You guys are nuts! I’m with Greg on this one. Spider-man 2 is the vastly superior film. The only bright spot in ASM is Garfield and Stone’s chemistry. This is one of the most cynical superhero movies ever. It’s unnecessarily dark in both tone and style. With the exception of the school scene, why does every scene with Spider-Man take place at night? Why did they think it was a good idea to have Spider-Man be driven by revenge instead of guilt? Why did they drop the parent subplot halfway through the movie, only to bring it back in one of the worst post credits sequences?
Say what you want about Rami’s Spider-Man 2, but it had way more heart and charm than ASM, and yes, is even better than a majority of the MCU movies.
peter parker 100% agreed. Spider-Man 2 has so much depth and charm and so damn memorable. They nail the Peter/Spider-Man struggle so well and that movie is full of amazing moments. AMS at the end of the day does have some good moments too but it’s dull and unmemorable and that pains me to say because I looove Spider-Man And never want a spidey movie to be bad...
BUT! To each their own! Look forward to seeing where they rank ASM 2 😂
peter parker you’re nuts. Spider-Man 2 was my favorite super hero as a kid movie until I rewatched it. Does not hold up. The train scene used to be the most emotional thing... now it’s just Toby making weird faces
Jorge Goias The train sequence is still one of the best superhero fight scenes. It’s Spidey being Spidey, swinging all over the place and selflessly saving citizens. I would probably make those exact same faces if I had to single handily stop a runaway train. 😖
if you honestly believe that then there is no arguing with you. Clearly we have different tastes when it comes to how silly faces translate to emotional scenes
Not to mention Spider-Man 2 was focused. It had solid direction and knew what it was trying to say and what it was supposed to be.
TASM was a mess. It was just a spider dumpster fire. It has moments but is a hot mess at best.
Spider-Man 2 was a whole moment. Every scene is a moment. It's an emotional masterpiece.

I never watched the Amazing Spiderman movies, and I really liked this one. It was damn fun. My biggest complaint is that he doesn't ever really fight, he just webs the bad guys up and sometimes kicks them. It didn't feel like he had super strength most of the time
It seems like he is consciously trying not to hurt anyone. It reminded me of Superior Spiderman when Otto realizes that Peter could've handed his ass to him so many times.

honestly, the gentleman stuff just drags it so far down in quality looking back, all the shit having to do with his parents being crazy drags the movies down, they could have been so good being exciting fun and romantic romps if you want to tie them all in together later, fine, but don't set up garbage before anyone even cares about them.

Amazing Spiderman is awful on it's own, even setting aside comparing it to the Raimi films. it's hack film making at its most transparent.
Sam Raimi trilogy just doesn’t hold up to the test of time. And Toby just makes too many weird faces. Amazing is definitely a better movie.
Kudos to Tim for standing up for characters and their relationships/development in this movie, and managing to be persuasive without skewering Greg for disagreeing. And kudos to Greg for managing to have a different opinion without getting excessively bitter about it.
The only reason why they made this movie was so they could keep the rights for a few more years.

Spider-Man 3 may be a bad movie, but at least it's enjoyable and is memorable. The biggest sin you can do in film is make a boring movie. Both Amazing Spider-Man movies are just so generic, forgettable and soulless. I can't believe they actually think TASM 1 is better than not just Spider-Man 1, but also Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man 3 was offensive, anything even remotely good was undone by that dance sequence . TASM was boring as a whole but had some good elements. TASM worst sin was that it felt like 2 hours of the beginning of any movie. Spider-Man 3 felt like it was done by someone Broadway who doesn't like comics, but was doing their best impression of what they think comic books are. Just a bunch of people bumping into each other for the thinnest of reasons.

Spiderman 3 really isn't a bad movie. It just has a bad reputation because it wasn't what people thought it would be. Sure some fo the writing is bad but for every bad scene there's 2 good ones. The movie is still done artistically. Something that can't be said for any Spiderman movie that has come after it

I really like that garfield's peter isnt an outsider because hes a dorky generic loser. I like the psychology of him being an orphan and the damage of that makes him keep people at a certain distance. I really dig this movie.
Except there is no psychology behind it because he's utterly sociable and displays no coping mechanisms or further desires that his history is at ends with. They made him an orphan because "that's a sad thing and hero needs a disturbance to start their journey" and they made him chipper and outgoing from time to time because "a main character has to be likeable" The were going down the writing for dummies checklist, they have no understanding of people - at least none that they had the balls to commit to film.
Yeah Garfield blew Tobey out the water. Plus the relationship with Gwen was fantastic.

I feel like the gang is trolling at this point I guess that’s the point of the podcast is just riffing on films and having a good time but at least try not to be so obvious about it. This was clearly meant to be above 3 but nothing else. Opinions are opinions sure but it’s so obvious you’re trying to get a rise out of the audience by praising a film that’s widely regarded as mediocre. So basically any film pre-2008 is considered trash at this point in the podcast.

Preying Ocelot you missed my point in that they criticize Amazing Spider-Man for everything that Raimi's film does and repeatedly call it forgettable and throwaway yet it's somehow better than Raimi's 1&2 that virtually makes no sense whatsoever. I just feel this mentality that any film that wasn't released in the last five years is trash and outdated should be someone who doesn't make a podcast about film reviews because it's just gonna be a cynical negative time as they're never gonna enjoy films at all.
Might be petty, but it’d be cool if the background changed from the Raimi films to the amazing series to homecoming to venom. Would be nice, thematically.
This is easily the best episode of "In Review" so far. LOVED IT.

I would say this is better than Spider-Man 1 but not better than Spider-Man 2 because there was nothing coming close to the train scene. That being said, all the things they had said about the characters being better, I totally agree with.
I did not think that the Amazing movies would be ranked higher than Rami’s in my list.

Raimi's Spider-Man films intentionally tried to replicate the vibe of cheesy 60s Spider-Man comics. And I think they succeeded. Well except for 3.
Every single thing they decry for being cheesy, I fucking love because it's JUST LIKE the old comics. It's a tribute.

I've recently rewatched them and the Rami films have not aged well. They're still fun, except 3. Tobey's performance is mediocre. I still don't think these are better overall, but Garfield gives a better performance than Tobey for sure

The quality of Raimi's trilogy is superior.
It's the AESTHETIC that people who say they are bad have a problem with.
Anyone familiar with Raimi knows he leans into "camp" and "melodrama" more than gritty realism. Campy and or melodramatic aesthetic is not inferior or bad. It is of a different style than gritty realism, or flashy slick cg of marvel.
What Raimi accomplishes in spiderman is top notch execution of that approach.
People not liking it is a reflection of personal taste. Not of the film quality.
In 20 years, nobody will remember Amazing movies, while Raimi trilogy is a classic.

I don't think many people will remember any one scene in any of the MCU movies either. BUT they will remember scenes from Spider 1 and 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. You watch.
That's also to do with the fact that the raimi movies did it first though? For example older people remember more about Keaton's batman than Bales. I m not disagreeing that raimis 2/3 movies are classics, but I actually like TASM even though it doesn't reach the heights of spiderman 2 even remotely. Some mistakes such as having spiderman being fuelled by revenge and also not developing the Jekyll and Hyde aspect of the lizard let this movie down.
You know, that's cool, your guys' list, Greg's the only one with any sense of appreciation for Raimi's movies and that makes me a little sad.

The one thing I will give credit the Amazing Spider-Man films for is how they portray his swinging -- especially in ASM2. It's JUST like Spider-Man PS4!

The biggest thing I took from this film in the context of this in-review series is that I honestly don't care how they rank. They all really just mesh together as these films that do some things well and others pretty poorly. And they all pale in comparison to Homecoming.
Really shows how poorly the Rami trilogy holds up.

The Construction thing at night is a real thing. In the summer it's too hot for them to work during the day when it's over 100 so they work at night. it happens all over the US
I cant stand this movie from the terrible characterization to the dumb parents plot line that they completely forgot about half way through the movie as well as the dumb revenge plot that they also drop out of nowhere which completely baffled me they really just drop it with now closure at all, uncle ben died when in no way he should have, terrible villain motivation and design, the flirting scenes while well done lasted way too long, the fact that the movie had literally 6 editors and it shows, I dont like the suit, that scene where he skates with his powers was dumb....... wow that got really petty and I kinda blacked out writing this but that's what this movie does to me it's such a bad Spiderman movie. I didn't intend on this comment being so long sorry for that
It's like if they didn't even bother making excuses for changing themes in Spiderman 3 and said "ok enough with the neglectful boyfriend stuff, alien man wants revenge." 3 is not graceful at all, but it at least ATTEMPTS to bridge these changes to complete its story.

I am actually one of the few people who will agree with this ranking. The characters in the Raimi movies were so terrible that I couldn't look past it. The plot of Spider-Man 2 is better than the plot in ASM, sure, but everytime anyone but Doc Oc is on screen the film is really cringy
I think this plot is just as good as SM2s if not better (both villains have really stupid plans lol), I personally love this movie too. It's nice to find someone else who actually likes this movie lol
The High School that I went to here in NYC was called "The Bronx High School of Science." It was based in The Bronx, not Manhattan, but it was one of the top 3 Specialized High Schools in New York. Fun fact: Tom Holland actually spent a few months there undercover as he prepared for his role in Homecoming.
So broke my foot and a week ago and am layed up in my bed and I'm watching these movies b 4 the review and I gotta say, the amazing spider man is way better then any of the Sam raimi trilogy. Tobey sucks as both Peter parker and spider man, where as Andrew Garfield isnt a good Peter Parker but is a fantastic spider man. The action is better the story is eh so so but the fact is the overall quality of the movie is just better then the Tobey Maguire series, this could also b a product of it being more modern rather then actually better cuz those Sam raimi movies really havent aged well
When Nick said this had the better uncle Ben I thought back to the scene when he said " if you have amazing powers you have to be a good person" or some b.s that wasn't "great power comes great responsibility."
The real problem is that he says "it's not about choice, it's about responsibility" which is DUMB.

I really enjoyed this movie and I went into it fucking ready to shit on it. Knowing what is coming in the sequel hurts this movie for me now but I can still watch it and enjoy it.

I really think they misread the Raimi movies, at least the first two. Peter Parker has a fantastic character arc in Spider-Man 2, and so does Harry. Peter realizing why he has to be Spider-Man even if it tears his life apart, and accepting the responsibility of being Spider-Man even if he doesn't want it is part of what makes Peter Parker Spider-Man. The dialogue is campy as hell but that gives it personality as opposed to the blandness that is TASM movies. All this happening while Harry is struggling with the death of his father and hating Spider-Man while still trying to retain his relationship with Peter, who he knows is "friends" with Spider-Man is a great dynamic. The thematic and character depth is what makes the first two Raimi movies great, and the great set pieces and action mixed with the campiness that Raimi brings from his roots in the Evil Dead franchise is a bonus that gives the movie an extremely unique feel, even among superhero movies today
It seems a lot of people here are not rewatching these movies along with y'all, because this ranking is nothing but truth (though I do see an incredibly strong case for 1st and 2nd swapping)
Exactly. Everyone still has their nostalgia goggles on for the Raimi trilogy and haven't actually watched them with an objective eye in a long time.

This movie isn't bad, it is decent, but it is a total rehash and lacks any real creativity. Outside of the chemistry between Gwen and Parker, nothing stands out. It is extremely forgetable.

Literally the only claim you made that I even disagree with is that this movie isn't bad; it definitely is. As far as everything else, yes, this movie is bland, but there's more to a movie than uniqueness. For me, as well as these guys we're watching talk about these movies, the style of Sam Raimi's trilogy is off putting. Also, this story is actually way more unique than any of the Raimi movies, just not in a good way. The first two movies pulled everything they had from comics, while this actually changed characters and dynamics (failed in execution though)
This series is so damn good. Maybe have a couple tweaks to the rankings, but I appreciate this list.

It's forgettable because it's a movie that does everything "right" but not anything memorable. SM3 is memorable because it does everything wrong. I think it's pretty easy to say which one is actually better, and I think they hit the nail on the head with this one.

Garfield’s Peter is infinitely better than Maguire’s.
So I know movies are subjective. However I just can't wrap my head around how you guys can say this Spiderman is better. He quips once, one time. Then he tells the guy his day could have gotten worse because he basically would have either beaten the living shit out of him or killed him if he had the tattoo that uncle Bens murderer had. This movie is all over the place. His quest to find uncle Bens killer is abandoned half way through. The quest itself is so not what Spiderman should be, he beats up random people and would kill them if they have that tattoo. He is a dick throughout most of the film. He's an ass to Captain Stacey, an ass to uncle Ben. He steals someones badge at oscorp then watches them get humiliated and dragged out. Him taking pictures of Gwen is just creepy. He constantly looks like he is fighting a hangover. The football scene and the lizard hideout plan reveal scene are fucking awful. The suit is garbage, the villain sucks. It looks awful, it doesn't have a style and the dark gritty colour palette was so wrong. I could go on for another paragraph. I like the score plus the chemistry between Garfield and Stone but their chemistry does not save this shit show. Even though I disagree I can understand if you think Homecoming is better than Spiderman 2, since Homecoming is great. However this film is so bad and somehow Amazing Spiderman 2 is worse. Sorry for the essay, love ya guys.

I respect your opinion but couldn't disagree more. I felt like Peter's behavior in this movie is MUCH more like how a teenager would respond instead of how a 40 year old virgin (aka Toby Macguire's spider-man) would :)

As an aside, I’m really nostalgic for Christopher Daniel Barns portrayal of Spider-Man from the 90s cartoon. I’m happy some companies and developers used him in recent Spider-Man shows and games. He usually plays an alternate reality Spider-Man (i.e. 2099, and Spider-Man Noir).

I was going into these thinking Amazing would rank over 3, but this movie is the definition of hack film making. No one cared about what they were doing with this movie. Boring as sin camera work, a bafflinginly cheap soundtrack, sub par, fugue-like performances with Andrew. This movie gets the basics of movie making right and almost nothing else. It's a 5.
Yeah I couldnt believe how lame the soundtrack was in this one, especially compared to the first three which have one of the best scores ever.
I have a question I'm not that well versed in Spider-Man lore but what's the relationship between Peter Gwen and MJ not just in the movies but in general because I'm use to just MJ.
Gwen was Peter's GF before MJ. The green goblin threw her off a bridge and when spiderman went to go save her, she died. Whether she died before spiderman webbed her or spiderman killed her when he webbed her back and snapped her neck, we may never know.
I stand with Greg on this one, I just liked the first two Spider-Man movies more than this one.

I love that this is number 1. I don't even care for the Amazing films it's just great to see some rational thinking when it comes to the Raimi trilogy. It deserves to get shit on. The only good parts of the Raimi trilogy are Doc Ock and JJJ.
