A year ago, my old 1995 Craftsman's lawn tractor engine blew up. Fortunately, I was able to buy a used 2007 Craftsman LT2000 for $20 from my local repair shop guy because he said it needed too much work, and he was planning to junk it. I was able to swap most of the parts from my old mower to the new one and then spent $120 to get it back in good working order. I was so proud of its restoration, I took pictures of it and showed them to the repair shop guy. It ended up looking almost brand new. (It took 5 weeks to repair it.)
A few weeks ago, I discovered he had another one in similar condition and asked if I could buy it because I wanted a second mower to mow my field. His response was, "I'll sell it to you but not for $20." In the end, we settled on $100 for the machine. He's the only small engine repair shop in a town of 10,000 and has far too much work. That's why he's willing to sell them so cheap. But I don't think I'll ever again be able to buy one from him for $20. 🤑 Because he now knows I can fix them. 🙄

Some of the best machines are the free ones. You may put up to a hundred or two into it, but if it serves you two yrs or more it's a great bargain.
Honestly the way these cheaper built single cylinder Briggs engines goes, he probably actually prolonged its life by not servicing it lol. I’ve heard some horror stories with these, to wear they design the air filer to not fit tightly around the intake so it still lets dirt in the engine and prematurely wear the engine out. So by not even touching the filter it may have eventually molded itself to the shape of the intake and sealing off lol. Changing it, it wouldn’t have that molded in seal, and would’ve just kept a loose fitting air filter on it. That’s Briggs’s way of making the engine wear out faster forcing you to either buy another engine, or a whole new lawn tractor, which means more money in their pockets.
So the B&S executive staff called in the engineering team and had them join into a secret criminal cabal meant to defraud the public? Wowzers.
No is the answer. People are asking 2k plus for 15 year old mowers in my area. A new deck costs more than half what I bought a new unit for 20 years ago. I ended up buying a welder and metal and repairing my deck for under 100. I expect it to outlast the crap they sale as new today.
I have a 2012 Cub cadet ltx1045 that looks and operates like a new mower.
I’d sell it for $500 but I don’t do social media to advertise it.

It very hard to find less than 4/5 hundred now and there usually junk or engine blowed up 😢
