  • The Smash Concept is a zone coverage beater and is one of the most popular concepts to attack Cover 2 or Cover 4. The concept creates a vertical stretch on the flat defender and can attack the middle of the field with supplementary routes if the Smash concept itself is covered.

I'd like to see more about the slot fade-smash combo. I feel like it was a niche play until a few years ago, but now it seems pretty common, especially at the college level.

I'll see if I can dig up enough clips to have some examples but here's that hitch / slot fade combo against Cover 3:

Teams are definitely enamored with the space that you get by running the fade from the slot and it forces the linebacker to carry it vertically since you can shave it a little if the corner outside stays deep and comes into play.

That waddles fav route in Miami. You have to have a burner but young coaches are using this more and more

This is kind of vague but how many concepts does a team usually have in their playbook? Will all teams likely have a version of the smash concept or do they each just have a few with lots of variations?

NFL playbooks mostly have a little bit of everything that at least loosely ties into their systems. Some teams use some concepts more frequently than others, but almost every team will have at least some variation of most of the popular schemes. It just might be run out of different formations, with different personnel, or with different reads.
