- Mario has one of the most recognizable and distinct art styles in the gaming industry, but not a whole lot of us are familiar with the people who gave Mario this iconic style in the first place. Here's a video telling you all about them!

Oh how i long for a Mario Game that emulates this artstyle
That would be amazing!
Mario Wonder gets pretty close. It’s charming and mimics the illustration style.
Imagine a superstar saga remake with the same art style
I come from the future, there's a game called Mario Wonder where they replicate Mario's 2D artstyle.
@@TallerdelGatowtf? The style is totally nothing like this
wtf I never knew that Kotabe left Nintendo and it was some amazing Nakaue this whole time
Neither did I! Go figure.
@@MarcLovallo I actually like DK’s old design proposed by Miyamoto for DKC. It’s a good thing Kotabe is like “Better not put this thing to waste, I’ll draw him for four games”, and he did, and the “Classic-Modern” Hybrid of DK remains my favorite design to this very day.
A Mario artist used to be in the anime industry? Cool. I seriously love the Super Mario 2D art. Now, that I know about these guys, I really appreciate the artwork they created.
Both of the art styles Kotabe and Nakaue look similar to retro Japanese anime and manga art styles from the 1950s-1970s seen in media like Astro Boy, Doraemon, and various Toei anime films among others which all of styles are in turn are Disney influenced
I wouldn’t say “all” are Disney-influenced. Tezuka was known for being a fanboy of Disney, but Otsuka, Takahata, Miyazaki were all anti-Disney in numerous aspects. Russian, French animations played a major role as well as traditional old school manga.
Some of the major manga/anime we see today are also the result of being “rebellious” against traditional Tezuka style manga/anime, which is fine, since it brings a new wind to the industry.
One main difference between former Toei/Nintendo/Ghibli-related animators (Ikeda/Otsuka/Takahata/Kotabe/Miyazaki/...etc.) and other typical “anime” is that they value movement, which is more prevalent in Western animations.
Looks like Kotabe has larger heads while Nakaue is more proportional, but that’s only side by side.
Be hard to tell on its own.
I do wish we could have a 2D Mario game using these drawings like Cuphead or Rayman Origins
Optitron98 Hence why some people had a perception on why Nakaue’s art is viewed as modern versions of Kotabe’s but yet people don’t have that issue when Uekawa redesigned Oshima’s classic Sonic look to make his limbs longer to the point where he got green eyes, darker color scheme, and a different 2D art style to go with it for modern games starting with Adventure and did the same for the rest of cast with some getting entirely new looks like Eggman wearing goggles and jacket instead of some sort of suit and Amy gaining a red dress and new hairdo plus green eyes instead of a green dress and Sonic hairdo
this gent just casually dropped one of the best Mario impression's i've heard
Ah, Mr. Nakaue (I might have misspelled that) is responsible for the modern 2D Mario art. Nice!
I enjoy Nakaue's art in Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, and especially Mario Party: Star Rush. He makes the crew so expressive! He's a great successor to Mr. Kotabe.
I have my own style of drawing Mario in 2D, but the official artwork is always pretty. Nice video.
You spelled it correctly though. But I concurred that Mr. Nakaue's art style have a lot of charm in it.
Excellent video, Marc!
If I had to describe Mario’s art style in one word, I would either use warm or inviting. I’ve read that Miyamoto always wanted Mario to bring joy to people and be flexible in the same way that Mickey Mouse has always been, and thanks to the wonderful art of this series, I would have to believe that this wish has been fulfilled.
I was not exactly well-versed in Mario art prior to this video, but the work that Nakaue has done to retain Kotabe’s original designs is pretty amazing. I really couldn’t picture Peach and Bowser without their iconic designs, so much credit is due to Kotabe for stepping in to perfect them. Plus, I absolutely adored the Peach letters in my first playthrough of 3D World, so extra props to Nakaue as well! I’ll be sure to check out Kotabe’s art book when I get the chance.
Its nice to see a topic on nintendo I never know much about, especially the art because I always wonder how its so good.
Fun Fact: Takahata and Miyazaki founded the well-known anime movies studio STUDIO GHIBLI
I have to admit! Kotabe's art got me curious for Super Mario long time ago, when I saw a Mario icon in a magazine.
The Nakaue story has always been super interesting to me, and for awhile I've been developing theories. I haven't done too much research, so I might be wrong, but I believe Nakaue's first game doing promo art was Mario Party Advance. And if you compare the art from that game to Nakaue's other works, it definitely feels like the case.
The art feels quite rough to me, but you can tell that he's getting a good feel of the artstyle and putting it to use well.
Looking at his art over the years, you can really see his style change into something that feels a bit more of his own. It was already characterized by more proportional, on-model artwork that sometimes tends to feel a bit stiff in how proper it looks. But around the 2010s, he started taking more influence from Kotabe's classic designs. Many character designs became a lot more classic looking-- notably Yoshi and DK. Poses became a lot more dynamic and fun, and expressions became a lot more exciting as well.
This is not to say his 2000s art is bad, but everything he's made in the past 10 or so years has just been phenomenal, and I'm in love with it. Every time we see a new art piece of his, I get super excited. Kotabe is a legend, and did so much in terms of cementing the Mario artstyle, and many character designs. But Nakaue has continued the soul of 2D Mario alive and pushed it more than it ever has been pushed before.
In some of Kotabe's later works, with stuff like the Game & Watch Gallery games, everything looks a little off. It's not bad, but it's certainly different than what came before it. It's such an interesting transitional period, where Nakaue was first starting out, and Kotabe was about to stop. All that is a fantastic history that has led up to where we are now.
Your Mario tv show vid is the reason i subbed and this vid is the reason I will stay subbed for a long time
Panda and the Magic Serpent is the first Japanese animated feature film in color as well the first Japanese animated film released in the united states.
Grew up loving Kotabe's Mario art. I had experimented with and had taught myself how to emulate it myself. It is a fun and satisfying style.
This is perhaps one of your best videos! Please give us more like this
Awesome video!
This is a great video can't wait to see more
Binging your content. Really good
It would be really awesome if they make a game and used this 2D art style and animation!
Love the vid! I've been doing research on this myself because I've been also trying to recreate the art style!
It would be awesome if you could make a video about the other Nintendo art styles because those are also very well loved!
It would be cool, but it would probably take a while for everyone to get used to a game with that style.
Nakaue makes 2D renders based on Kotabe's traditional Mario artstyle
Isao Takahata wasn't an animator at Toei, he was a director and storyboarder.
In regards to how Box Art was drawn back then before Photoshop, was a lot of it done on Animation Cels or a Computer Program? If you guys haven't seen them already, Kotabe specializes in Watercolors and has done a lot for PreStudio Ghibli films like Heidi and 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother!
Oop
How the heck am i this early?
It says 17 hours till permire.
Oof
Any chance of a link that works about the katabe works?
💜
Sorry that coppa did to your video about the super mario cartoon.
First
Why the hell your SM64DS video is marked as for kids
Because...it is?
@@MarcLovallo but this doesn't let anyone comment and not only kids watch it. Kids are interested by Mario, but they don't like watching reviews. It's a video for everyone but mostly for teenagers and adults. So you shouldn't comply to UA-cam horrible COPPA design.
