On English teaching in school, you nailed it on the focus in grammar rather than on daily conversation. This is probably because most native Thai's English teachers don't speak much English themselves (especially upcountry). So the only way to teach is through books and grammars. Plus all the English school exams are all grammar focused.

Actually, you need to start with Grammar. How do you think Filipinos learn English at the age of 5 or 7? Even Americans study grammar and composition. Grammar is not important in communication. But in the learning process it is ESSENTIAL. Why do native speakers of English say it not important???? Because 98% of these English Teachers from America can’t even write a simple paragraph about themselves or their pet. These ESL teachers only bought a Teaching Certificate from Phuket or Pattaya. They are not educators who understand the process of aquiring a foreign language because they can’t even write poetry or compete in extemporaneous speech contest.

@@eduardochavacano Grammar is part of the learning I agree if you want to learn proper English. But unfortunately majority of English teachers don't speak English well or at all in some areas so the lack of ability to teach proper pronunciation doesn't help. Kids can pick up proper grammars naturally by speaking and listening to people speaking proper English the way babies learn to talk.

Most male thai highschoolers go through “military training” classes 4 hours a week for three years (Most of the time we just sit around and do nothing and wait until we are allowed to go home). After three years, they no longer need to do the lottery draft, because they’re technically already trained. This is a much better deal than being a full-time professional soldier for two years.
From my knowledge, most boys (including me) decide to voluntarily enroll in the highschool military training program. As minors (under 18 years old), the soldiers can't treat us too harshly. But if you decide not to enroll in the program, you might get unlucky and have to serve for two years once you're an adult. The training for adult soldiers is much much harsher, and they punish you a lot more than they punish highschool trainees. It's basically a choice between voluntarily choosing easy training, or take a gamble and you might face much harsher training.
We call it the highschool training รด. (Ror.Dor.).

I just never come across this topic when it comes to them. But I have seen old pictures of these artists in military-like uniform when they're in high school. I guess thats probably the military training you mentioned. Correct me if I'm wrong 😁

When I first moved to the UK, I was in like Year 5 and I can barely speak English because my school was basically teaching grammars and random words/topics rather than the actual conversations or reinforcing the verbal practice. And not to mention it’s mainly American English so it wasn’t helpful 😂😭 Also, I think your Thai covers sounds great 😊

For the military service, there's also one alternative which is the most popular but foreigners rarely know about. That is during high school you receive military training every Friday at the camp for three years. Then you are excluded and won't have to volunteer or do the lottery pick at all. All the boys at my high school and many other schools do that, so every Friday there's class to only 10:30am and the girls get to go home early.

    Hello, I'm from Thailand.
I really appreciate knowing that many foreigners view our country in a positive way. The good side that some of us haven't noticed yet.
I'm glad there are still many people who don't see Thailand as just a brothel (That what you guys often call a "ping-pong show"?).
Alright, let's get back to answering your questions in this video clip!
    1. Subject of military conscription : Of course, Thailand has not fought with anyone for a very long time. But the generals of Thailand often give reasons for conscription that "For the security of the nation, religion and the king," but personally I view the Thai military conscription as a budget for the fiscal year. And it was meant to serve generals and kings.
I would like to add that The reason why Thai people are afraid of being a conscripted soldier This is because the quality of life of soldiers is very poor in Thailand. And often, low-ranking soldiers were killed by their commanders simply because they disobeyed their commanders.
    2. As for that Thai song ... I don't want to comment. because I have no knowledge in this field. I can only say that In general, songs about broken hearts or sad songs tend to sell better than conventional songs.
    3. In the matter of learning foreign languages in Thailand Thai teachers in general schools have no idea about child developmental process. So they didn't know what a child at this age should learn to be appropriate. and the problematic part is Teachers cannot teach differently from the curriculum enforced by the Ministry of Education. Personally, I think the curriculum set up by the Thai Ministry of Education is completely ineffective.
4.about TV programs in Thailand I don't know how today is. because although I live in Thailand But I haven't watched TV for a long time because I've never liked the way TV content is presented in Thailand so if I want to consume entertainment or news. I'll turn to the internet instead.
    5. Social media I don't know why Thai people use it so much. But I feel that on social media where everyone can hide their identity is often filled with toxics, harassment, bullying. and a weird logic that I don't really understand

Personally, I have spent a lot of time studying about Thailand. I even have a degree in Thai culture, so I hate it when I read braindead comments by by morons that have visited Pattaya a couple of times and judge the whole population based on the sex workers they have met. 555 Paddy. I liked this video. I'm well into my 70s and I think that retiring to Thailand at 55 was the best decision for me. I share most of your discomforts. Thai culture is hierarchical; I may hear of Thai people complaining to each or to me about things they do not like but it is unthinkable for them to consider saying any of these complaints to anyone who is seen to be "higher" (look at the 14 levels of polite formality of referring to yourself or referring to another person directly as "you". Thankfully, I can stick to phom and khun). No Thai will criticise the way men are selected for military duty or the inadequacies of education to anyone in authority. Thai popular music does seem to be different words to the same tune. I have also taught English; students use the word "seng" to describe their English teaching. It was just grammar, grammar, grammar, often taught by a teacher who never spoke any English to them. Students describe it as "seng" and are reluctant to learn from me, until I make it fun, interactive and relevant. "Kruu, mai kowjai." "Mai pen rai. Tong jam." (I don't understand. teacher. - That doesn't matter. You must remember it.) I don't watch Thai television (though it might improve my Thai). Social media usage is excessive. It's almost like a permanent umbilical cord to family and friends. I had a live-in male housekeeper for the first few years. He and his mother would phone each other at leat 12 times daily each - usually more frequently. "What do you need to talk about?" What we are doing now. What we are eating now. That we think it will rain. That the neighbour next door had bought tangmo at the market and gave me a slice. Goodness knows what would happen now that he has bought her a mobile phone with internet apps. When internet implants can be surgically at birth inserted then they will be totally connected to everyone all the time. Most of these things don't irritate me but I shrug my shoulders. For me, some of it will be because of my age, it's a generational thing. Until I was in my 20s I had to walk half a kilometre to a telephone box to make a phone call.

As for number #1, it's not like people agree with or want to be enlisted in the military. There's nothing we can do about it. Most men don't want to go especially those who have the mean to find a good career. There's no changing that law especially now that we are under military's regime and it won't be for a long time. It sucks.
For number#5, because our outdoor life sucks. For Bangkok, there's nothing much to do or see except going to the malls which can get boring real quick. Public transportation in the country side isn't great. It doesn't really support outdoor activities for a lot of people. So people stuck with their smartphones. It becomes the only mean to entertainment for many.

English education in Thailand seems to focus on academic style, curriculum rather than English for everyday use. I recalled when I first learned the language, the grammar and tenses were insane, how's on earth a typical Thai would know this lol. I was able to start to catch these stuff after I finished my college and worked in the business settings, where there were more foreigner, like Singaporean, Burmese, etc. I think the lack of opportunities to interact with English speaker person is key. This is why many Thai teenagers go to the protest and talk about this stuff. Nobody wants to lose their work opportunities after graduation in the crappy military place. Sadly enough, our voices were never loud enough to reach nor been discussed in the parliament.

(About me : im half thai half netherlands but im more thai because i lived more in thailand than netherlands)
As i'm 14 yrs old thai person. i will tell you guys my opinion.
#1 so this thing i dont understand " why " like who else? you need to choose to learn basic milltary at 15-16 for three years while you are learning at school or choose the tickets at 18-19. this is something that needs to be changed.
#2 About the song. I think the most popular musics will always have love or dramas thing but not all of musics have that tone ofcourse they also have some musics that are different and popular. This is pretty much that i can say because i dont listen to thai popular musics that much. i listen just only to know what school friend are singing or talking about it.
#3 I will talk two things about this is
    1. thai education system i mean not only english but almost all of them are ridiculous for me. yes you learn because you will get smarter but as you say in the video they dont teach to use in real life. Because for english most people thinks that grammar is everything
    2. thai (school, etc.) socials about years ago i dont know if it changed. Thai people (not all) would say that " you are not that great, why are you talking that accent are you trying to be unnatural because when you talk english ofcourse you need to learn the basics the words that you used right? and when you have some of that you will get some accent to make it alot easier but thai people (not all) says like that and makes some people that really want to learn to stop learning and thai people hate losing face so dont care about socials be on your own or care about socials but stop learning english. (by the way it's not racist but they dont support if you are highly educated because they thinks that they are cheating or something like that) And these things also needs to be changed.
#4 um about this i think it's way more funnier more impact if you added sound effects or other similar things. for me i am not a guy who like to watches tv show everyday so i. but some of thai people also didn't likes it ofcourse and i think they will say like paddy in the video. And a simple answer is that thai people likes funny things or comedies.
#5 I think thai people are shy or another thing because they dont want to comment in real life cause people that disagrees you will judge the comment. But in social media allows you to talk with out showing face. So you can say anything no one will judge you even if they does people that agrees with you will talk and talks reasonable with people who disagree. and thats new because now you can talk with out being judge instead of that people will talks reasonable. and why are you being judge? cause thai people are conservative.
and thai people are.. bored? well i mean thai peoples always looks for something you interest like musics fashion foods etc. so you can search them in social media .
that is it for now if my english is bad im sorry for that i just wanted to comment my opinion
if you wanted to add more details or disagree of something that i said feel free to comment

For the military draft in Thailand, there two other ways to avoid conscription:
One way is to join the ROTC courses for three years, starting at grade 10 (for American) or year 11 (for British).
The other way is to register your residence in a province where there are high amount of volunteers for the military, in which there would be no drafting there

Hey. Nice you are creating content like this.
As a half Thai (ลูกครึ่ง) living in Thailand for over 95% of my life with both Western and Thai exposure, and in turn values, I'd love to add onto your observations. It'd be great for viewers to hear expanded explanations and reasoning for them, based on a 'local' living here. Mind you, these are observations/opinions and they are more than likely debatable, which I welcome, but please be cautious and respectful about it 😀
    1. The military service, I assume, stems from the country's still lingering military influence on politics. Thailand is also a hierarchical society, and there is always a need for those in power to 'show who's boss'. I went through the draft as well, so that's my experience on it.
    2. Thai songs tend to be either about love, or equally, about rejection mainly because there is an almost acceptable culture of men having mistresses, thus breaking many girls' hearts. This stems from the past where men did actually have mistresses. But, as it is becoming the norm here, where modern values integrate with past practices, many can't seem to balance them or realize which to abandon.
    3. English education stems from the education system here: it is more about scores than actual knowledge. So kids will remember all the technical stuff, even willing to cheat/copy (sometimes teachers allow this) for that score. I've seen kids know all the grammar, yet can't hold a simple conversation. In turn, Thais hate losing face, so they are afraid to make mistakes (this stems a bit from the education system too).
    4. Thais love slapstick comedy. Works on a surface level, but becomes stale very quickly. The language lends itself well to this type of comedy. Again, this can be annoying for some, but it is also one of the reasons why Thailand is desirable to live in or visit: the smiles and fun (sanook/สนุก) vibe. It is infectious.
    5. Social media, again stems from face. The country is conservative by nature, so one is discouraged from criticizing, anything really. Social media allows people to do so without showing face, so to speak. In turn, Thais are constantly looking around for trends (fashion, music, even opinions) to follow. So, there is a big market for social media content for people to follow.
Did you make these connections too?
Again, thanks for the video. Very insightful observations and good basic knowledge for anybody looking to come and visit.

5 the chances of getting the lottery depends on where and when usually there's around 8-2 ratio or 80% of not having to serve the military. but can change eg. when i took it it was 50-50 since they needed people

    2. Thai music has not really moved forward and has been criticized for following the same formula for decades. Since the days of Tata Young
    3. We've relied on native speakers to teach us English for a century now yet we still have a hard time producing quality Thais who can teach English
    4. Thai television is also terrible. As a matter of fact, have the worst actors in Asia. And their comedy shows are all slapstick.

For conscription, I think you missed some point.
If you are did not held a bachelor degree when the drafting process.
    - Voluntary for service, 1 year
    - Lotto, 2 year
If you are graduated at least a bachelor degree.
    - Voluntary for service 2 years
    - Lotto, 1 year
If you are studying then you can do the drafting after you have graduaged.
    Or
You can join a national reserve course during your high school and you will automatically exempt from conscription.

Number 4 is the same not only in Thailand but also in East Asia: Japan, South Korea, China, etc. The visual effect, text, sound, and over-the-top presentation. You need to watch a certain amount of such shows to get used to that particular style which is the polar opposite of how they do where I'm from (Canada). The point about social media and the English language also is the same in East Asia. Thailand is playing catch up on everything even what doesn't work.

You might be asking than how did you learn English I learn it from UA-cam talking to people, School didn't taught me anything they were so focus on Grammar like I bet a lot of English people barely use these ? ! Fun fact: Reason Thailand is land of smile because we loooooong ago we don't know English. So we don't know how to respond to foreigners, so we just smile.
edit: I was joking, that was not the *main* reason. It because we were happy people not much serious, anyone that we met we just smile so that why foreigners call Thailand Land of Smile.

I feel like English teaching is endemic to most asian countries tbh. Sadly, in school, we learn English just to pass or get good scores in exams and nothing else. Listening and speaking skills are hardly ever tested on.

For conscription, no matter way you choose you can present your education degree for serving duration. For example, if you are studying in a university and chose a lottery. Unfortunately, you picked the red. You can show your document proving you are university student or higher vocational college, then you will serve for only six months. High school or lower vocational college student will serve for one year.

Thailand has no conflicts with its neighbors, there is no need for such a large army, the Army is not for any external threat, the main purpose of the army is domestic, its used for military coupes, political power and to keep the citizenship under control
Essan songs are more diverse, they sing pretty much about everything
Thai tv is similar to every asian TV out there
Thailand is a land that worships everything and everyone, they are born to worship a particular family, as they grow up it extends to everything in their life, social media just allows them to extensively express their worshiping skills

    1. Conscription. It’s the culture of quiet obedience. You do what you’re told. Never really question the logic of it. Lottery? It’s stupid and unfair but hey, why think about it? I could just draw black and never need to have a single thought. Take vaccine for instance, we make a big fuss about vaccine type but never the question of ‘why we must be vaccinated?’. This is Thai altruistic. It’s a responsibility toward others so we don’t really question that whereas people in the other liberal countries give their governments hell for even just asking nicely. Always collectivism before individualism.
    2. Music. Not knowledgeable enough to comment on that. Same with Thai Lakorns. Our art has not yet evolved beyond the point of romance and heartbreak. The reason for that I would say is because we’re easily entertained and we’re in dire need of breezy escapism and petty things. So the the industry has no incentive to develop beyond that.
    3. Language Education. Coupled with our reserved nature, the educational system and methods in this country are archaic which make learning languages, not just English, unpractical and uninteresting for the students.
    4. TV Shows. Definitely influenced by Japanese and Korean media. Lots and lots of game and reality shows. Well, we’re not quite an intellectual crowd and has never been encouraged to be one. Also, we need easy escapism.
    5. Stars and Social Media. I would say in short that we’re nosy. But it’s probably complicated than that. It’s a sign of an immature suspicious crowd. We like to be judgmental and critical toward things that don’t directly concern us as an outlet for everyday’s mundane life and our disappointment in the state.

Tbh, military draft process in Thailand is outdated and life quality of a conscript is considerably poor and there a handful case of cruelty against life of a conscript as well. (not kidding, you can look that up)
So why don't we changed it? Well...., because Thai military have the most political influence as much as government.
If a civilian government try to reduce thai military's power or it's budget, guess what....they got coup d'etat.
the reason why military draft process still exist is because it's a main way of thai military to keep a total budget gain per year intact.
the more conscript in service, the more money goes to annual military total budget.
Which if you consider that there a lot of internal corruption among a top brass and high rank military personal in Thai Army, that mean someone is gonna gain a ton of money from it.

1.Military draft: actually, a lot of thais try to change the process or even abolish the draft. but we still a conservative country, so it go a long way before this happen.
Another thing is due to class structure in thailand. a lot of middle to high class boy can be exempt from the draft from the "Territorial Defense Department" part-time soldier study that take around half of a day every week for 3 years. So people that happen to be at draft lottery are mostly lower class citizen(and some actor who can't cut his hair to military standard due to work) So people who oppose the draft are only activist and lower class citizen, it not having enough push to make a change.
2.Pop music: mostly due to only few top song writer in thai and a lot of song writer just take inspiration from those top one. So it end up all the same with only some gem appear once in 2-3 years. and for the love song, that the problem we had for at least 30 years now. you can even go back to the stand-up comedy around 25 years ago who talk about this too. lol
3.English Study: The problem is due to the Test. I'm not sure who responsible for this, but most of the english test in thai school system are all about gramma. So the school need to focus on teaching gramma or student gonna fail the national test and bring down the score for the school. that why the thai student need to remember the tense stucture and around 200-300 verb(with those 2-3 form of it) but can't even talk in english.
    4. Thai televistion: I think the overuse effect is not from thai culture(10-15 years ago they not even use the effect at all) this I think it an influence from Japan and Korean style televistion that use a lot of visual effect in the show.
    5. thai sns: actually, it not about sns, but internet as a whole. Thai video can even go up to 100m view in 2-3 day. thai people can make no.1 spot in popcat game(game about clicking on the cat) in 3 day while other take 5-6 months. the reason is... we just have nothing to do. lol

I am thai and i feel the same way as Paddy toward thai culture (because i have adopted western mindset into my system). By observing the habits, mindset, activities through myself and people around me, it takes me to the history of us. In the past our ancestors had such hard time living their lives without any conveniences, especially the area that lacked few resources for a living. That makes thais believe that hardship and suffering are life. The arts reflect how people think and live, that's why it's plenty of it since then. And when the arts relate to people lives, they feel relief from psychological pain (the monk who is called Buddha did give some hint about the way to be free from the pain but people havent been seeking for peace and that's why people started taking it as religion).
Based on history timeline, Thai and/or Asian people used to have simple mindset following Eastern philosophy which is opposite to western philosophy that they started THINKING systems for thousand of years. There is no right or wrong, just being used to it or not.
In my opinion, Thais are burning out from western culture that just came in and fire up into daily life so quickly. We dont know how to deal with it.
Everything has its own evolution and there will be differences between space and time.
