooh... we brake when the panel is visible, and he started braking at 4:24, as soon as the sign was visible.
He was literally braking down to the speed limit when he approached the signs 🤡
well what that has saved in co2. Tesla drivers are such woke and green people ;-)
Did I ever say I bought a Tesla for the environment? Don’t think so. But while we’re at it, it is charged with renewable energy at all times
Totally irresponsible - I hope that German authorities ban you and similar drivers.
If you want to race then go to a race track.
Take your pills kid, and welcome in Germany 🤣
Don't cry, as a German I say that he did nothing wrong. Here, there are no general speed limits, but only an indicative speed of 130 kph.
Wow. Well done. The car is planted and stable at that speed.
The engineers at Engine X built a module that bypasses the software governor and allowed their Model S Plaid to reach speeds of 216 mph. ref: Electrek June 30 2022. Would love to see your car try it again.
Enjoyed watching your lap with Misha!
Hey I’ve charged at that supercharger before:)
328 km/h on the speedometer but what did Draggy measure? What is the top speed according to GPS? Also, 0-300 time?
The 0-300 time is in the video on the draggy printout. If I hadn't lifted off, sub 15s is possible
Thanks for sharing Steven. Good to know that you can hit top speed in any mode. In track mode the suspension is so uncomfortable on the autobahn that my wife wakes up. 😂
haha, you mean the wind noise doesn't wake her up? 😄 I wish they could fix that and make it quiet at speed as well
@@StevenPeeters ,It happened to me recently that I was wondering why the car stopped accelerating only to find out that it hit the limiter at 267 in plaid mode. The absence of wind noise is one of the reasons I now believe that the German engineered cars I used to drive were totally overrated. But maybe I’m just lucky that my Tesla wasn’t made on a Monday? Feel free to reach out if you want to compare.
@@philipfastre7000 I guess we should compare indeed. Above 180 I get a lot of wind noise. That is usually when my wife asks me not to drive that fast
Finally 300 km😀
Much to dangerous on a public road. Drive like that on the Ring but not on the Autobahn.
you should let us know the 0 to 300 km/h GPS speed
It is in the video with dragy results 🧐
@@StevenPeeters I saw but you said you let of the throttle during that run
Awesome! How was the range when driving at speeds of 180-250kmh?
It goes fown quickly above 130km/h. At 200, you’ll havexabout 200-250km left, I think. Of course, you can’t do 200 for that long anywhere, so it is kind of irrelevant.
Best I fid years ago was 20 minutes straight at 200 with the P100D and it was happy to do that all day 😎
@@StevenPeeters Thanks for your reply! That doesn't sound too bad. My model s 90d will maybe have a range of 110-130km at speeds of 200kmh, if it is a warm and sunny day ;-) Driving 20 minutes straight at 200 is a dream!!
@@Sam-wb7uy will see if I can measure it when we go on holiday next week through Germany 😉
@@StevenPeeters Cool, I’m super curious! Enjoy the road trip and your holiday!
@@Sam-wb7uy Model 3 Long Range/Performance can do 200km/h for almost 1 hour on a good day.
You mispelled "Road Drunk".
Hopefull it keeps the vmax for a while. In the past drive units have capped the power after a added amount of time pushing it at high speeds. Hopefully this changed in comparison to older MSP..
The red numbers indicate that it is temporary. But it should be happy doing 299 for a while. Although this is completely irrelevant, because there is nowhere in the world you can keep doing this speed for a longer period
@@StevenPeeters that's not what I meant. Older performance models are capped after a certain amount of time in the red digit area. Drive unitd then are marked exhausted for good. After that the car isn't able to r each 250km/h anymore until you replace the affected drive units. That's hopefully gone no mattee what the rest of the world have on speed limits. Imagine that cap on other cars.
@@dominolehmann8227 ok, never heard of this. And I’ve taken my p100d to the max several times. Any documentation about this?
@@StevenPeeters The part with the counter is only speculation afaik but I'd say it's reasonable cause the speed cap itself is documented by several people in the german Tesla forum who all like to go fast on the Autobahn.
Even if the Plaid has a similar limiter, I doubt it's at the same level as in the P100D and would take people a lot longer to hit. People have a right to get what has been advertised to them but I still think it's kinda funny to complain that your car is only doing 235km/h anymore.

Look at the distance to the cars coming into view over the hill at 2:44
You played Assetto Corsa then chose the name of a lobby called Runner, but added Road, it was you I saw.
No clue what you are talking about. The Roadrunner name is just a reference to the cartoon because it is freaking fast. Meep-meep.
@@StevenPeeters So sorry bud, I put my foot in it, I remember that well
@@mikey2348 Sorry to disappoint you. I never ever play video games.
@@StevenPeeters Yeah, good choice
It gets to 328 so easily it seems, definitely it could go faster if it wasn't limited.
Apparently, there is a company that has some kind of way to remove the limiter. But most likely, it will remove the warranty as well. 😉
@@StevenPeeters It might also prevent future software updates to the car. Don't do it! But like you alluded to in the video, maybe a future update will increase it, Tesla has a habit of releasing such updates ! 😁😁
@@jonjoe42 We had Insane and then Insane+ came out. We had Ludicrous and then Ludicrous+ came out. History teaches us that Plaid+ is a very real possibility...
❤
Steven, I love your regular videos and your awesome work regarding Autopilot in Europe. But I really feel that you shouldn't have done a high speed run on public roads. It's dangerous enough on the 3-lane stretches, but going 300+ on a 2-lane section is just reckless. Nobody, even on a German Autobahn, has to expect somebody approaching from behind THAT fast! You cover so much distance in one second, maybe they even looked in the mirror and you were somewhere on the horizon. So they start to change lanes and bam!
§1 of German road traffic regulations states:
(1) Participation in road traffic requires constant caution and mutual (!) consideration.
(2) Anyone who takes part in traffic must behave in such a way that no one else is harmed, endangered (!) or hindered or bothered more than is unavoidable under the circumstances
So I'm gladly being the party pooper here, but the Autobahn is neither a race track nor a test track.
🤓🤓🤓🤓
@@Kryorgin The only time there were only 2 lanes, there was no one in front of him.
He first overtook a single car, so no risk of it overtaking. As soon as he saw several cars, he braked.
In all other cases, there were 3 bands.
You may not like these speeds but it's legal, whether you like it or not.
Thank you for noticing that. I indeed keep safety as the most important thing when trying this. This is why I do not recommend doing this yourself. There were a lot of other opportunities on the road that day to try the top speed, but because traffic did not allow for that in a safe way, I did not do that. At these speeds you really have to reconfigure your mind to look so much further ahead. It is definitely not for everyone.
Tesla… very ugly car design
Thank you for your opinion. I beg to differ 🤷♂️
