Miss Hoss Thanks for wondetful show It really brought some great memories of my life. I had a aunt uncle that ran a general store in hitchman ks. The wooden floors type places. They had a 30 gal. Wooden barrel full of pickles. The farms would bring in the cucumbers to make the pickles. Jars of eggs and pig feet. What a great memory I thank you again. I just canned 100#. This is my 65th year of doing so The Breez
A while back you were sprinkling a commercial herb/spice mix on fresh veggies and I cannot find the episode or recall the name of it. I have lots of veggies now and want to try it. Thank you for all the advice!
I'm in the Northeast so cucumbers have just started coming in, had our first ripe tomato, summer squash coming in also. Now all the fun starts. I have some miniature tomato plants for the deck and the are doing well, one of them is loaded, the yellow is a little behind but not much. Can't wait for a ripe one to taste.
Rotflmao.....Greg is always starving! Greg: You got this? Im ready for supper....I can't be bothered by this show right now. Momma Hoss: Greg, can you help a sister out? Sheeeze....😮😮😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hi. After boiling n adding vinegar for brine, what temp does your brine have to be before pouring over the cukes? So you don't cook the cukes n not have a soft cucumbers. Thanks for sharing the brine recipe. Peace to you and yours
I have attempted the air layering on my mango tree, I have had no success, but will keep at it. Would love to try some figs do you think they would grow in South Florida?
I just wonder if everyone had good luck on their tomatoes this year I put out 12 plants, and had over 380 tomatoes. Great year in the garden thanks to Hoss, for all the information over the last several years. The cover crops I’ve used has help that soil. My hat is off to Greg . I’ll be calling for more cover crop in few weeks.
I know this isn't up y'alls ally but I think it would be nice if you did a little segment on raised bed growers that have itty bitty yards. I live in NC and my yard is tiny so I have to do raised beds. I just put out the max packs and some sa dandys for my late summer "crop".
@@gardeningwithhoss Well as I said my yard is itty bitty so I have one that is a 6 x 6 in an L shape that my tomatoes are in. They're about done now. Then I've got 3 that are 2ft beds. 2 of them have my cucumbers in them with a wire arch going from one to the other. The other one I put the Sa Dandy's in until I pull up my tomatoes. I was going to order the Okra to put there but y'all were sold out. I'm hoping to take out a bush or two and make my space bigger next year. I also have peppers in 50 gallon barrels.
Figs can be grown in zone 6 with winter protection, using varieties ( like Brown Turkey, Hardy Chicago, etc.) that mature early. Near me many Italian Americans do very well with varieties that came from Italy. A good site (facing S or SW and next to a brick or stone wall) helps a lot.
Different seeds store better than others. For example Tomatoes and Peppers can be stored over 10 years. Others do not do as well. Any seed with a high oil content does not store as well.
Great show! I love me some fermented pickles, too! My cucumbers did okay - I managed to get enough to put us several jars of pickles before they bit the dust. All that early dry weather (That drip tape system saved them), and then the rains hit, ad with the rain came the disease. I wish there was some way to make products for pests and disease stick to the plants. It's simply a waste of good money to keep spraying when it rains every day, but I did get enough. Now I'm pickling okra, LOL!
Everyone in my neck of the woods have been giving away cucumbers, 😆. Thank you so much for mentioning the 10% solution as I don't have a refrigerator (or electricity in)!
Thank you again Mrs. Hoss and please keep the recipes coming! I'm really new at all of this.
More to come!
My chickens love cucumbers
Ha! A lot of them do!
Miss Hoss

Thanks so much
I grow Chicago Hardy outside Memphis and they are big dark figs not small. Many are golf ball size.
Wow that is a big fig.
I love it when your better half is with you on the show❤️.
I'd love to make those pickles BUT I don't have anywhere in my house thats cooler than 85 degrees. Would it still be possible?
Could you put a fan on them? Give it a try since you can do in a small batch.
I put them over our air conditioner vent in the coldest spot of the house.
@@gardeningwithhoss I'll try that, maybe it'll work!
@@sclindah If we had a house I would do that, we are still working on building. LOL.
I knew what the blossom end was but didn’t know it affected the pickling process. Thanks for the video.
It can! And you’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
👍

@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks. I will be trying Mrs. Hoss's pickle recipe.

Good show... Im definitely getting me some of them northern figs you talked about
Thanks Don!
Greg, that salad you made looked awesome. I swear, half the fun of this show is watching you eat everything y'all talk about
It was delicious!
Boy that salad looked good!

yes
I just ordered some fall cucumbers. I hope they work out because the spring ones were terrible
Same here. Our summer crop was not good. Wishing you luck.

If I bought some seed from hoss, and stored them in 'ideal' conditions... what sort of shelf life could I expect?
Different seeds store better than others. For example Tomatoes and Peppers can be stored over 10 years. Others do not do as well. Any seed with a high oil content does not store as well.
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you! very helpful
How do you store seeds for long term ?
@@splittail74 regulate humidity and temperature. dependent on the seed; but usually low humidity and low temperature...

Had a great pickle season. About to start a fall planting of Calypso and National pickling cucumbers
National picking is one of our favorites.
Hi, what happened to the gentleman that that did the video's with you? Haven't seen him in a while.
He left to start his own adventures
Did you soak your roselle seeds before you planted? If you did... for how long? Thank you!
Yes, soaked overnight in water
Great cucumber season here in southern indiana! I put out 12 hills and have put up over 50 quarts of pickles so far and there still coming on👍
Wow. that’s a lot of pickles. You will enjoy them this winter.
Have yall ever used coconut core? It seems to be a good alternative to pete.
yes we have in past. Not a big fan.
@@gardeningwithhoss that’s what I use is the coconut core. I’ve not used peat moss. Why not a fan of coconut core?

You can add a surfactant to it to help it stick. Below is the one we recommend.

PARTS ALL PARTS NEED TO BE MADE IN U.S.A. 10-4
We really try hard to accomplish this. It is our goal to do so when possible. Some of our parts are just not made here.
Do you have problems with grasshoppers
No we haven’t. On next weeks show Greg’s talks about them. Stay tuned.
Good experiment results in okra. I do not soak mine. Start up looks good. Thank you for sharing about future seeds.
