Marshall CODE vs Fender GT vs Blackstar ID Core - Digital Amp Shootout

- I recorded these clips just before returning each amp back to Rattle & Drum so that I could stitch them together for a shootout video. They were recorded in different months of the year, so it's not a scientific comparison! But this could still be useful for anyone who wants to hear the strengths of each amp.
** Disclaimer - the video is just placeholder clips - the visible settings aren't related to the audio. I can't remember what the settings were, I just dialed them in very quickly before recording **
With the mic-ed up clips you can definitely hear the difference between the speaker sizes on each amp - with the Blackstar having the smallest speakers, then the Fender, then the Marshall having the biggest. In the room though, the Fender and Blackstar produce some nice stereo effects and sound nice with their full range speakers.

Marshall code is absolute garbage, stay away from it.. Horrible sound and it have input lag on USB. It does not sound like the real legendary tube amp marshall.. You should go to a store and listen to all three instead of using this video. Marshal CODE realy is a horrible amp. Also this is a bad way to compare them. They all have amp sims, and the sound will change acording to the type of amp sim you choose and marshall CODE just beat a record of being number one worst sounding effect platform.

The razor mini mic is great. The code amp is great. You just don't know how to make it sound good

Great comparison! The CODE sounds so much better, especially when the speaker is eliminated! The others sound lame in the gain department, where the CODE sounds like a real amp!
Andy K thanks buddy... just checked out your videos - looks like you know your Marshalls! The JCM800 voicing on this is the best tone, it can be used for virtually anything, low gain to high...
I personally did like the other amps too, the bigger versions particularly really show some strengths when cranked!
Cool! The whole reason I would buy this is to stop squashing the big amps I always buy then sell! CODE sounds good at whisper levels, and I bet the head would sound cool with my Greenback loaded 4x12!

I thought I wanted a Code. I tried it out two separate times. I'm replacing an ID Core with another ID Core.
Got a code 25 it’s actually loud!! I take the cab off when playing I reckon it’s the best sounding, sounds like they have the cab on? Can’t go wrong with a Marshall and taking of the logo and breaking it off and turning it into mash all 🤟

Similar journey myself right now. Opted for the Blackstar ID:Core 10 V3, newer than the V2 in this video, and lower wattage than these, because I don't need it loud. Literally just got it, on sale for under $100. My wife is holding it for me for Christmas. I need to bust it out at least to check that nothing's broken though, so I don't sleep on the return window. Excited to check it out.
This is perfect comparison for me, as these three amps are my main favorites :)
There are lots of reviews and some love them, some hate them, some even destroy them for being so bad :)
This direct comparison of similar tones on all three miked and digital recorded is just what I wanted to make final decision, so thanx @bandviz!
If I may share my thoughts of what I heard in THIS comparison:
- clean tones: all three are pretty good, hard to say one is better than other, more a matter of preference;
If I had to order them I'd say Blackstar a bit crisper than Fender, Marshall maybe little worse in treble
- breakup sound: for my ears, Marshall is a clear winner here with really sweet tube like sound;
Blackstar is ok, but far from Marshall (maybe because it was probably played with less gain than Marshall?); Fender' breakup is plain ugly "digital".
- crunch and overdrive: Marshall nice, Blackstar ok, Fender again "digital" sounding, not as bad as breakup sound, but stil worse than other two
- distortion: I'd say Blackstar has an edge over Marshall and Fender here, Marshall lacking highs and Fender again sounding less convincing than other two.
I think differences are more dramatic in digital than miked recording, so probably hearing amps live, Fender might not be that bad in comparison to other two;
except for cleans - differences in clean are less pronounced in digital than in miked recording.
- Feature wise and versatility Fender is TOP with great user interface and most features, Marshall is somewhere in the middle
and Blackstar is probably most "simple", but stil has plenty of features.
- Cabinet/Speaker - both Blackstar and Fender have smaller dual speakers (ID:20 2x5", ID:40 and Fender 2x6.5"), Marshall has single 10" speaker.
Stereo might be considered advantage as it is more "ambiental" sound, but on the other hand, bigger single unit might be able to produce more pristine guitar sound.
This is nearly impossible to judge over UA-cam reviews and headphones - only real way would be comparing each of them in reality...
- Price wise all are really cheap for what they provide. Still Fender costs the most, Blackstar the least. I guess Blackstar Core ID:40 woud be more in the same price range.
Where I live, I can get Marshall and Core ID:40 for about same price, Fender costs about 30% more.
I dismissed Fender for its price and really bad sounding (to my ears!) breakup/crunch/overdrive - sounds that are most important for me beside clean.
It was hard choice between Blackstar and Marshall. First I was already "sold" to ID:40, but then changed up my mind and ordered Code25 for really nice breakup tube sound, big speaker and bluetooth connection (over which you can stream audio to jam along and configure everything on amp). Ordered it for €172 shipped and waiting now...
What is Your opinion? Do You agree with my thoughts or see/hear things differently?
This is insanely useful. Altho, Fender does sound worst, it’s not that bad I think. Oh and somehow the “Clean” part of the Blackstar sound kinda “out tuned”??, like idk it sounds pretty weird there.
But thanks to you I just decided to just get the damn Marshall knowing its price now lol.

I just bought a black star 100 watt 2x10 ID core. If you want to buy a black star amplifier I would recommend buying this one slightly larger at 299 American dollars from American Musical Supply. I don't know if you're located in Europe or not or Canada, but out of all these amps this is a very cheap small black star the one I have is nicer and bigger you would love it after reading everything you wrote sounds like what would work for you

all the presets come with cab on because of usb recording, but you might turn it off to playing it

Greate vid! Awesome! I actually started with a Blackstar but it had some fault: I could not store individual EQ settings so I switched for a Marshall Code 25, they had it in the store and I don't wanted to wait until another Blackstar ID core arrives. First I found the Marshall extremely "gutless" but it needed more time to dial in some more modern sounds I like.
Darel cheers buddy, thanks for your comment! The Marshall definitely needs the most time to dial in the sounds properly, the presets are often muddy sounding and the noise reduction is usually too high on default. Once you get there though, it sounds really good!

I am one of those people out here who are looking for this perfect compact budget amp, and this search is becoming not so budget anymore lol! anyways, I've been using a Yamaha THR10X for 2 months now, have just got a Marshal Code 25, will receive a Katana 50 in a couple of days, and may get a chance to try a second hand TVP15 soon. Will share my opinion on all of them if smb needs it. Interestingly, so much shit has been spilt on the Marshall Code in forums and comments, was getting nervous before it arrived, so far I do not think it is bad, I am starting to believe it is all about how much patience and time you invest in testing and getting the right sound, which this guy has done with this review, thank you for that.

Actually, I'm a drummer, I started with acoustic guitar in 2004, but when I started playing drums I never put my hand on the strings again, as my sister plays guitar, I figured it would be nice to get a bigger amp to make a jam, what is not happening now, so the 50 is overkill only to study xD

Im decided to go for a code, but struggle between a 25 or a 50. Some say bigger sound fuller. I dont know, since size is a concern to me, the smaller the better but i dont wanna get the 25 if ill miss a better sound overall

I've had the Mustang and it was decent but opted for the Blackstar ID core 100 and what a world of difference! Still having some freeze ups with the insider software but the amp is phenomenal! I don't know if I could find a better amp with as much diversity for the price.

I have owned a Marshall Code 25, and 50. I love it. I needed the built in ubs interface and the sound pallet that it has. If the Katana (yea i know its not on this video) had a interface I would have gotten it. The phone app is something I can not live without. I sold the Code 50 it was hella loud for the tiny home I live in. After 6 months I missed it so I bought a Code 25. Love to record with it and I gets sounds that I like. Bought some Zoom products that I just couldn't fall in love with.

I am a Marshall fan and I am about to get myself a Code but I have to admin Fender has some amazing cleans and I find Blackstar maybe superior to the others in the distortion/metal zone. Breakup and overdrive are the Marshall's ballpark 🙂
In any case we must consider that all of them provide infinite tone tweaking capabilities.

What was your mic setup here? Unless you are using a real mic (not built in to a video camera) - and using it with manual volume control - the sound is being affected a lot by the mic setup.

The marshall code has the most clarity across the board nice bass nice treble and high sounds no squeaking. If i had to choose it would probably be the code.

This is a pretty awesome video, thanks for making this. I had a question of my own. I was looking at getting two of these amps, one for my regular guitar and one for my baritone. I was looking at the Fender for those sweet, sweet cleans and the blackstar for the baritone for the head space and its ability to handle lower tunings better. Because of this video, I'm totally sold on the Fender because, to me, I thought it sounded the best when played clean and didn't sound too bad in the other areas. Do you think the Marshall would be better for the baritone or should I just go with the blackstar? I play Metal and Hard Rock.
Hey man, thanks for the comment! I think in your instance, with you playing hard rock/metal - buy a Blackstar (if you can get hold of one of the TVP amps, all the better) - go for a bigger amp if you can accommodate it. It can do the metal and rock stuff really well and produces some really nice cleans too. The Fender has some great chimey, break-up tones and surprisingly good rock sounds (plus some of the best tech) and the Marshall nails the fat, British style rock sound and has some great bluesy tones. Of the three though, I just think with your baritone you'll want a bigger speaker and more wattage to handle the headroom and output, and with the styles you're interested in I think the Blackstar would cover it.

The mustang is a great amp to practice on. The Bluetooth and wifi is great little feature for recording and the pedal loop and dub option is great if you like to work on your lead stuff to your own tracks . I give the win to fender. Plus the variety on the fender it way bigger. You can add all kinds of effects before or after the amp and the tone app has tons of presets you can add. It's well worth the money and I recommend it.

NICE, i have the code 50 & love it but i do like the sound of the gt40 & may get it.When i was looking around they didn't have the GT's & the code sounded better to me then the mustang.
Too bad you didn't have a Vypyr VIP 2 or 3 to test along with these.

The only issue I had was the knobs were at different settings for each amp so I don’t think this truly compares them, but it’s a good starting point
Totally agree (and on the Fender at least, the physical knobs weren't even set the same as the digital knobs, so the settings were really all over the place). Not to mention that they're all modeling amps, so knowing they're all on a similar mode/amp model would make a huge difference too, not just clean, breakup, crunch, etc. Sadly, this basically is just a collection of sound examples from each, mashed into the same video. Without making sure they're setup to the same baseline, there's really no comparison to be had here. However, it does at least show off some of what each can do. That could still be helpful to some, but who's to say the same sound in one can or can't be achieved by another? The relativity to one another is the part that doesn't work out, and is probably the most important aspect of a video being labeled a shootout. This is more like a Dance-off than a game of HORSE. Not going for sameness, but rather, showing of what one can do. Does that make sense? Sorry for mixing my metaphors. LOL.
The code isn't on or plugged to a guitar. None of them are videotaped as the music is being played. He's just showing footage of the amp you're listening too, not a "live" shot of what you're hearing.

Go to a store and try the code, it has over a 100 preset for blues, clean, gritty, distortion, rock, flanger, phaser, chorus, wah, lots of effects, plus speaker cab modelling.
I just purchased a 2x10 ID Core 100 W black star and did a show with it the same day that I got it me and four other guitar players shared this amp and it sounded absolutely incredible I would be surprised if any one of these other amps and the same price range can beat it
What i like about the fender gt 40 is,setting up ur own settings,eg,The Edge's sound for where the streets have no name.does the marshall code have that? So far i havenseen it in any demos. Just presets
I have used 2 of the 3....and the ID CORE has lot more base than this tinny video sound....and its stereo btw....the Fender has lot more base too and great set of tones .

I own a Marshall code25, and the Blackstar TVP15. I love them both equally. The audio with headphones is a lot better than out of the amp itself I think. I love the flat out heavy as fuck sound/tone(?) I can get from my Blackstar has much as I love the Metallica replicating tone, the awesome 70s tone and the epic 80s tones distorted and clean that I have on my Marshall.
I have seen a lot of shit been thrown in the direction of these two companies for these two amps. I don't know why, they are crazy good for the money and I cannot recommend both enough!

hey - The BLACKSTAR is sampling at a different Frequency - it's a higher pitch on the digital out. If you are reamping - that is not good! Do you know why or how this has happened? It sounds like it's gone from 44khz to 48khz or something very close to the other two in samples, but a little higher. Also are they clipping your inputs digitally ? or do they simply all have artifacts?

I don't know what you did in recording with ID CORE V2. I have ID 40 V2. It sounds much better than other two.
Melodic Goals I read your comment as: the Blackstar is better sounding than the other two in real life but not in this recording. The mic-ed up recording I feel is disadvantaged by the small speakers of the ID core 20, in my experience, placing an SM57 next to a 5inch speaker yields worse results than with bigger speakers. The digital out is straight in to the interface, so is a simpler test. My own personal opinion is that the ID Core 20 does sound significantly better in person than mic-ed, and is by far the easiest to get a good sound out of quickly. The bigger versions of this amp naturally sound better.

Melodic Goals yeah I've tried these amps multiple times with different gear. The gt fender just doesn't sound good on the dirt channel to my ear, the code was pretty ok to me, the blackstar had a much better sound to be honest but the code has a lot more options for effects. Blackstar to me sounds the best though.

Makeila Ventura for classic rock, like your GnR and scorpions, the Marshall will do you well, if you're after a heavier American style guitar tone I'd look to the Blackstar or something like the Boss Katana. If you're a beginner I doubt any of them will disappoint, but the Blackstar is by far the easiest to get going with.

I have the id core 20 v2 and DOESNT SOUND LIKE THAT !!! The clean sound are great and the distortion is very heavy. I didnt plug to the usb... i think it is too much impartial for the Marshall code.
Marshall CODE disappointed me. I expected it to sound better and I tried it out twice. I've had the Blackstar 20 V1 for years and I'm still impressed with the stereo effects and the big sounds that come from smaller speakers.
hey, i just started playing on my dad's electric guitar, but we have a very bad amp. I don't understand these things at all, but i was planning on buying the Marshall Code 25. Do you recommend this amp, or would another one be better? it is for home use.
Hey. Though I've not played one, I see a LOT of love online for the Boss Katana. I think all of these amps are decent in their own way, the Boss seems to be applauded enough to be a serious contender. I enjoyed each of the three amps in this video and can definitely say they each have their advantages.
I own a Blackstar V3 ID Core 10 for home use, this is more than sufficient in terms of power, the only drawback is that there are no separate tone controls, which means that the sound is somewhat limited and the price of this 10 watt amplifier is about the same as that one of the Fender Mustang LT 25
Any idea how these compare to a fender super champ?
I think the Marshall wipes the floor with the other amps. But I suppose that's just personal preferences and we're all different, are we not. The only negatives I can think of is that there is no option to connect an extension speaker, also how difficult would it have been to have more than one input.
OK, I stand corrected on my above statement, up to a point. I went and bought the Code 100 Combo, which actually has an effects loop and a speaker out jack. Cost? £349 a bargain. I'm well happy. Now I have to save up for another one, so I can play in stereo lol.
The Blackstar Amps are more to my liking,..this issue is a matter of just taste.
I prefer 100watts at least so I’m kinda biased to the Blackstar ID: Core 100 or 150...and it may not be the best in areas of Crunch or Overdrive where Marshals or Fenders have history but in my view,..the Blackstar can emulate them if tweeted properly & professionally. (..from my experience..)
But all that said,...these small amps have there place and use and one just has to know the need or application intended.
I for one was impressed by all.

I have an ID core 10. I am interested getting a Marshall, but also getting the ID 20. Which would you prefer?
An Enraged Pig honestly, if I were picking a smaller digital amp I'd be tempted to look at the Blackstar ID TVP 30. That's my personal preference... they cost a bit more than the Core range and it doesn't have a stereo speaker set up... but it has a 12 inch speaker and when I mic up amps I notice a huge difference between these little 5 inch speakers and a full size one. You may see that reflected in the comments below ;)
The stereo cab of the 20w Core does sound decent in the room though, and if you're just sticking with digital recording it will do you fine but I wouldn't expect a massive difference from your 10w amp. I say go bigger if you can. Cab size and speaker quality are very important contributors to your tone in my view. Any other questions just get in touch, I'll help if I can!

I have the code and I think I made the right choice after seeing this. I actually think they sound better miced even though at the time I chose a modeling amp in part because of the digital recording capability. One thing about the code that I don't know if the others have in the way of a disappointing flaw is that switching from one preset to another causes a delay of about a beat. If your rhythm is on plexi and you want your lead to be silver jubilee, there's a delay. There's a built in distortion effect that can be activated without the delay so that will get you where you're going but it's a bit of a disappointment. It's all digital anyway so it's just a mental thing that's it's not the jubilee but I don't really understand why they couldn't eliminate it.
Regarding the delay between presets, take into account that you are asking this amp to do something that will never happen in a real live situation, where you add or remove effects but not switch between different amps ;-)
I would try to switch on/off or tweak the effects inside a preset rather than change preset.

The Fender sounds the best but that just means it goes well with the mic you are using. Change the mic type and they all sound different again. I don't know how you guys can judge amps that get digitized by UA-cam and then play thru your computer speakers? You've got to do live comparisons. Am I missing something here?

The Code was impressive on the heavy stuff. The Fender was the worst.

I like the Marshall it’s just cleaner.
After using the GT 40 for a while I must admit that the speakers & housing is a pretty darn bad design for sound projection, EQ settings tend to improve stuff quite a bit. Tho since i use headphones like 80% of the time for practice I'd say for that purpose it's a pretty damn impressive practice amp for that kind of money.
Blackstar sounded better overall to my ears but all the amps were nice..I own a Blackstar TVP ID260 2x12 amp and its amazing...The Fender Mustang series amps are good and should be noted that although they have a muddy overdrive sound out of the box you can get some serious metal tone from them if you take a little time and dial in everything with all those options and effects they come with...I use to have a Fender Mustang III V.2 amp and I dialed into everything from Disturbed to Slayer to Killswitch Engaged...
I have both a Marshall code 100 combo and a Fender gt 40. I must say I prefer the smaller Fender over the Marshall. For some reason, I just don't succeed to dial in a proper tone with the Marshall. It keeps having a nasty trebly sound, even with the treble and presence dialed all the way back. As for my favorite modeling amp, it's still the old Roland Cube 80. Perhaps not as digital as the others, but what a sound and so easy to dial in.

My 50 watt Code will crush all of these. Can’t use the stock presets though they suck

Thats if you record it with a mic but the Blackstar has a direct and pure sound with the usb cable to record on a computer but I guess mic recordings make any amp sounds odd

Eu tb gostei mais do code, agora o som clean do fender bate nos dois, blackstar e o code, mas no todo o code foi o melhor.
The Mustang has nice "cleans"...but most other stuff sounded like there were 2 large pillows covering the speakers :(
The Marshall has good cleans and crunch...great for classic rock styles.
The Core ID has good cleans, crunches and is stereo...it can also be powered from a battery...good for playing on the streets and in the woods :)...even the improved V3 40 watt is under $200 USD so I'm going with the Blackstar ...Thanks !

lior danielov I'd say the Blackstar... one of the bigger versions would be best for metal. The Fender has some great heavy rock tones, also some metal sounds - the stock presets are a bit "metal zone" sounding but with tweaking can be perfectly decent.

My ears tell me the Marshall is what I prefer.... That must be why I like my CODE50 so much. The Fender didn't sound bad though... although I must admit, I prefer clean sounds over all else. The Blackstar just didn't sound as good as the other two. I hear a lot about the Boss Katana! I guess I'm going to have to go check one out for real and see what I think....

Disposable Hero It depends on what flavour of old school metal you're after. If you're after an Iron Maiden tone the Marshall will do you well with its JCM800 preamp. If you're after a Metallica style sound or more of an "American" sound, the Blackstar is good for that and surprisingly the Fender has some good high gain sounds in it.
The Code is the best choice I think. You can find tons of presets here:

On the Fender Mustang your using the Twin Reverb amp, this probably one of the least overdrive or distortion amps Fender makes, it is an Ultra Clean amp, surprised your getting overdrive and distortion out of it, it would have been better to select a different Fender amp to overdrive, like a Fender Super Sonic

get the spark and connect it with the full package of bias amp and effects....you will have every amp and effect you can possibly dream of...all you need after that is some manual pedals like ping pong
Are you sure by what you meant "mic'-ed up" ? .. Because I really think it doesn't sound like an amp mic'd up... it sounds more like a camera mic or some kind of mic from portable recorder. No offense I'm just saying my opinion.
pretty cool...I thought the Code and the Fender were the top 2....thought Blackstar was ass until the Distortion where the Code won... 2nd was the Blackstar and then the Fender....

I was expecting to like the Fender best before I started. I was wrong. The Marshall was best, followed by the Blackstar, then a distant 3rd the Fender. The Fender just sounded dark and muddy, not at all what I expected. Obviously everything is subjective, but to my taste, the Fender would be OK as a DI unit but not with a speaker.
