"You really got me" of course had a far greater resonance and was a blueprint for 1000s of American highschool bands who played nasty snarling 3-chord rock in that vein in '65/'66 (60s punk as it was later called), and of course for the hardrock bands like Steppenwolf who came a year or two later.
The older song was less distinctive (though some claim it to be the first real R'n'R recording), one of many stepping stones on the path from 40s R'n'B to Rock'n'Roll.

The birth of guitar distortion, the guitar player cut the paper on the speaker cone on purpose to get this distorted sound and everyone loved it and they all started doing the same. Not long after guitar amp makers started making amps to re-create this new distortion sound everyone wanted.

Vin, It's okay not to like the song (indeed, hate it) but this is one of the earliest songs which would influence metal in time. This was 1964 when the Beatles were in their early phase. It was one of the first songs with distortion (they slashed the speaker on their amps) and they are up there almost with the Beatles and Stones as the finest british rock bands of the 60s with many hits. Yes the song is simplistic but what were the Beatles doing in 1964! Whether you hate it or not this is considered a rock classic and its been covered by Metallica. Still, I respect your opinion.

Dave Davies invented Hard Rock, Punk and Metal with his tone, style and playing with this song. The part before the solo where he goes "oh no", they had to add that and the laughs, because Dave yelled at his brother "fuck off!!" when recording it. Also when on an airplane ride together, Jimi Hendrix who was very humble and quiet was so pleased to meet Dave Davies and told him this was the greatest sounding guitar tone he ever heard. The Kinks first few hits "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All of The Night", "Till The End of The Day" etc, are brilliant riffs. If you want a heavier Kinks song listen to "Rats".

The Kinks was one of the most influential groups of the 60s. Their library of music ranges with various styles. There's this, then "Lola" about a guy who accidentally found himself dancing with a cross dresser, then "Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon" that starts out "The tax man's taken all my dough, and left me in my stately home, lazing on a sunny afternoon..." and as recently as the 80s they recorded "Come Dancing" telling the story of how the place his older sister used to go dancing back in the day. Give them a listen, you won't regret.

this is the difference between what i'd call pure songwriting and the kind of stuff bands like tool do. it's easy to take for granted a little pop gem like this. Bruce Springsteen once said that the goal of any great pop song is to make something that is completely of the moment, couldnt have been made at any other time, and makes the listener so happy to be alive right now when said song is being released. I would add that there is also a timelessness to the format, the minimalism of this structure that has been largely unchanged for almost 100 years of pop music. there's something amazing about the fact that i can put on a song made for teenagers 50 years ago and get that same feeling they got, so happy to be alive in 1964. And also that someone like taylor swift can write a song that does that for young people today that i can play for my 96 year old aunt and she can immediately understand and enjoy. try playing tool for a 96 year old, and explain how deep it is and see if they like it.

The 50s had the first real Teenagers. The first wave of 'youth music' that really draws the line in the sand between what there parents were listen to and what was theres, "Louie Louie" has this wild energy that must have sounded like Mayhem to parents back then. Can't help but want to dance when you hear it. The lyrics mean next to nothing, which makes it all the more amazing, its just the energy, that abstract indescribable something that makes it glow like the contents of the suitcase in pulp fiction 70 years later. It's that abstract depth that makes it just as complex as anything. you can learn how to use time signature and key changes, you can practice your way in to shredding when your 10 years old (plenty of vids of this on youtube), but you can't learn how to write a hit that keeps going for 70 years. thats some holy shit. that has the complexity of god and the universe inside it.

There are so many ways to paint with music, but it's really all the same too. burzum is dick dale is mozart is your mothers heartbeat. it's fun to analyze the little details of what makes a particular song or sound beautiful, but it's important to see the big picture too. no such thing as bad music when you back up far enough. at least not bad genres or sounds, bad composition or bad performance maybe but i don't thing there's a genre that doesn't have something to offer.
