I have the 60’s faded with the uncovered 61 r/t and love it. Bought a tribute last week and then left for a two week military trip. I’m dying to get back home and compare the two, but this video helped calm me a bit. Great content!!
I have had a tribute for 6 month's now. I really like the 490 pickups, the satin finish and maple neck. For me there's no point in spending another 1k for a standard. I will probably get another good guitar for that. Great comparison by the way👍
I REALLY appreciate your time in making this video. I have a 60's Standard...but it JUST doesn't sit well with me. BUT...I'm like..."am I REALLY stupid for getting rid of a high-end Standard for a Tribute?" UGH!
Thank you very much for the VERY generous Thanks! I have personally gone back and forth on quite a few "High End" Guitars. The truth of the matter is: If you don't feel it, you don't feel it. It could be the weight of the guitar, it could be the gloss, it could be any number of things. The Tributes are GREAT guitars! Lots of people prefer them because of the Satin Nitro and weight relief. There's a little more resonance due to the Satin Nitro and Relief, which generally feels better to the player. Preferences are preferences. There's a reason why lots of us will play "Every Les Paul in the Joint" when we go to buy 1 specific Les Paul. Some just have that special magic! Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar Oh, I get it. Been playing for over 35 years and have owned countless guitars. I took my 2020 60s Standard into Sweetwater today to play against two Tributes. The long and short of this entire debate between Standards and Tributes (for me) is that the quality difference is quite substantial. That doesn't mean that Tributes aren't serving A LOT of people very well! They're very good in their own right! But at the end of the day, the Standard...is...the Standard. Too much for this thread...but it's like playing a Fender Squier Telecaster, then grabbing an American Professional. :) Anyway...I traded my 2022 1960s Unburst in on a used 2020 1950s Tobacco Burst today. It's funny because my guitar was flawless, and this 1950s one has dings everywhere, buckle rash, was missing strap buttons, missing the pickguard, case all beat up. But, you guessed it...sounds and plays KILLER. Onward. Upward. :)
Owned both and kept the Tribute. I did upgrade the pots/caps and handwired everything but kept the 490s. Also put in locking tuners. The Standard is amazing too but I used the money I got for it on an EVH 5150iii el34 and cab instead. To me, the Tribute is just easier to play due to the lighter body and thinner maple neck. It gets about 95% of the tone of the standard, especially considering the 490s are imo a better pickup overall than the 61s...particularly the bridge. The Standard is amazing and has a "fuller" deeper tone but the difference can be easily be near zero after some eq adjustments.
The sound difference s , were extremely subtle, could only say the 60s sounded just a tad thicker in tone. The finish on the 60s was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.
The original wiring with orange drop capacitors is awesome I have a 1950 and a 1960 Gibson Les Paul the tone range is amazing on the guitars far as the tone pots
I have a few Gibsons with Orange Drop Caps and the Audio Taper Pots, They're GREAT! It's really nice, especially with some nice break up tones! I think I have them in 5 Gibsons? LP Traditional, LP Standard 60s, LP Junior, SG Standard '61, and SG Junior. I couldn't imagine the Jrs without them haha! Quite responsive and versatile! Cheers -Ryan
Interesting. I bought a 2018 tribute (hog neck, no weight relief 490/498 pups) i ran the racks at Sam Ash (other than Custom shop) and the tribute felf right to me. The savings was nice too as id walked in expecting to buy a classic. I did swap the pickups and circuit board, but thats just personal taste. Nothing really wrong with the stock stuff, just wasn't quite right for me.
HOW IN THE HELL DID I NOT KNOW THAT THE 2018 TRIBUTES DID NOT HAVE WEIGHT RELIEF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And here I thought I was slimming down my list of guitars to buy this summer... DAMMIT! Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar Yeah, of the 17-19 years, 18 is the only non weight relief body. Mine is 9.2lbs on kitchen scale. I changed the wiring to creamtone drifted 57-59 harness, front pup to a 2014 gibson 59 burstbucker 1 nickle cover, and the bridge to a 2014 59 burstbucker 1 double black uncovered. Both unpotted. They are a bit microphonic (but I like that) and really good. Bridge is so bright I usually run tone around 3/4 way up.
I really love both. But I like the standard microphones a little more. It would be really good to be able to choose the microphones you want, whether it's the 61 burstbucker, its 499,498, the 57 classics... To not blow the budget too much I could put the 61' in the body of 'to tribute...
Finally found My tribute honey burst , had a few shipped but most required enormous amounts of tech work to bring them to playable . got a 22 model that i was able to dial in myself within reason . . Great guitar 490's are nice (actually prefer them) . .gotta watch what Gibson ships out the door , they have a quality control issue still (not addressed ) . Either they dont GAF or they are signaling they have given up
Well, this was my dilemma, standard or tribute, and beside the looking, just because the sound, the Tribute has warmer sound that I prefer...more jazzy sound...beside that, the sounds are almost the same, not big differences Standard doesn't sound 3 times better to justify the price, but of course, I can recognize that the Standard is an 'Icon' in guitars....you can by a Casio watch and will be give you the time perfectly, but if you like watches, you want a Rolex (Gibson standard) :) ; The video is great, thank you for that, with this video I decided to go for the Tribute....is good enough for me...
I have a Tribute on the way this week. I love the feel of them and do love the stock 490’s but man that standard sounds wonderful. What specific pickups are in that?
Get her involved in the purchase… I bought this AND the Tribute at the same time lol. The wife picked the colour of the Standard… and was pleasantly surprised when I Brought the Tribute home because I thought she would like the colour! Haha! Cheers -Ryan
Get her something she wants at the same time. It'll work. I did the same thing before with success. And then suddenly she won't be as concerned about money. 😃
Lol that's cool. There's so much going on here. Gloss vs satin. Flame vs plain, binding vs none. I think if you're just playing at home and need something to noodle on the tribute is great. Personally big fan of satin here, and also the 70s Les pauls had maple necks. Maybe it's just me but I love the plain. Let the tone do the talking flashy guitars are just to distract from the player 😂
Excellent brother! Well done review. I'm torn man! Which one to get. I just got a Gibson SG '61 Standard, and I compared with my Gibson Les Paul Studio, and I got to say the bridge pickup on the SG '61 sound a little "harsh" or "brittle" (or maybe hotter) than the 498T on my studio. I was wondering what are your thoughts? I am having a little problem dialing in a clean sound on the SG. I'm always lovin' your reviews.

Nice demo! Looks like I’ll get a tribute. Thanks for doing this.

Standard has more "punch" in my ears. Sounds great.
I own a Tribute from 2019. It's great too.
Once again, the 490t is hard to hate 😉 with the 61t more output and "atmosphere"... Greats rifs ! I love your stuff and your passion !

Congrats man! I have had such a hard time putting down my Standard 50s ever since I got mine in December! Love it! Cheers -Ryan
Dude!!! You’re in my upcoming metal band now, ok?!?! 😂😂
Please! Killer killer riffs and playing dude.

Problem with burstbuckers is they're not potted and can be microphonic from what I've looked at.
In my opinion the tribute is the one that comes closest to the standard in sound, despite the low price, Gibson has done a great job on this guitar..
great test...all what we need.......btw tribiute for this price superb.

@@Crypticmaskguitar yeah the audio tape pots are amazing you can get way more trouble out of them than a ordinary tone petroleum.

I have both, and they fit different songs.
damnn that metal tone ❤❤
The Tribby's body is actually thinner, too

Every gibson ive picked up from 2020 and up jas been flawless
Please, tell me, what your pickup height on lp 60s???

Different feels to both guitars. But BOTH ARE GREAT CHOICES! Cheers -Ryan
Tribute is warmer.
Are those the tobacco burst finish
Tribute is Satine Iced Tea and the Standard is Bourbon Burst. Cheers -Ryan

Tribute all day long, to me they sound the same, especially through the Orange rigs. Not to mention the price
Tribute way better
the bounded body-neck of the standard shames the tribute and makes it look like a garbage bag when switching betweeen the two on the screen
