Attaching a deck to a John Deere 318 322 332 316

  • This is how I attach a deck to my John Deere 318. This would be the same for a 316 (Onan powered), 322, 330, and 332 garden tractor. The same principles with slightly different draft arms applies to the early 300 series like the 300, 314, 316, 317 and the 140. The principle is the same for the 46 inch, 50 inch and the 48 inch replacement decks.

    Great video. Straight and to the point. JD 318 owner here as well, and was a great reference. Great explanation on the "why" and how to avoid pitfalls. I always enjoy people showing their method on how they do something, because when you think you know everything, is when you stop learning. Subscribed!

    I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video. You went through everything that a new owner would need to know! I just bought a 316 and was looking for videos on removing and reinstalling the deck… you’d is by far the very best I’ve found! Thank you. I appreciate you explaining things simply and thoroughly! Thanks for taking the time to go back and showing/how the belt should be routed over the metal bar on the mule drive so we would go through belts!

    I have had my 317s for over 30 years now. I only use JD belts. As a result (and I am 65 years old now...), I only change a belt about every 5-8 years as I take care of my tractors. Unfortunately, I forget what I learned the last time I did it and have to start all over again. Your video really helped as I let a PTO belt get too loose, it jump and got wedged. Gitting it unwedged took a chunk out and it broke within a minute of being reinstalled. After installing the new belt, I double-checked and sure enough, I had the belt over that square shaft you warn about in the end in the garage. I did that once about 20 years ago and killed a brand new belt. Not this time! Thanks so much for the help. I really appreciate it!

      The analogy I like to use is not everyone is born knowing how to tie their shoes. Good for you knowing how to put on a mower deck when you were 13, some folks didn't have that opportunity to learn that skill at 13 and maybe not even 30 or 40.

I sold for $2500 with deck & plow. I notice all the hydraulic lines on the engine looked dry rotted & OEM fuel lines in the tank waiting to crumble. Also, the water pump started to leak. I'm not sure how much hydraulic fluid think someone say there is a sight glass in the rear? i can't lift the blade possible air & low hydraulic fluid. I love this tractor they don't make them like this anymore.

      There is a sight glass that should be on the back of the machine. There is a fitting on the very back of the differential and then on the right side of the differential (looking from the back). A hose should go between these fittings and be routed to the right side of the rear frame in a sight glass. Congrats on the 332!

    And best to throttle down to just above idle when shutting off deck to keep belt from jumping off pullyies and ruining belt next time you engage them.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 роки тому

      If a belt is jumping off pulleys something is not in proper alignment and should be investigated further. I think one of the most neglected areas of mowers is the deck and deck pulleys. Small amounts of wear can be amplified when you start and stop a deck, regardless of speed. The larger the deck the more apparent the issue becomes. For example on my larger 72" deck a 1/4" of the tension adjustment bolt will results in the belt going from extremely loose and oscillating during use to being properly tensioned and smooth running.

    I have a deck for my recently obtained 318 but so far have only studied how to install it (it didn't come installed because it was snow season and the blower was on it) I have watched this video several times and have to conclude that the deck does not get moved up and down via the hydraulics but rather just rides on the four wheels at all times. I cannot see any connections or any way the "mule drive" can raise or lower the deck. Have I got this right?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  7 років тому

      The deck should lift with the hydraulics on the tractor. The gauge wheels should never ride on the ground (they should be 1/4-1/2 inch off the ground). There are arms under the tractor that lift the deck. All total there are the two pins for the mule drive, two draft arms, and two lift arms to attach the deck to the tractor. Hope that helps some.

    What is the spec on the tension arm stop plate on deck?

  • @scottbrock8741
    @scottbrock8741 5 років тому

    I just got a 318 from my Dad. He bought it used and never used it (still driving his old 317.) I am hooking up the mower deck for the first time. The arm that should lift the deck is not engaged to the rear hydraulic piston. The pin that looks like it should be a solid attachment to the rocker arm is sliding in the rocker arm. Wondering what I should do to properly attach the piston to that arm. Looking through manuals but not making headway.Hope this question makes sense. Any hint would be appreciated.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  5 років тому

      Hmmmm I think the lift rod is not connected to the rear rock shaft? I'd need to see some pictures to get a good shot at getting it right. At the 3:20 mark where he shows us the wear point in the deck hangers there's one good, easy fix to that either to fix it or avoid the wear in the first place. And that's to use a stout steel washer under the bolt head. Should have been one there probably all along.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  6 років тому

      That is a good suggestion. I have those type washers installed on my normal every day mowers. It cuts down on the wear substantially. From what I have seen there are some washers on some models but not on others. (OEM spec at least.)

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  6 років тому

      Thanks! The deck should hang on the tractor with the wheels 1/4 to 1/2 inch off the ground. The wheels are only there to prevent scalping. Deck drive belt number would be : M82718 for the 318, 317, and the 316 Onan powered machines. M89112 for the 330, 322, and 332 units and M45254 for the 120, 140, 314, 316 (closed frame).

      Two belts, one for the mule drive that transfers power from the PTO on the front of the engine to the drive sheave on the deck. The second belt is the deck belt that goes around the three spindles and idler/tension pulley. Hopefully that makes sense.

    Is there a video that shows how to install a JD snow thrower onto the JD 318?

      +Larry Baran Here is an OK video I made a long time ago for putting the blade on. You can use this same principle for the snow blower. Take the grill off and then you can install the belt. The hardest part about installing the belt is the tensioner pulley is very tight. Hope that helps some. ua-cam.com/video/styaMpuH3N8/v-deo.html

    What size belt do you use?

      The belts are different across the tractors and across the decks. Which deck/tractor combo do you need a belt for?

      mmrbeef any idea on what belt I’d need for a 314 with a 46” deck?

    How do you convert to electronic ignition?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  8 років тому +1

      You will need to swap out the flywheel and the coil. I would recommend keeping the points if you can. The electronic ignition parts are expensive.

    Love you content. As someone with a 332 and a Buford Bucket, what happened to doing more videos?

      The Buford bucket was sold. I had some many people interested in it it was hard to justify keeping around.

      I can certainly add it to the list. It might be a while before I am able to get to it. If you have some time join a forum like mytractorforum.com and ask some questions. The folks on the forums are very helpful.

    You did not show the actual putting the belt over the mule drive pulley. Mine is always very tight and the hardest part of the total installation, so that was not of any help. Nevertheless, a very nice video and thank you.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  5 років тому

      If it is extremely tight only two thoughts come to mind. Do you have the exact belt from Deere? Deere belts are funky lengths (1/4 and 1/2 inch lengths). Also is there something blocking the tension mechanism on the mule drive from releasing all the way. While it is not the easiest thing to do putting the belt on the PTO should only require a few lbs of force.

      @@mmrbeef Hey, even though 3 years have passed, the belt (Deere purchased) still is difficult for me but I will check again about the tension mechanism. Your video is very clear and I appreciate it.
      On a different issue, my non Deere mechanic put a crank trigger on the original P218 from 1987 without discussing it with me. Do you have any thoughts about that for my engine. I see they are for high performance engines. Thank you for your answers.
