Gatorade is by far the leading sports drink. It started as something intended to help a specific football team and has since grown into what they are today. My grandmother lived on Long Beach Island, NJ and spent winters snowbirding in Florida. At some point in the mid-1970's, she wrote a letter to Gatorade saying how sad she was she couldn't find it back home, so the company (probably realizing she lived on a beach resort island) courtesy shipped a case of the stuff to the Beach Haven IGA, as well as to one to her. As far as we know, that was one of Gatorade's first appearances in the northeast.
We used to have a copy of the thank you letter they mailed her. I kind of wish we still did, because in hindsight that was kind of a huge thing.

@@nelzelpher2088 Pedialyte is an electrolyte replacement drink for when you are sick. Its found in the baby isle of most grocery stores and Walmart Target type stores because of the way its marketed for babies and children who often tend to get diarrhea and can die from malnutrition otherwise. But doctors recommend it for adults too. I used to hmget strep infections with severe diarrhea and I'm certain this stuff saves my life. I could drink Gatorade all day and feel nothing but this stuff would get me right back up.
It has much less sugar and more potassium and sodium than Gatorade. Its usually pretty strong so you might cut it with water 50/50 but it depends on which one you buy I guess.

There's just something about gatorade that i never liked, even as a kid. Its got that same weird manufactured taste that sunny d or Hawaiian punch have. Where like... Even if you buy a different flavor it still has that weird... Something about it? Probably because you can still taste the salt even through all of the sugar they've added. Its just too much. Powerade is not as sweet or sickly... Sorry I literally cant believe I just typed an entire paragraph about my feelings on these beverages.

When I was a kid I was at my cousin's house. We got thirsty and she reached in the cabinet for a tub of powdered Gatorade with that oldschool logo. I was like wtf? That looks like laundry detergent.
An interesting topic too is Powerade is sold in fast food restaurants: McDonalds, Sonic, Wendys, Whataburger etc. so im surprised they don’t have more of a market. Gatorade ABSOLUTELY wins at bottle sales but i’d be interested in that aspect of Powerade.
Coco slider. I used to work for Quaker Oats and after for Pepsi. Gatorade was our top product at Quaker. Our go to market strategy was to be present at locations where people associate the product with sport... hence nba, nfl, nascar etc.. so that when people do excercise
they will imitate their favorite players that are drinking the product. Also, having Gatorade at fast food restaurants does not generate sales since people are not doing exercise and thus don’t need the product. Whereas we made sure we were present at all gyms . Hope this helps a bit. Oh and by the way we beat Powerade EVERYWHERE. We were dominant.

I’m surprised at the lack of comments discussing this. It really stood out to me.
That is the cover of a famous book called “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”. It is a history book about the regime of Hitler and in no way endorses Nazis or white supremacy. The choice of dust jacket art would probably be rethought today but the book was published years ago to document how Hitler came to power and was defeated.

The first time I heard of Gatorade was in a marketing class at Old Dominion University in 1970. Our professor presented it as a case study and I didn't know it was a real product. I remember thinking what a silly name, even for a fictitious product. It doesn't sound silly anymore, of course, household term. Thanks for this video, Company Man, you obviously spent a lot of time producing it.

I think that the great design work on the orange coolers and seeing them on the sidelines/in the dugouts on televised sports really helped brand recognition.
I think the need for Gatorade vs the need for plain water also depends on your fitness level/ability. A regularly-active person will be fine with drinking water after a jog/workout, since their body will be able to adjust its usage of electrolytes.
However, someone who is JUST starting a workout regimen, or someone who is handicapped/disabled is going to want the Gatorade, because it's taking more energy to move. As someone with Cerebral Palsy, I know my legs still feel weak after running errands if I drink JUST water, but taking a few swigs of Gatorade on the way home, my legs have more strength in them.
I think it also depends on the environment the activity takes place in (especially if it's hot and humid, like a lot of Florida--where the drink was developed). The studies I've read suggest that, in the conditions the Florida Gators football team regularly played in, Gatorade might actually have helped keep the team from flagging late in the game.
Was it the only factor for success that year? Probably not, as suggested in the video. But I think he might have downplayed the importance of Gatorade *in those specific conditions* a bit too much.
There’s also electrolyte water. Most people don’t need the sugar from Gatorade. It’s by far the best option.

I used to train 3 hours a day 4x a week and I can really tell based on experience that Gatorade is effective. The sugar and electrolytes help me stay focused on my training. Without it, I get dizzy and lethargic on the 2nd hour.
I miss those Gatorade bottles from the 2000s with the twist top you could open and close like a water bottle.

I used to think that Gatorade didn't do all that much compared to water, but I was completely wrong about that. In my sophomore year of high school I ran outdoor track. One of our earlier meets was on April vacation. This particular year in April it had suddenly gotten hot, so we went from running in 60 degree weather to high 80's/low 90's. The meet was supposed to start at 11am, but the bus broke down and we didn't start until 1pm. I had run the mile in previous meets and was going to try the mile/2 mile double for the first time. I ran within 1 second of my best in the mile, but was completely wiped by the end. I drank a good amount of water, but I was completely exhausted when I walked up to the starting line for the 2 mile. I did terrible and it made me not want to try the double again. Later that day I went home and was totally exhausted. Pulled some Gatorade out of the refrigerator and it was incredible how much better it made me feel. I was no longer feeling tired and weak. I have no doubt in my mind that I could have run faster in the 2 mile that day if I had been drinking a sports drink instead of just water.

to be fair, powerade is generally a little bit cheaper. Whenever I'm on a long bike ride, sometimes I'll get some powerade.

I'm a 240 lbs half marathon runner. Gatorade (and other race fuels) comes in handy when you're doing something for a very, very long period of time and need to replenish more than just hydration. If I'm doing an hour-long run, I should probably drink some gatorade after the run instead of water. However, if all I am losing is hydration, say a short run, a cycling for 50 minutes, or exercise intervals, water is probably all I will need and all I should drink since gatorade's sugar and carbs will hamper my weight loss. That's what it really comes down to.

Im a cashier/waiter in a retro burger joint (maybe stay out of there??? lol) and Gatorade keeps me from dehydrating, temporarily keeping my blood sugar from dipping too low, and keeps my stamina up. When I run out, I can survive off of the super cold water from the soda machine till I go home.

My experience with Gatorade goes back to when I was in the Judo team for my high school and subsequently, college varsity team. The practices were brutal and daily. Its the toughest, most physically demanding thing I have ever done. We had regular water breaks and I can say that there was a decidedly different between tap water and Gatorade. Gatorade felt more refreshing and I could recover quicker between matches.

Company Man please do! It was more visible when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. It was a big deal! They would have a little tv special to surpise the winner. The huge packet with the lists of magazines you can buy and the entry forms came in the mail once or 2x a year. It was exciting. It was part of pop culture as well.

I used to do a lot of cycling (48 km a day and once a week an additional 90 km with the cycling club of my company). One day I kind of ran out of time while preparing for the 90 km after coming home from the 48 km trip and filled my drinking bladder up with water.
It was not too hot at 26°C but after about 45 km (30 miles) I started feeling very thirsty despite drinking enough of a volume of water to keep me hydrated. I just got thirstier and thirstier and collapsed on the doorstep back home....
My doctor told me i lost too many minerals and should stick to sports drinks or a mix of water and apple juice.
They do make a difference but you really need to push yourself quite hard or to be an athlete to notice the difference (^-^;)
That day I rode 138 km (about 85 miles) in total at an average speed of 43 km/h (27 miles/hour) which was already very tiring even without mineral depletion...
Yeah, most people don't need sports drinks. Just add a little salt to your breakfast. Only athletes or people who push themselves really hard need them.
for normal people mixing the drink with water is better because of the influx of sugar and electrolytes but not so much that you just pee it all back out. plus it has flavor so its easier to drink it while water can become bland and undesirable.

It makes a difference for me before and during work. It keeps me hydrated enough to not feel too fatigued but lately just drinking cold water from work's soda machine holds me over for the rest of the day when I run out in my thermos. So I see it as a good starting boost I guess. If I don't drink any all day I come home feeling slightly dehydrated no matter how much water I've had....

Huh, I never thought Gatorade was so big in America, in Australia Powerade has a lead at 58% and Gatorade is trailing at 33%. Though the best value in my opinion is those Maximus bottles, they only have a 7% market share but its really good value, on special they go for $2.5(AUD) for 1L
Ozoingo2 Searching it up I found that Powerade sponsers the Australian rugby league so thats probably the reason why. They also sponsor Fifa so it might also be popular in other parts of thr world compared to Gatorade which only sponsors American sports.

My father worked for Gatorade during the 80s and 90s... and he was a sales exec that worked in Sports Marketing. He spent quiet a lot of time at the Science lab in Barrington, IL.... and while I was working a construction summer job, he used to always tell me "Just drink water." Gatorade's success was largely attributed to their willingness to sell mass amounts of product to their vendor partners at deep discounts to flood the market. I mean... Walmart sells a bottle Gatorade for less than a bottle of water. The 1,2,3 system was designed for shelf space, not because they thought it was a great product. They didn't care if anyone bought the primer or whatever they named it, all they wanted was a massive Gatorade presence in the drink aisle. Having 3 products instead of just one tripled the Gatorade on the shelves. Also, when Pepsi bought Quaker Oats in 2001, Gatorade had a 92% market share. While Pepsi might move more units, they've lost a considerable amount of market share.

I drink Gatorade every day, but only what my small thermos can hold, and then I refill it with SUPER cold water from the soda machine at work. It's enough to keep me from feeling too fatigued, keeps my blood sugar from dipping too low, and somehow keeps me from getting extra dehydrated for the rest of the day. If I don't have ANY all day, and just have plain old water, I come home feeling very thirsty, overall tired, and this feeling like I've haven't had enough fluids in my body or something. Also, my mom and discovered that it seems to cure headaches as well, especially from prolonged dehydration.

Working in a factory that got up to +115° F, they would provide Gatorade for us when such conditions occurred. However, we had to drink 2 parts water per 1 part Gatorade, because if you drank only one or the other, in those conditions, it could become troubling. That was the solution they had found from years of experience.
In sports they water down the Gatorade because it has too much sugar.
In the 90s I remember during football 🏈 practice it tasted so good, it was the large packets of power, you added it to a cooler of water. It was not sugary at all, tastes like water with salt and water downed, lemon flavored water. It was so good on a Humid Texas Day. But on a tough practice, iced water or gatorade tasted good.

Oddly.. I don't remember being aware of Gatorade until the late 90's.. I was about 17-19 when I remember having one and I asked the friend I was with if it was new. I do remember the "be like Mike" jingle but for the life of me I had no idea what it was for until I watched this video.
Gatorade is a total win win. I tend to drink six tall boys of Coors Banquets a night and pick up a Gatorade for when I’m aimlessly watching UA-cam videos with a buzz, in the mean time I drink the Gatorade to come back to life after those beers.. after the Gatorade is finished, I now have a “bedside urinal” it’s fantastic.

I was working construction in North Carolina in the summer. On a roof with no hat. This create the stage for heat stroke. I think i had the symptoms for heat stroke, I tried Powerade it didn't help. I then drank a bottle of Gatorade, I noticed the reaction immediately. I like to think Gatorade save my life. I was in my late 40's. GREAT STUFF!!!!!^
I think you should do a video about the disappearance of Mike & Ike. I used to see those candies everywhere back in in the late 2000's and early 2010's and I haven't seen it since. Great video as always

You said that Gatorade was more popular than Powerade and because Pepsi owns Gatorade the round goes to them. I think you are only talking about the US because I don't see a lot or any bottle of Gatorade being sold in Europe (at least in Germany).

I think their rebranding absolutely did NOT hurt them. Hell I didn't even notice when they changed their design. I'd call that a success. The G with the orange lightning bolt is so recognizable that I was never once questioning what the drink was when they i did notice the rebrand.

I once got attacked by a herd of Cambodian water buffalo along with the herdsman and he was drinking Gatorade. Now keep in mind this was in 83. I was drinking water and I got away. He definitely had good endurance along with the Cambodian water buffalo that tired out quickly but I was able to outrun all of them. So it’s hard for me to say Gatorade really makes a difference in a Cambodian Water Buffalo and Herdsman attack. But it is a rather small sample size to go off of. I’m sure it’s happened to plenty of people and I would love to hear what their outcome was. Please share!!!

I've been watching your videos with interest. One small note- the Orange Bowl was the '66 season, the game actually being played in '67. Steve Spurrier won the Heisman that year. If you are looking for a potential alternative variable for Florida, it is likely Spurrier's senior season(who also allowed the team to rise to a perennial power as a coach).

I love Gatorade. In the early 90's a 32oz. bottle would sell for over $2 dollars. Flash forward to 2015 and Grocery stores sometime would offer 10 for $10. I even remember eating Gatorade gum in the 80's. The flavor didn't last very long.

Jordan came later.Jordan was such a marketing machine back then that I forgot the “Be like Mike” was a Gatorade tag line because it could have come from any one of a dozen products he endorsed.
Best of all for Gatorade, that tremendous buzz that the Gatorade shower generated for the company raised it to cultural touchstone for free!!!

Almost 30 years ago when i was a child i remember my parents buying me a 1qt gatorade lemon lime. It was so good! Im not sure if the formula changed but it doesnt taste as good anymore ...

Funny you mentioned Powerade at the beginning, here in Australia, Powerade was the dominant brand probably until around 2010 at least in my experience. Nowadays it’s Gatorade as they’ve gotten sponsorship in out major sports similar to but not on the level of the States.
