Sort of, I think when Austin started coaching Alan is when it really happened because that's when Alan started getting results again and they speak for themselves.
Hello All you shouldn’t be thinking about RPE mid-set, it should be retrospective immediately after the set. And a RPE 9 shouldn’t be “I could probably grind out one more rep” - it should be “I could confidently do one more rep”
How about rip sticks to doing another version of starting strength instead talking bullshit about global warming. I loved starting strength but as a physicist I have to say stfu rip and good move from Dr. B. Chapeau.
Very doubtful. Dr. Baraki isn't a pussy, and will listen to opinions even if he doesn't agree with them. I don't know whether he agrees or disagrees, but he would listen regardless.
Man this video aged like milk. Alan Thrall asking the question, Baraki sitting up there (and subsequently leaving when the topic went off the rails). This is a good laugh in retrospect.
Asking Rippetoe to admit climate change would be like asking him to support universal health care. Each posits a level of social responsibility that is alien to his individualistic social model. People have the values they have and they find the facts that fit those values.
Each posits a level of accepting lies he is too smart to fall for. Sadly most people are either stupid or simply gullible and cannot understand how often people lie for gain in this world.
To falsify the hypothesis of human caused climate change I would require that you analyse the atmosphere using precisely calibrated and accurate measurement tools, and report that the CO2 atmospheric concentration and other greenhouse gases are continuing to rise year on year but the average temperature of the oceans has not risen over the same period of time, that the ice sheets in the Arctic/ Antarctica have at least retained their ice sheet thickness and thus their surface area. All scientific analyse conducted over the past 50 years does not show this. It shows the opposite. For your comment that the climate models are wrong, actual climate models of the past 30 years have actually under represented the rate of ice melting and sea level rise in response to the increase in global temperatures. Now this is very clear Rip. What you fail to grasp about your 4.5 billion years of atmospheric [CO2] point is that while the relative values of [CO2] have wildly fluctuated and have indeed been higher in the past to what they are now, what the data now tells us is that the rate of change of [CO2] is vastly higher than what is what is the past. You are fond of the definition of power: force/time. The shorter the time that you can produce the same force the greater the power. I would like you to apply this to climate change. It is the rate of increase of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere that we need to be concerned about. Further perhaps this link about sea level rise might be of interest: skepticalscience.com/sea-level-rise-intermediate.htm One last point. There is a huge causal link between the CO2 gas and a temperature increase. The molecular bonds in the CO2 molecule by its very nature can absorb wavelengths of light in the infrared spectrum. This is the same wavelength of light that is emitted as heat from the ground. It is the asymmetric oscillation of the CO2 molecule which actively absorbs light of the wavelength 4.26 um. You will find that this wavelength of light corresponds to the infrared section. Fundamentally, CO2 absorbs the heat that is being emitted from the surface of the earth and thus prevents this heat to escape our atmosphere. The UV light that heats of planet from the sun is not blocked by CO2 as UV light oscillates at an entirely different wavelength and thus is not absorbed by CO2. This process is extremely well understood and is quantifiable under the rigorous laws of quantum mechanics which, to this date, is the most accurate model ever created by humans. I write this because a central tenant of your training philosophy, Rip, is training in a quantifiable sound way from exercise execution to programming. From what I have read of your work you want things to be done in the most efficient and effective manner. Your climate change remarks are analogous to teaching the dead lift pull while the bar is 2 feet in front of the shins. Not exactly the most efficient movement pattern. We both agree that authority should not be listened to, the majority should not be believed just because they are the majority. Scientific truth inherently means that some parameter is quantifiable, there is an experiment to conduct, data to analyse and I believe that the populace's mistrust of climate science is that they have no real grasp of how to conduct their own scientific inquiry. Overall this problem is very serious and real because no matter what we do from now, from absolutely now, atmospheric [CO2] will remain at this level for hundreds of years. Tomorrow if no fossil fuels are burnt then the [CO2] will just stay the same, this increased temperature of the planet will not continue to rise but it will still be elevated compared to pre-industrialized levels. As such the frequency of chaotic weather patterns will continue. What was once a 1 in a 500 year storm will occur 1 ever 20 years and so on. What we have to prevent is the runaway greenhouse effect. There comes a tipping point where the boiler cannot be turned off unless we can manipulate the atmosphere through some new shockingly powerful technology. On Venus there is the runaway greenhouse effect. The surface temperature is hot enough for solid lead to become liquid. We do not want this to happen to Earth. I hope that a healthy interrogation of the facts will yield an interesting discussion. I enjoy your podcast and channel a great deal
When it comes to RPE, (please correct me if I am wrong) it's not a question of perception. It's a matter of bar speed/movement, a matter of bar performance. This is how you gauge yourself with RPE style training. How fast the bar is moving and how well your technique is with the weight you're using. I have never liked the the name 'Rate of Perceived Exertion' for one is highly misleading with the perception part because this makes it sound as though its all about how the weight feels. Whereas with RPE the focus is not at all about how it feels in your hands or on your back. It's about how the bar moves, the bar speed/velocity. Slower the bar velocity, the higher the RPE and visa versa. It's about an assessment of your performance, not how heavy or how much pressure you feel when you pick it up. It's about how you perform, not how you feel. More of a concept within a framework than a framework within itself. RPE is to manage intensity and fatigue percentages is for managing volume. Train to the appropriate amount of stress and forget concerns about volume. Secondly, it just has a terrible egghead ring to it which scares most people away to begin with. I prefer to refer to this style of training as BMP (Bar Movement Performance) training. Please share your thoughts on this, I would very much so appreciate some help with this topic, thanks.
Well the issue with basing it solely on bar movement is that people have different rates of explosiveness with which they can move the bar. While for the squat and pressing movements this still correlates pretty well, for something like the deadlift, there can be a dramatic difference between individuals in terms of their bar speed relative to their ability to keep reps going. There are folks who can just grip it and rip it super fast on every rep, but even though they get a super fast movement on the 5th rep, they go for the 6th and the bar doesn't even budge. So even though the bar moved fast and smooth on the 5th rep, it actually was still an RPE 9.5 or 10 because the person was spent. Meanwhile, you have guys who grind it out like crazy on rep 3, but they can keep it going all the way up to rep 6 while maintaining good form. Most people aren't on these two extremes, but it's still worth keeping in mind. Like I'm more the former than the latter. My deadlifts explode off the floor and lock out pretty quick, but then suddenly I can't even get the bar to move at all. But I know that about myself now, and I learned it pretty quickly. So while bar speed is very useful, it shouldn't be everything. People will learn where on that sort of spectrum they fall with practice.
I mean I know a lot about certain tech concepts, but nothing about materials production, and those are way more closely related than human physiology and climate change. Although the difference is I don't pretend to know more about stuff than I do.
I love Rip but I disagree on RPE. I don't think it takes that long to learn how many reps you have left in the tank. As Rip points out, there is a difference between how a rep feels overall, versus how close I am to failing it, and you quickly learn how to differentiate them. Figuring out your RPE 10 and 9 is fairly easy, RPE 8 takes a couple of weeks, RPE 7 another few weeks, and those are the ones that really matter. Occasionally you will test your perception to fine tune it. Sometimes, on my last set, let's say it was supposed to be RPE 8, I will continue to exhaustion, to test how accurate was my prediction. People are not THAT stupid.
Yeah RPE is honestly not that complicated after the first few times. Maybe if you do something like the novice LP first, where you're doing very heavy sets of FAHVE for a while, then switch to an RPE program, you'll already know by that point what it feels like to hit or even fail at a super tough set, and you can use that experience in an RPE-based program. Of course, it does also help if you have a coach who can judge your bar speed and form, but I found that even just recording myself and comparing how I felt to what the speed and form on the recording was like will help me judge if my RPE assessment was accurate or not, since bar speed can contribute a lot to judging RPE.
I'm not going to take a stance one way or the other on global warming, but I'm just curious: does anyone out there who believes in global warming have an example of what data could be presented to falsify your believe? Rip does have a good point that to make a scientific claim it has to be falsifiable. So if you don't have a response to that, you really should consider if your belief is actually just based on politics. This goes both ways. If you don't believe in global warming, do you have an example of what data could be presented to you that would falsify your belief? Once again, if not, then you probably don't have a viewpoint based on science, but rather your viewpoint is based on politics. What should you do if you realize your viewpoint is purely a construct of your political alignment and your social environment? Either educate yourself and form a scientific opinion, OR just admit you don't know. Nothing wrong with being honest.
You could present data that shows cooling trends, ice caps growing and the sea level falling. Unfortunately for any wanting to hold to Rip's views the climate has been warming for at least 10,000 years. That's how the last ice age ended and the resulting ice melt raised the sea levels. The question isn't is global warming happening, it's has human contributions to environment degregation either 1) increased the rate of warming, and/or 2) thrown the natural balance out of cycle preventing another ice age? I think there are valid questions regarding global warming, but when you actually start presenting data and findings to skeptics they will more often than not start to put their tin foil hat on, (And Rip has an impressive tin foil hat) and by the end of the conversation they are trying to convince you that every single nation on earth, many of whom are enemies, are all working together to fool you into thinking that the earth is warming when it isn't. If this was true it would be the greatest joint endeavor of human governments of all time. Imagine Rip pontificating about how he thought the theory of relativity was wrong and that the big bang is a religion. No sensible person would give him the time of day. So why do we listen to any normal Joe pontificating about climate change? Because it affects us directly. Relativity means little to our daily lives, but if we are indeed warming the planet at the rates scientists say we are, then we should do something about it. That means making personal change. It may mean personal sacrifices of some luxuries, and if there is one thing humans do not like sacrificing it's their personal luxuries. So we will lend our ear to someone who's view largely aligns with ours. An interesting thing I note is that a lot of religious people call global warming a religion because it's wrong, but people believe it 'religiously'. Should I take that to mean that all religions are wrong? I'm not sure why people use this term. At it's worst it's a flawed scientific theory that some have taken to form an ideology that guides their actions. That's not the same as a religion, and anyone (Maybe Rip?) who thinks they are the same simply don't understand the terms.
I'm just going to say that global warming and its causes are a "political" debate almost exclusively in USA. Why? $$$ and the uncontrollable desire to stay in the top
He was already getting ready to peace out during Rip's RPE discussion. When that question came through, he finally went "Yeah I need to get out of here or else I'm gonna end up throwing Rip out the window."
Apparently being a strength coach qualifies you to speak with authority on a wide range of topics. Including politics and climate science! I wonder why that guy even asked.
@@SixGorillion ...and yet he is not a climate scientist nor a practicing geologist. Just because you got a degree once, doesn't make you a professional in that area. A degree is just the entry fee to begin learning the first thing about your area of specialty and you really don't know anything until you've actually held the position for several years.
@@patryuji and there are "climate scientist" and "practicing geologist" who disagree with each other. I'm with the history book that has never been PROVEN wrong one time, never...the bible. And it is definitely NOT climate that will destroy this earth. God has reserved that pleasure unto himself 😁
He is right about one thing, "thousands of climate scientists" is not data. In fact, it's a combination of argumentum ad populum and appeal to authority. In other words, appealing to the authority of popular opinion within the scientific community. It's logical fallacy in debate. I have no comment on whether he's right or not about man made climate change btw.
Bravo! There is also this notion that this is something to accept and then everyone is on the same page. The whole secret to the mania is that this is a complex topic being sold as something simple: Let's say CO2 levels rising is causing the temperature to increase, and climate to change. Well, then you need to work out exactly what is bad about it, and whether or not you can do something about it and what you should not do something about. Then you need to work out how what you decide to do about it affects not only the climate, but how it affects humans and our behavior and see if not making some country lay off it's resources will cause unrest because of poverty, and thus again if it will cause a new more fierce battle for resources, that in turn makes a new host of issues arise. Funny example of an attempt to save the environment here where I am from: a tourist cabin at the top of a mountain here used a little propane burner for making waffles and selling them. Then they installed expensive solar driven machines instead, that had to be carried up by helicopter, and the engineers had to set it up, and they needed to chopper up another one with engineers and all. To save the environment! It's hilarious!
Funny how the scientific method generally goes unchallenged in every context-biochemistry, astrophysics, advanced technology-except the two fields that have implications for highly politicized public discourses: climate science and evolutionary biology. Do you find the theory of gravity to also be an example of fallacy masquerading as legitimate science?
Appealing to authority is a logical fallacy when you refer to someone/thing that isn't an expert in the field in question, e.g. Albert Einstein says sumo squats build more muscle than conventional. If you actually see that the people who have spent their entire professional and academic lives studying a particular issue and virtually all agree on some point, then appealing to their opinion as an authority is not a fallacy.
True, thousands of scientists do not always a consensus make in the abstract. But when 100% of peer reviewed papers in the last 10 years support the thesis and a 99% consensus of ALL climate experts tells you something, I would NOT take the opinion of a weight training coach in preference. And which group is more likely to be motivated by money: 99% of all climate scientists or the petrochemical industry? It just cracks me up when Rip says the scientists are all on the take, like the petrochemical industry is a charity! Idiocy. Sheer idiocy. How much do you wanna bet RIp was pro Big Tobacco back in the day? "No proof it causes cancer! All those scientists are just tryin' to make money!". Stick to the powerlifting.
Rip is dead wrong on his opinions on conditioning for battle. I've been to combat, I've been in firefights, you do need to be able to operate at a high-level of intensity for upwards of 15 to 20 minutes. Whether your Army or Marine Corps you should be able to complete your run requirement in 12 to 20 minutes. The running requirements in the PT test do simulate The ability to operate at a high intensity for a duration of time. If you can't do that, I don't want to fight with you.
Alex T Alex T there is a level if conditioning that comes with performing the barbell movements. But it is not the same as being able to operate at high intensity "run fast" for 15-20 minutes without being so gassed you can't think straight. You do have to run in modern warfare. Sometimes pre, during, and post firefight....on very minimal sleep. Strength is very important too, but it's not the pinnacle of battle readiness. If Rip trained to fight and actually fought then he would know that. The fact that he's so sure about something he's never done is concerning. Rip doesnt run and doesnt want to thus he thinks no one else should. If you cant run HARD for 15 minutes, you are not fit to be a soldier and we"re better off without you. Besides, if you cant deadlift 405 AND figure out a way to run 2 miles in 15 minutes...youre not strong at all
@@Alexander_Tronstad Bullshit. It is immediately obvious to me that you have no experience of infantry combat whatsoever. If you think the army ALWAYS drives to battle you are ignorant and if you think there is no requirement for cardiovascular endurance you are a fool. And SS is a VERY POOR system for gaining cardio vascular endurance. It is designed for maximising your 1RM , period. That does help, but trust me, 99.9% of the time the modern soldier does not benefit from being able to deadlift 1000lbs more than he does being able to run for several miles with a moderate load on his back. This is self evident.
@Fabio Q - that's ok. It's also immediately clear that you have no experience in strength training. But why are we arguing? The point is that soldiers need to be prepared to fight. So they trian. Some better than others. But Rip's main point is that wars are no longer won on a battlefield of hand-to-hand combat that we have to march (or run) to. We have advanced weapons we like to play with. A fat guy can fly a drone from half way around the world. So a 5 mile time is not AS relevant as it used to be.
Even if our carbon emissions aren't changing the climate ask yourself this. Do you want to breathe in all that crap? That's why reducing our carbon footprint is important.
Where was all that carbon before it was trapped in the layers of millions of years of organic material growing and dying and being buried by more trees and carbon based life
I own many books by Rip and like his content and attitude. Him discussing politics is harmful to his reputation. Why bring it up in this forum? It is not conducive to strength training.
@Eugene Stoner Who suggested infringing upon his first amendment rights? It was merely a statement about how unwise it is for Rippetoe to attempt to expound upon subjects that he is clearly not qualified to discuss with any kind of legitimacy-especially in the context of a forum on a completely unrelated topic. No one wants to restrict his right to speak freely on these subjects; if he wants to publicize his ignorance of well-established science and the scientific method in general, he should feel free to do so, and he is.
I don't need formal qualifications to recognize that he is talking out of his depth on this matter; anyone with basic reasoning and critical thinking ability would see that he resorted to misinterpretations, straw man fallacies and a not-so-subtle appeal to authority (casually mentioning his geology degree to bolster the legitimacy of his claim) in an attempt to refute the claims of professionals who do in fact have credentials in this field. The point isn't whether or not I am qualified to determine his suitability to make claims on this topic; it's that he IS NOT qualified to dispute the work of climate scientists who use the same methods of analysis and peer review as those used in every other field of science that we rely upon in our daily lives. I am happy to admit that I don't have any credentials in this field, because I can defer to the scientists who do. Had he disputed the theory of evolution, would I need to have published a dissertation on evolutionary biology to point out how wrong he is to make such a claim?
I love Starting strength but got bummed out by rips opinion on global warming. did he even suggested that saturated fat does not cause cholesterol or heart problems? I think we need to consider what scientific consensus means and does.
@Becoming Godsize A Bsc in Geology trumps a 99% consensus of all climate scientists? Interesting. I especially like how Rip simultaneously tells people to ignore ALL scientists and yet brandishes his BSc in Geology at the same time as an appeal to authority. We call that cognitive dissonance where I come from. It's pretty clear you have no idea what you are talking about Sir.
@Becoming Godsize WHat has that got to do with the 99% consensus? Do you REALLY think every qualified scientist is unaware of the data? Are you seriously saying that the existence of billions of years of the earth's existence has any bearing on this? So we should just ignore any data that is younger than the date of the big bang? Huh???
@Becoming Godsize Not quite. They are paid to produce and ANALYSE data. I assume you also expect to get paid for your work? Why shouldnt they. What you have to ask yourself is why would they not try to get paid by the richest industry on the planet (petrochemicals) instead? Why do 99.9% of them choose not to? Does that not make you at least question your line of argument? Or are you saying they is more money to be made pushing climate change than backing the oil and gas industry? If so, where do you get your evidence. This is assuming your idea that it is all a money making exercise is true. Which it isn't.
The contrarian that is Rip brings up some great points. RPE is very useful, but only if you're honest and you have some safeguards in place. Rip's theatricality aside, you'll think some.
Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum and Dr. Austin Baraki from Barbell Medicine (Starting Strength coaches as well, still, I think?) have late novices / early intermediates with a few months of training experience jump on their intermediate program ('The Bridge'), which is solely based on the RPE scale without using any percentages. Does that make their program suboptimal for an early intermediate (I am one) then? They're also saying the Texas Method is pretty much crap, even if set up as a 4 day version with 2 upper/2 lower days as described in PPST (3rd ed.) which fixes a lot of the issues people have with stock TM (not enough pulling volume, not enough upper body volume etc.) I don't know what to believe any more actually :D
Karti Loco Same here man, both starting strength and barbell medicine seem to be credible sources yet both disagree fundamentally about rpe usage and intermediate training. I just wanna get stronger the most efficient way possible without wasting time.
@Hello All I guess SS is for people who can't think for themselves then. It takes 1-2 months max to get proficient in RPE. I did the bridge after LP and it not only went awesome, it taught me more in those 8 weeks about lifting and myself than the whole year of doing SSLP and studying everything Rip has released. The more I research and experience health and fitness the more I realize Rip is wrong and his programming is based on false premises. It seems you fundamentally misunderstand RPE and BBM style training. It not only works it is far and away superior to SS programming. Your statement "Did RPE 10 all the time..." shows you failed at the very basics of RPE training, so I do not think it is fair to judge the program the way you have.
@Hello All That's good to hear! I'm glad you stuck with it. I also overshot RPE a lot with the bridge 1.0, but after running 1 or 2 more templates I got it dialed-in, now several templates later RPE is second nature. I think Rip's bias is clear here. If it is not the SS method (or doesn't align with his views) he just bashes it.
BBM is the way to go after your LP. RPE is not that hard to figure out. You will progress with RPE. You will stall pretty quick with SS methodology unless you are on steroids. For the normal lifter, RPE is the way to go and BBM is the best IMO
@Hello All The duality of man, indeed! What caused you to change your mindset? Was it just practicing it more? Were you seeing a reduction in injury rates RPE when you got used to it? I'm really curious to hear how you went from absolutely hating RPE to being a big fan, and if that's still the case.
Coach Rip - not only have you provided the only physical improvement model based on reality - you apply your no nonsense approach to rest of life. Including the current sacred cow of agw. Your humor is always appreciated.
I've read Starting Strength, Practical Programming (and even the related Barbell Prescription) cover to cover and have filled them with notes. I'm grateful to Rip for his perspective on training and his Novice stage linear programming. But Rip's perspective on climate change makes me stop and think. If Rip can answer a question about climate change using his same trademark bravado, dismissiveness and name calling, maybe he's talking out of his @ss much of the time on everything else too. Good to see Baraki, Thrall and others at Barbell Medicine break away and begin to poke at Rip's post-novice phase programming perspective.
Not saying he's right, but his response on global warming had a lot of analysis, not in any way dismissive... Now there's always a degree of bravado though.
"...sea level rising 3 millimeters every hundred years..." - that, my friends, is what you call talking out of your ass. Stick to barbell training, Rip.
Gotta agree. I'm trying to follow the Starrting Strength program to the dot and I truly believe it's legit but his take on climate change wasn't convincing at all.
Starting Strength needs to be protected from Rip. Who ever makes these videos should do some heavy handed editing when ever Rip ventures outside the topic of strenght training. Seriously Rip just sounded like some demented old drunk with his conspiracy theories.
dude check the facts. he is right about strength and he is right about climate. have u even fact checked what he said? there are physics noble prize winners who are on the same page as him, but u choose to listen to propaganda
Yes. There are climate scientists who think climate isn't affected buy human activities, it's only most of them that think that man made global warming is a real thing, not all of them. I'm sure, if you search long enough, you can find an M.D. who thinks smoking isn't really that bad for your health.
@Badger0fDeath any fucking half wit can easily debunk Rip's claims on climate change. What's interesting is that climate scientists aren't exactly hiding in the dark. A lot of the more well known ones can be messaged on FB or emailed and you'll get a response. They're not in some ivory tower working for the illuminati or some bullshit.
well if your in the Marines I guess you could just drive all day and lift all day and get a 450 deadlift and then go push through a town forever without getting tired.... mark go to the Marine corps fitness hq and talk so boldly
For any questions or if you have ideas on how to enhance the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Program, please contact: TECOM.FORCEFITNESS@USMC.MIL OR 703-784-0098
Come come, Mark has soldiers in SS. He KNOWS all about infantry doctrines. He has watched a LOT of films. Could the marines use ore strength training? Maybe. But his articles argue for ZERO endurance training. That is just so much bullshit it's laughable and probably why he is ridiculed outside his rather narrow field of expertise.
It's a pity that Rip uses his platform to spread anti-science, climate denial nonsense. It risks ruining his credibility on the training issues where he is actually correct.
"That's all, an opinion." This is a religion for these people (the alarmists). So for them, it can't just be "an opinion." You either accept their dogma or you're an evil heretic (denier).
Rusty Shackleford yeah but he bases everything else on science, why can't he look at the science of global warming? He makes the assertion that the models don't stand up to scrutiny with NO evidence to back it up. he just says it...
Think about it. A career politician, Al Gore, used this ALARMIST (Inconvenient Truth...) behavior to make his company a TON of money via scamming the living fuck out of people like PanzerKami.
Even conservatives in New Orleans have admitted that global warming is real since we're directly affected by it from worse storms every year, even more brutal summers, and more frequent/severe flooding when it rains.
I am so thankful that this video popped up when I needed it the most. I am a complete novice so obviously I can just carry on with my programming and not worry about such advanced stuff. By the way, what Mark says makes total sense. You are wasting time making a subjective assessment of exertion applied. But what truly matters is no matter how much of a grinder it was, you still made the lift. That is all the solace and consolation a powerlifter truly needs. A big thanks to you Mark from India!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S.: Please bring Starting Strength to India. Desperately needed here
I know Rip’s method for training the novice is the best because I have tried it, failed, tried again, failed, and am currently on my third try. I still find it preferential to any other strength program I can’t afford. Expert knowledge of one skill precludes expertise for any other. Rip is THE Master for Strength training. The fact he is so wrong about most other things should not be held against his mastery ❤️🤗
I would like to know what he thinks is causing a rise in global temperatures, sea levels, glacial ice melt etc. ? If not the fossil fuel consumption predicted by SVANTE ARRHENIUS (who not only noted CO2 absorbs energy from sunlight but also the the novel condition of releasing tons of CO2 per hour would cook humanity off the planet in about *3,000 years). *at 1908 levels
Mark just lost 90% of his credibility to me. Someone claiming that there is "no evidence" for CO2 influencing global warming has proven to me that he has a habit of bending scientifical evidence to match his personal opinion or agenda. Someone like that cannot authentically claim to base his practices around the objective scientifical evidence. Unsubscribed.
You do understand that there's a reason this is such a strong debate, right? Your essentially scoffing at Rip's sound argument as if you personally have discovered the evidence. Adios.
Dude's a 60 something GOP voter from TEXAS of all places. The fuck did you expect his position on climate change to be? haha Ironically this problem is also going to be solved by attrition as Rip calls it.
Well there's also a guy in the Vineyard who literally picked up his entire house and had to move it 1000 feet because the rising sea levels have been chewing away at his available property space. I've personally seen the result in person. It's pretty freaky, but it looks like someone literally took a bite out of the side of the land.
Honestly, the learning curve is part of what makes it more important to learn earlier. Jordan and Austin have shown that many times, it's not the intensity that matters but the volume, and as long as that volume is within the 70-85% range for volume work and 85-93% for the intensity practice, it will drive hypertrophy and an improvement in strength. Rip seems more concerned with PR's and learning what you can actually do though, as opposed to simply training for hypertrophy and using hypertrophic gains to boost strength. Tldr: RIP: Make PR's to drive progress. BBM: use submaximal high volume work to drive hypertrophy while improving recoverability by increasing volume and adding GPP work.
For folks interested in a meaningful discussion of the climate topic and an impressive breakdown for the various economic impacts to the US over the next few decades, check out riskybusiness.org/. It's detailed, but accessible to non-scientists and has a very nice bibliography, so folks can track down sources.
Matt Reynolds won't stop fidgeting during the climate debate because he feels awkward AF up there. I'd probably pull a Baraki and just go "get some coffee."
Baraki was already prepping to get the hell out of dodge during the RPE discussion. You can see his foot shaking like crazy. The climate topic coming up was the last straw.
At the seminars, people are required to come up with three questions for the Q&A. But if questions keep coming up, then they put the answers in the seminar itself. That leaves most people with no real questions, so they come up with bullshit to get a reaction or amusing story.
Please never ever again get Rip started on politics, look I'd love what you're doing for strength training, but ... please don't ever summon the ghost of Donald Trump again.

this is the best comment XD the GHOST of Donald Trump!
It may seem like a useless tangent, but Rip is attempting to teach these people how to think (e.g. - look at the data yourself). Also, he does have a geology degree, so he isn't completely talking out his ass.
Geology is a very wide field. Stating that there is "no evidence" for manmade climate change is blatantly wrong and really completely talking out his ass. If you're in doubt, here is a 'nature' article (nature is probably the highest ranking scientific journal that there is on the world): www.nature.com/articles/srep21691.pdf and here's NASA's statement on the topic: climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/
Re climate: Note that atmosphere is already virtually opaque at IR. Can't retain more than 100% of the IR. Adding more CO2 should spur plant growth tho.
Look, people on the same staff can have disagreements. Jordan Fiegenbaum I know has a staunch disagreement with Rip on Climate Change. As I'm sure Austin does too. But guess what, if your squat isn't even in the ballpark as high as the staff on here you have no right to throw an opinion on this subject and you must remain respectful.
Alan thrall and Rip together, the stars are aligned.

Was this the beginning of the Barbell Medicine and Alan Thrall alliance?
Sort of, I think when Austin started coaching Alan is when it really happened because that's when Alan started getting results again and they speak for themselves.
Yes.
Wow that was Alan Thrall o_o
Yup, he's there to fail the Starting Strength coach exam.
Actually, he may be one of the few people there who stand a chance at passing.
Khechari lmfao yeah I'm scared shitless of the day I have to take that exam
Steel Star Fitness I wonder if that is why he hasn't posted in over a month?
Jeff Parker it probably is. The exam takes "dozens" of pages of writing for a successful pass
You can see that Austin doesn't agree with the opinions on RPE
Rip somehow believes that you need a PhD in theoretical physics to know whether you have one rep or two reps left in the tank.
Hello All
How do you know?! If you haven’t trained for 20 years, you can’t possibly know your RPE scale.
Hello All you shouldn’t be thinking about RPE mid-set, it should be retrospective immediately after the set. And a RPE 9 shouldn’t be “I could probably grind out one more rep” - it should be “I could confidently do one more rep”
Did someone seriously ask what uncle rippy thinks of climate change...

How about rip sticks to doing another version of starting strength instead talking bullshit about global warming. I loved starting strength but as a physicist I have to say stfu rip and good move from Dr. B. Chapeau.

That's part of why they're physicists.
Did Austin purposefully leave for the climate change talk? lol
Its like when you see a sports caster slowly slide out of frame when his colleague is about to say something slightly racist :)
Very doubtful. Dr. Baraki isn't a pussy, and will listen to opinions even if he doesn't agree with them. I don't know whether he agrees or disagrees, but he would listen regardless.

He pops back up like it took him 7 minutes to fill up his coffee. awww damn. By far top 5 best episodes of Ask Rip.

Its socially irresponsible to encourage personal irresponsibility.
Each posits a level of accepting lies he is too smart to fall for. Sadly most people are either stupid or simply gullible and cannot understand how often people lie for gain in this world.
Anyone know what the chart is called or where I could see it
Geological time scale (for all Eras)
To falsify the hypothesis of human caused climate change I would require that you analyse
the atmosphere using precisely calibrated and accurate measurement tools, and report that the CO2 atmospheric concentration and other greenhouse gases are continuing to rise year on year but the average temperature of the oceans has not risen over the same period of time, that the ice sheets in the Arctic/ Antarctica have at least retained their ice sheet thickness and thus their surface area.
Further perhaps this link about sea level rise might be of interest: skepticalscience.com/sea-level-rise-intermediate.htm
One last point.

How can someone be so knowledgeable about human physiology and such little about climate change?
Hey, not everyone’s good at everything. 🤷🏻♂️
I mean I know a lot about certain tech concepts, but nothing about materials production, and those are way more closely related than human physiology and climate change. Although the difference is I don't pretend to know more about stuff than I do.
Because they are two completely different areas of science.
The best part of Askrip so far: Alan our boy!!!
The worst part of Askrip so far: The fuck was that climate shit?
Global warming is a cult lead by people who want power. Check out Tony Heller's channel to see all the lies exposed.

You couldn't even get the basic gist of the informal fallacies you're invoking. Read the whole Wikipedia article again.
That video should've been named "Alan Thrall's question for SS Seminar" :D
Rip is dead wrong on his opinions on conditioning for battle. I've been to combat, I've been in firefights, you do need to be able to operate at a high-level of intensity for upwards of 15 to 20 minutes. Whether your Army or Marine Corps you should be able to complete your run requirement in 12 to 20 minutes. The running requirements in the PT test do simulate The ability to operate at a high intensity for a duration of time. If you can't do that, I don't want to fight with you.
His program enables you to do that.
Besides, if you cant deadlift 405 AND figure out a way to run 2 miles in 15 minutes...youre not strong at all
@@gregorystacey2470 Rip hates endurance and flexibility. Take one look at his midsection, and you can see why.

@@climbscience4813 Thank you. RIP should stick to strength training and leave climate change to the experts.
Rip is the hero we need
The contrarian that is Rip brings up some great points. RPE is very useful, but only if you're honest and you have some safeguards in place. Rip's theatricality aside, you'll think some.
The whole basis of science is peer reviewed data. That is how you go from subjective research, to objective research.
Baloo0254 Money, money, money, money, money, money. Money.
Peer reviewed... do you know what peer means? People you know review, ie read, whatever you want to publish for a few hours.
So much more respect for Rip.
They're also saying the Texas Method is pretty much crap, even if set up as a 4 day version with 2 upper/2 lower days as described in PPST (3rd ed.) which fixes a lot of the issues people have with stock TM (not enough pulling volume, not enough upper body volume etc.)
I don't know what to believe any more actually :D
Rip's a climate change expert, lol

@Badger0fDeath hey you fake pussy piece of shit..how many peer reviewed studies do you need? How many scientists do you need?
Saying you are at least 8 out of 10 pain is perfectly rational as if you call it a 4 out of 10, your doctor won't think your issue is serious.
well if your in the Marines I guess you could just drive all day and lift all day and get a 450 deadlift and then go push through a town forever without getting tired.... mark go to the Marine corps fitness hq and talk so boldly
It's a pity that you bought the pseudo-science of the climate alarmists. And need to make a thing of it, on somebody else's strength training channel.
"That's all, an opinion."
This is a religion for these people (the alarmists). So for them, it can't just be "an opinion." You either accept their dogma or you're an evil heretic (denier).
PanzerKami everything he said is a fact, before you say he is wrong it is on you to present your data.
These are so damn entertaining.
3 mm a century huh? Tell that to the people in Florida where parts of the state are flooding from sea level rise..
Even conservatives in New Orleans have admitted that global warming is real since we're directly affected by it from worse storms every year, even more brutal summers, and more frequent/severe flooding when it rains.
'Welcome to a new episode of "Ask Rip Whatever the Hell You Want and He'll Give You an Expert Fucking Answer" ....
"hammered fuck" got to remember that one
I am so thankful that this video popped up when I needed it the most.
I am a complete novice so obviously I can just carry on with my programming and not worry about such advanced stuff.
By the way, what Mark says makes total sense. You are wasting time making a subjective assessment of exertion applied. But what truly matters is no matter how much of a grinder it was, you still made the lift. That is all the solace and consolation a powerlifter truly needs.
A big thanks to you Mark from India!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S.: Please bring Starting Strength to India. Desperately needed here
I feel like absolute "hammered fuck" right now
Good observation on the RPE training.
ClimbScience I couldn't have said it better
His argumentation was sound. Glad you unsubscribed because its your loss, bud.
You do understand that there's a reason this is such a strong debate, right? Your essentially scoffing at Rip's sound argument as if you personally have discovered the evidence. Adios.
I think he has said that vast majority of those who are lifting weights are cavemen. He's a prime example. No offence.
Gaaaay!
General, scientist and coach.
Why would you do a video about RPE and never once mention what RPE is? What the hell is RPE? What the hell are you talking about?
01:19 This very moment, Austin knew that he needs to go away!
Love that ending. Nice editing.
Dang I need that chart
RPE is for how many reps before failure mo re than how much pain youre in...
Dude's a 60 something GOP voter from TEXAS of all places. The fuck did you expect his position on climate change to be? haha
Ironically this problem is also going to be solved by attrition as Rip calls it.
Rip is such a cool guy!
0bama just bought Ocean front property in Martha’s Vineyard:)
Well there's also a guy in the Vineyard who literally picked up his entire house and had to move it 1000 feet because the rising sea levels have been chewing away at his available property space. I've personally seen the result in person. It's pretty freaky, but it looks like someone literally took a bite out of the side of the land.
RPE? Not in my backyard!!!
Alan Thrall is a damn viking
I don't know about y'all but I choose to ignore that climate rant so I can still trust what Rip has to say about lifting :)
That's the problem, I cannot "unsee" this. I cannot really rely on anything he says now. Just unsubscribed.
ClimbScience Good bye.
So did I, good bye
Soy boy reeeeee
hey I see Alan THrall in the audience
4 years to get a decent P in rpe? Darn. 2,5 years at least to learn.
Alan Thrall i SEYOU MR !!!!
Alan thrall! Nice
The guy lives in west texas so he probably wouldn't notice if the rest of the world turned into a stone dry wasteland
He lives in North Texas... not West Texas
3:50 watch Austin’s foot. Control your leakers, people.
Rip I love ya, can we stay on topic?
At the seminars, people are required to come up with three questions for the Q&A. But if questions keep coming up, then they put the answers in the seminar itself. That leaves most people with no real questions, so they come up with bullshit to get a reaction or amusing story.
Please never ever again get Rip started on politics, look I'd love what you're doing for strength training, but ... please don't ever summon the ghost of Donald Trump again.
this is the best comment XD the GHOST of Donald Trump!
MAGA
It may seem like a useless tangent, but Rip is attempting to teach these people how to think (e.g. - look at the data yourself). Also, he does have a geology degree, so he isn't completely talking out his ass.
Geology is a very wide field. Stating that there is "no evidence" for manmade climate change is blatantly wrong and really completely talking out his ass. If you're in doubt, here is a 'nature' article (nature is probably the highest ranking scientific journal that there is on the world):
www.nature.com/articles/srep21691.pdf
and here's NASA's statement on the topic:
climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/
I heard that voice like "Alan?" *looks around class, sees huge fucking beard*
Re climate: Note that atmosphere is already virtually opaque at IR. Can't retain more than 100% of the IR. Adding more CO2 should spur plant growth tho.
When I passed kidney stone I guaranfuckingtee you that was a 10.
RPE 11 would be a kidney rock.
@@problematic7993 no joke
“Train untaaamed...”
Sure wish I could watch these Starting Strength videos and not have to listen to ANY politics.
oh shit hey alan thrall
Did Mark fucking Rippetoe just deny climate change
As any intelligent person would.
My man you got me on climate change!
Nice way of thinking.
Alan my man!!!!!
You guys prob didn't know he has a degree in geology. His opinion on global warming is legitimate.
So, the weight on the squat is an indicator of credibility in a discussion on climate change? WTF, where did you get that weed from?
The guy that spoke about "a feminist framework for glaciology" is right, the feds actually spent 400k for that shit.
Physicians are not scientists. You should defer to actual scientists.
