Being caught passing a forged signature of Charles Lindbergh as authentic by Lindbergh's daughter set off a chain of re-authentication of hundreds of signatures he declared real a great many turned up forgeries losing the owners hundreds of thousands of dollars collectively. In 2011 they grouped together to file suit against him. During a deposition it came out his education (he'd always claimed to have been educated at the Columbia school of journalism, he attended briefly but never graduated)to evaluate signatures was also fake. And he admitted he learned from Bill Mastro, who is serving his own prison sentence for memorabilia fraud.

Mike Cuba What if it’s only worth $100? Then Rick has spent an extra $200 and has to keep it for a while trying to sell it. I think Rick made a good decision calling in the expert since he now has an idea of what it’s worth with less risk than giving $300 without knowing much about the worth of the item. (He also still makes a profit after calling in the expert)
