  • Simple to tell. Does your Briggs engine struggle to turn over . I show side by side a working compression release and a broken one . You can tell by the bump. Follow me wtbm123 on Facebook and Instagram. How to tell if a compression release is broken on a Briggs and Stratton single cylinder engine. You must take the rocker cover off and check maybe adjust the valve clearance on a single cylinder briggs engine. Then you roll engine over and look for a bump. Briggs engine will not turn over. Is the battery good , Is engine hydro locked , is starter bad on the single cylinder briggs and stratton.See a broken compression release on a briggs stratton single cylinder .

    Great video and great explanation I like how you kept it simple and to the point yet clear to understand. I've been hesitant to replace these cams because I have a friend who ran a shop and he did a few using OEM and he would still have the problem come back

      It all depends on the condition of the engine . A lot are worn out , but many run great for a long time after

    So you replaced the de compression mechanism and it's happy again :-D
    Yes it could of been curtains for the engine (not quite the way you explained it) lol.

      Yea getting fancy . lol . I wanted people to see what it is supposed to look like and what it looks like broke. Hardest part was waiting on an OEM cam .

    I have a Kawasaki FJ400D engine from a 2008 EZ-GO cart in my 1991 Club Car DS, always had trouble overcoming the compression stroke, the other day i had it out replacing motor mount bushings and dropped it off of the block it was on, when it hit i heard things bang, no problem.. as i reinstalled the belts it had no compression, had me worried, now it cranks right up and still runs strong. Ive read these dont have a compression release setup, but ive seen photos that they do, if it does mine must have been stuck open and the drop knocked it loose as the stops have heads on them, my thinking was one cought the counterweight and held it open..
    Works better now anyways.

    Interesting design that could really tear up an engine . Any idea how many hours was on that engine.

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  Рік тому +1

      Good question! No hour meter . It would be nice to know , and know the hours if it ever breaks again

    The other 2 issues with the engine is not turning over is a bad battery and hydro lock which is caused by to much oil in the crank case and gas has made it's way to the crank case

      Correct , I believe i talk about that when diagnosing it in the full length video that will come out later .Not even edited fully yet . Thanks for stopping in .

      I go OEM , More money , And some of the cheaper aftermarket ones may be ok , but i have had a fey cheap ones spin the lobes on the shaft after first start.

    I get whistle sound when i turn it over, what could this be? Very hard to start

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  4 місяці тому

      Hard to say with out hearing , Do you have a way to put air pressure in the cylinder , like a leak down test to see if head gasket is leaking .

    And then there are videos that show how to start our engine after you break the compression release lever of the cam? WHY? All that does (other than start your engine) is throw the damage pieces all over inside the engine, possibly causing more damage! Not too smart.

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  4 місяці тому

      If i suspect compression release issues , i look at the valve movement first . You are correct if a broken part has not yet dammaged anything , Starting it could be the toime a broken part grenades the rest.
