This kind of situations feel much more intense for the person driving than the passengers. He had all the responsability for the lives of people on board while some didnt even realize what happened until the end

@Bennybass park is neutral with a tiny metal pin holding things still. If you have enough force to break it you're just in neutral.
South African here: Cars are inspected when they leave the brand new showroom. that's it. If you buy a van or a car in South Africa you buy it as it is so no MOT or Inspection. Most cars and Vans will fail your standard Inspection if put through it. So the breaks going is a common one because van rental companies don't have time or want to spend the money to fix stuff. it eats into their profit.

In the heat of the moment im sure it would have been hard to figure out how to keep them alive but if it was a manual transmission he could of used the engine to break 🤷🏾♂️. Still dope he got them out alive on this one. Nuge is a goat
He's saying he's in 1st, so I guess that's what he was trying to do. Can't do much when the hill is too steep though.
I thought this too.. but it wouldn't have done much in 1st gear. Also if the brakes failed I'm worried if the clutch may have failed after extensive engine braking. Definitely worth a shot though

I know here in the states they have mandatory stops and brake checks while going down mountains and hills. I’m not sure what the reason is for brake failure like this. Is it the pads and rotors or something to do with the hydraulics like the pistons or a line or something?
no South Africa don't have car inspections after you buy the car. You pay a car tax for the car to be on the road but that could mean any car in any condition.
Vincent, what I mean is before you start down a mountain road or a steep hill there are street signs that tell you to tap your brakes to make sure they are working. For heavy trucks they even have places for them to pull over to give their braking system time to cool down. They also have these areas towards the bottom that are places you can turn off into, it’s a roadway filled with loose gravel and deep sand that slows you down and brings them to a stop. Not a tax or inspection sticker.

gotta keep off your brakes so you have them when you need them. Hill driving aint easy. Old manual trucks have really low gears under 1st to slow down

His quick thinking to turn left and not continue going down the hill saved them. If he kept going down the hill they would have picked up more speed and would all have died. So thats how he saved it.
You are supposed to shift into the lowest gear, then engine braking stops you speeding away.
