Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles with my easel and headphones.

"Don't buy things you don't need. Don't buy things just because you saw some other artist use it. Don't buy things you don't understand. Let what organically you need come to you. You'll know it when you see it." -The best advice I've ever heard. thanks

Fan brushes are actually very useful for finishing detail, like hair or grass. I never use mine “stock” I’ll cut them to get textures that I want. Andrew Tischler actually has a video on this.

So basically you’ll know what you need when you go looking for it? I agree. I have 50 high priced brushes that I don’t love and yet I have found another brand I really like so I limited myself to 5. Round, flat, egg, sword and detail. That’s all, the others are now decoration for my studio.

@paintcoach what sparked my interest in painting was in high school. I took a painting class. Albeit I’ve always been involved in arts in school. There was a nature magazine with a seascape that looks very much like your painting behind you that I copied on top of the curriculum and I got it very close. Wish I had done fine arts major.. oh well let’s go!!

I took a little painting class from an artist once; and he recommended johnson & Johnson baby shampoo for washing / cleaning brushes. It actually worked surprisingly well, you could watch the oil paint be pulled out of the brush and get sort of trapped in the baby shampoo. Later on, when I took painting 1 in community college, I discovered a better love for an actual soap that I found at the local michaels for washing the paint out of my brushes at the end of class. I can't remember the names of the soaps, but one is a dark green bar soap; and the other, is actually a brush soap and conditioner in a round container.

Can you please recommend some good quality brushes on Amazon for acrylics and oil? There are so many crappy brushes and it’s SO hard to find good quality ones on there but I can’t order anywhere else.

Jackson's in London is good too. To Canada, Royal Mail shipping costs only 2 or 3 dollars.

Thank you for all the info. Sometimes I paint in acrylics and sometimes oils I have all my brushes together and I tend to just grab a brush to use and I’m not sure if I’m using an acrylic brush for painting in oil. Does it really matter?

Great advice. In addition to the brushes I know I like and use, I bought a few others out of curiosity. Guess what? I never use them, don't need them.

What's a good solid brush set to buy? I'm super beginner and bought my crap on amazon. But after one use (after turpentine) they are rigid. What brand is best to you? How do I ensure the bristles line up like they should OR should I just be be buying new brushes for each project?
