    Coming back to this after the Rekkr and Gjallarhorn were released, thought I doubt Jason and the others will see the comment. I got my Gjallarhorn today and it is great. I was the one who had posted the question about the smaller size amp. I saw the blog post on Friday night and instantly knew I needed to order one. I then struggled with the 1 Rekkr vs 2 Rekkrs vs 1 Gjallarhorn to replace my Vidar 1. Watt anxiety got the best of me (even though I never got the Magni Heresy in low gain mode up past 25% or so on the Vidar) and I ordered the Gjallarhorn. It's great and now I can leave the volume at about 33% in low gain mode. Maybe I should have gotten 1 or 2 Rekkrs. I just wanted to say thanks for a great amp. My desk space is reclaimed and this seems to run much cooler than the OG Vidar.

      @@1jhnpennington Nono, you can't master a vinyl *too hot*, which defeats the point of compression (loudness). But if the compression is *already there*, there's nothing stopping you pressing a compressed (not clipped/brickwalled, mind you, but still compressed) signal onto a record.
      Granted, usually when mastering for vinyl they will use less compression. But sometimes, these days, they don't even master for vinyl. They just RIAA-curve the digital transfer.

    I have two Vidars and they sound amazing! Originally I bought one and it was such a huge difference between what I had previously, a class D emotiva 50 watt amp, so I got a second one about a year afterwards. I've got really big Tekton speakers so two Vidars are good for those. I can definitely rattle the foundations if I want, but just get super clean output with good soundstage.

    I bought and own quite a bit of your products and I can tell you without a doubt and I'm sure I'm not the only person to have ever told you so, but what you really guys really need to do is.
    number one: a higher end phono stage, and I know that the mani 2 is fantastic and sounds great doing it. I kind of get the impression you guys kind of hinted about it here a little bit or maybe you were hinting at a step up transformer of sorts for like a moving coil using the Nexus stage.
    number two: a tube power amp, or maybe some sort of hybrid style configuration. you guys have talked about it before and have talked about having built a prototype tube power amp but it would be nice to have that as a functional product. The hybrid style has become quite fashionable over the last decade, with a lot of companies making highly received products that effectively have some sort of tube input stage feeding a solid state output. I know Jason has his thoughts on things when it comes to how things work and how he wants them to work and how a hybrid style power amp would fit into that mentality, I'm not sure, but that would be a fantastic product.
    oh by the way I know you guys hinted at it but I just ordered a Gjarrarhorn for my bedroom system and I'm so excited to receive it. Heck I may do a video with initial impressions just to get people interested in it.

    Part of the issue in the wider "Hifi" industry is that from a PR perspective many amp manufacturers will claim to be "Full Class A" but in reality they are A/B with a strong emphasis in Class A. It is a bit of a lie much more prevalent in power amps. A problem with Real class A is that from an energy and power perspective it's very inefficient a great deal of energy is lost to heat. So the "greenies" and the government have pushed people towards A/B and D to be more energy efficient. Real Class A is a lift dualie pickup truck roaling coal and a pair of testicle hanging from the tow hook. The Prius and Tesla drivers hate us but the sound is oh so sweet. For example even Luxman and Accuphase will advertise as full class a or pure class a when they are not.

    Guys, I asked this question like million times, and I hope someone will finally give me a piece of answer: if I use Freya + in solid state buffer mode only (find it eventually to give more depth to sound stage and more precision, trading off dynamics etc) would Freya S work better for me (my system)?

    • @scottlowell493
      @scottlowell493 Рік тому +1

      I have a freya S, and have compared it. I've never had a solid state have more depth than tube. Going from freya s to the far more versatile freya + and better than stock tubes....there is no contest. That being said, the solid state floats your boat (I read Jason prefers the S) then save your money and just get the s.

    • @wojciechczupta9185
      @wojciechczupta9185 Рік тому

      @@scottlowell493 hi, thanks for taking effort to share your thoughts. I'm not sure I got which versions you are comparing? FS to F+ Solid State? Or F+ SS to F+ Tube? Please clarify. I will also elaborate a bit on my experience: I used to run Freya and then Freya+ on Tubes only. Number of configurations (though different for each). I found tubes superior - more punchy and airy sound, bigger stage. That was mostly with pair of stock tungsols in buffer (left side) and Chinese Full Music Gold. Then I did serious treatment of my room and it revealed a lot more stuff in the sound. After that I accidently switched to SS and was amazed how more detailed (a bit less punchy though) the music became. The shapes of sounds sources became more apparent and the scene moved a bit backwards. Though I have to add my room isn't ideal in terms of depth. Speakers (these are large ATCs) need to stand closer to the wall then I wanted - this decreases the first room mode at 32Hz. I also tested number of 10-20x more expensive preamps in the system before room treatment and didn't find much added value. It could make sense to repeat the exercise, but it is a lot of hassle. So my curiosity was coming up with a question - that maybe Freya S can be easy way to bring some improvements

    I wonder how much of a personal bias goes into thinking Class D doesn't sound good? Mostly based on old info and technology.

    • @Audiorevue
      @Audiorevue Рік тому

      well the truth of the matter is that it isn't that at least I don't think it is. in my own personal experience and I can only comment on what I've heard but having heard quite a bit of class d amplifiers over the last 5 years I can say unequivocally that to me they don't sound good. I've heard PS audio stellar series and I've heard the new NAD c298 that uses the latest modules and I've heard some of the older ncore stuff and I've also heard some of the rogue audio stuff and some of the belcanto amplifiers and some of it has sounded okay but only just okay, particularly the ncore stuff and the belcanto. as it goes though for me personally and I think it goes to say for others as well but they have a tendency to not sound very natural. for example go to a jazz concert or club and listen to a band play, you'll hear while sitting in the room the textures and the toneality of those instruments being played and I have yet to hear a class d amplifier that can reproduce those textures and tonalities accurately.
      now like I said I'm not saying they're terrible and they do have some good qualities, like their power output for a given size but when I listen to music I want to hear and feel those real instruments being played. And I'll tell you what when a class d design is capable of doing just that then I will happily jump ship from my class a boat.

      I don't believe it is and as a matter of fact they comment that in a couple weeks two products are coming out which are their new small desktop speaker amps and then they go to say that middle of March and interesting product is coming out unlike anything else on the market. I could be wrong but I feel that that's going to be the gadget, the long awaited and long anticipated gadget.
      they've been talking about this thing for years and for whatever reason it has been shelved or whatever but I believe what they're hinting at coming middle of March is the gadget. supposedly also at the end of the first quarter which is what April, they're supposed to come out with the urd which is their CD player/ DAC thing. I'm really excited for that one and I'm definitely going to be picking that up but if they release the gadget middle of March I'm going to get one irrespective of cost because it's an idea that just sounds fantastic. And if you listen to Mike moffett in an interview he did a few years ago and listen to his explanation of the gadget and what it did and does it just sounded phenomenal.
      unless of course I'm wrong and they're not going to release the gadget and perhaps they're talking about the urd in the middle of March and perhaps they're hinting at possibly having the gadget built into the urd which would be neat. And then that makes it double cool because you get a two for one right there.

Thinking back on it, a lot of class A I heard was just gooey and polite compared to class a/b. It's all about implementation and presentation, not topology. Most class D that I have heard as of 2023 has a pretty poor treble. It's rolled off and polluted with modulated noise. GaN is no different.
