Starship | SN8 | High-Altitude Flight Recap

- Опубліковано 22 гру 2020
- On December 9, 2020, Starship serial number 8 (SN8) completed a high-altitude flight test as it successfully ascended, transitioned propellant, and demonstrated a first-of-its-kind controlled aerodynamic descent and landing flip maneuver - which will enable landing where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, including the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

These launches were easily the best part of 2020. There’s something so beautiful about witnessing our dreams unfold.
What means to you about dreams, it beyonds all the religious & social laws, when you above these all, nothing seems to be dream

@@niteshkumar-xv6xr huh ??!
It is amazing to see what was once a render become real
Meh, better the atlas V launch for perseverance
When I watched this live I thought everything was going horribly wrong on ascent when those engines started cutting out. I was so excited to hear later that it was all planned out that way and everything went perfectly until the engines didn't generate enough thrust at the very end. The flip maneuver was so amazing. Unbelievably impressive - it's rare for me to get so giddy with excitement :D. Nothing beats watching those twin boosters landing synchronously from the first Falcon Heavy launch, though. That's the moment where I was like "yep, we're all living in science fiction now." I'm sure I'll feel that again when we get some successful landings from Starship and Super Heavy.
We live in the future
Don't worry! We would probably be able to reliably land SN12, if I'm being conservative, and SN10 if I'm optimistic.
The type of landings that Super Heavy does have already been done with Falcon 9, we just need to test the technology so expect BN8 to stick a landing.
We'll be able to start full Starship (The Whole Rocket) testing around Late 2021 to Early 2022 if we're being optimistic!
P.S: I forgot to mention that The Full Starship will most likely be tested with orbital flights, no more 12.5km flights by then.
I hope one day they do a twin starship launch+landing :)
Glad i'm not alone, the way those engines were cutting out and dangling to the side seemed like catastrophic failures to an outsider like me. But on the way down I noticed they were still functional. What a ride.
Idem
This is so fucking impressive. The engineers behind this should be insanely proud. The fact they're so close makes this one of the greatest technological achievements.
It gets better...
From Future : it's already landed successfully
4 months, 5 flights. That's all it took. Oldspace shaking in their boots. The future is here, don't get left behind.
The phrase “moon, Mars and beyond” gives a chill down my spine. Incredible
More like "escaping to orbit when the next wipe out happens". Time seems to be short so he is in a hurry.

Maybe not more exciting, but definetly on par with the moon landings.
Let me try something.. I WILL NEVER GET TO EXPERIENCE LEO IN MY LIFE TIME!
The Mars landing I think
Seems like a low bar to set. Moon landings were only one of the first steps towards space exploration.
Me too. being born in 1970 I missed all the excitement of that, and until recently there just didn't seem to be the will to do much beyond putting up satellites so far as manned exploration goes. We waited years for space agencies to do it, but it's now obvious that it would always be private industry that gets there first. Unlike the space agencies their budgets aren't controlled by penny pinching bean counters and their goals don't change as different politicians get elected so they can have longer term plans.
I really enjoyed seeing SN8's short flight, it achieved many new things and I'm sure that had it not suffered fuel starvation at the last moment then everything would have gone perfectly.
