  • I was fortunate enough to visit the LeMay Marymount collection / museum this past weekend while on a family trip to Tacoma.
Here are a few clips some of the cool motorcycles that they have on display and just a few of the more than 1,500 cars!
It's an amazing eclectic collection. It seems that Harold LeMay loved collecting cars and vehicles of every kind. I spent about 3 hours there and only skimmed the surface. It was a really enjoyable time and the volunteer team members were just great.

I'm a big fan of old machinery but I find collections like this a bit unsettling. I can't put my finger on it but to see all those exhibits stacked up and unaccessible is just a bit spooky. Will anyone far into the future ever want to see these things [or more than one example]. I think I'd rather see them sold off and ridden/driven by enthusiasts until their time is done -100years? Thanks for the video though an amazing place.

Thanks caahacky. Yes, I know what you mean. It's almost overwhelming to see so many vehicles, especially those that you can't see close up as they are up on those shelves. It does seem that they are trying to reduce the number of duplicates, but they are also acquiring more motors that are being donated by families of guys who are sadly passing away!

@@TheMightyGarage my grandfather actually restored these cars for lemay and my grandmother did the interiors and upholstery. The condition of some of these were little less then rust buckets pulled from out of the trees or junkyards and my grandpa would restore them to better than new factory condition. When there was special parts needed he didnt scour the country hunting for parts. He had a little black book of his contacts at all the manufactures and with a phone call and bargaining got people to pull the original molds and make a factory oem. Parts like the dashes or panels and when he was done my grandpas restos use to sit up on revolving peddistools with mirrors on the ground so you could see how emaculate the restoration was at the old school lemay shows where you had to take a bus to multipul campuses just to see them all. I get the sentiment that people want to see these things just being drivin around and enjoyed i really do. However you have to understand just how much impossible had to be achieved for some of those beauties to even be there to look at. I myself have put hands on some of those restorations blasting of the rust and even eating sections away with the sandblaster so that we could get down to the good metal. 30+ years went into restoring cars for lemay, by my grandfather lee hoyt. And my grandma diane hoyt did the interiors rebuilding seats and i put in many a hour in the upholstery shop doing everything from pulling hog rings to razor blading the stitching apart and steaming the patterns out.

Many thanks Brian for sharing this wonderful story about your grandparents. That was so interesting to read. It is an amazing collection and I hope to see it again this year for the motorcycle days event. Best wishes, Mike

Does this place still exist or are all the cars in the big new shiny building off the freeway in Tacoma?

Hi Gary, this place does still exist. There are actually two LeMay locations. This is the original and the new one is the one that you mentioned next to the Superdome off the freeway. Best wishes,
