  • If we could go back three and a half years ago and change one thing on our homestead, it would be fencing! In today's vlog we share why fencing is so important on the homestead and what fencing we would recommend after years of stress from not having the right fencing.
    If you homestead, what is your favorite kind of fencing?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Welcome to our channel and thank you for taking the time to watch our vlog. We are a family of 8 living in a 500 sq. ft. off grid home on 20 acres in the Ozarks. We are endeavoring to put in "1000's of roots" on our land through permaculture design principles. We try to upload videos Tuesdays and Thursdays.
    Please leave any thoughts or questions you may have in the comments below. We would love to connect with you! And be sure to subscribe and share us with others who may be interested in our videos.
    Thanks again for watching,

    Fencing has definitely been the biggest investment on our homestead! We learned that lesson on our last homestead. Congrats on hitting 1000 subs! It's great to see all of our channels growing. Every channel has something different to offer the community.

    You are protecting your investment. That is what you do, if you live on a great homestead. We live in a small town and have a small backyard garden. And even there the fencing is verry important.
    So I am still watching every video the second time. And to give everything a 👍. I am happy to help you this way because I live in the Netherland/Europe so to buy something from the shop is not profit for you because of postage costs to us.
    G'D BLESS and for now Shabbat Shalom! from Inge Noordam

    Wow!! What a lot of work homestead life looks like! Your family is lovely, but it certainly looks like you guys have your work cut out for you. Very interesting to see what you do all day, and how hard it is on the old western front. Kind of like going back in time 300 years, but with the internet. Glad you are able to show us all how your different life is. Not sure it's for me, but I do enjoy viewing it from afar. Good luck to y'all!

    We had to fence and cross fence two hundred acres. We saved money by using dial-a-trade, craigslist, facebook groups and auctions. Just because you don't spend a lot of money doesn't mean you can't build good fences. We cut a lot of the corner posts off our own property and salvaged telephone poles. Our place was so rocky that most of the corner post holes had to be dug with a rock bar but once they are in they are in three feet deep and tamped hard they don't move.

    I think the fencing could be seen as a spiritual metaphor. You have the best fencing in your spiritual home for your kids =you have created a life where the materialism and self centered-ness of the modern world is kept out. You are teaching your kids to give instead of take, living with a full heart as you say, and keeping out the billions of distractions that clog the arteries of our souls nowadays. True respect and admiration to you both, because this is what truly matters and God will send help for the physical fencing problem.

    I have the same problem with chicken poop in places I don't want it. Free ranging is great and all, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to put an end to that unfortunately. I didn't want to have to do it, but I'm not seeing any other way at the moment. All the chickens LOVE my side porch. It's either fence that porch in, or fence them in.

    With all the challenges you family still loves & works together. what a wonderful blessing. You can't buy happy! Best thing I've found to get rid of the chicken / goose poo around the house and parking area - concrete - has been a snow shovel that was purchased at Walmart the end of winter for $2.00. Would probably work well for chicken poop if cleaned out often. Your fencing issues I understand all too well and suffered great losses because of wild animals going over the tops of pens/coop areas. So frustrating to go out to check on the chickens to find them dead from a skunk, racoon or yes even hawks and the meat wasted. May GOD continue to bless you.

    Wow! A real roots video!! I think most folks never give fencing a thought, especially chicken fencing...those critters can find their way out where you do want them and INTO, where you DON’T!! Yep!! I’m wondering....would a good quality weed wacker make things easier? I see them a lot on Craigslist and most often they don’t run BUT, just need the carb cleaned an fuel line filter (most often in the gas tank) replaced or cleaned. Hang tough Smyth family!!! Absolutely correct. Hated chasing critters to get them back into pen or keeping others out.
    Your cow reminds me of a goat. Full set of horns and able to jump through an 8×12 inch window pane.
    Why do we always get the odd ducks. Lol.
    Cows that think they are deer, chickens that think half dog (I'm family pet go where I want to) and soar like an eagle.
    While the rest of us hang with the turkeys. Lol.
    You are on the right track. Choose your animals and fencing well. Don't have the time to do it right. But you have the time to do it twice or three times. Learned after decades. Work smarter not harder.
    If flying is an issue with chickens, clipping is an option. Always a case by case scenario depending on predator and range.
    Best of luck and God bless.

      @1000sofroots  6 років тому

    in the 70s I milked goats. we had wonderful fence posts(that are still sturdy ) and barbed wire. note barbed wire isn't enough to keep in cows or goats so we put up electric fence. well the goats learnd how to get out. ... so ultimately fencing was the main reason I gave up on goats. about 5 years ago my niece stay with me and she bought two goats I built a barn fixed the fence and now I have three yard ornament goats. this year I have been letting them run loose they ate all my flowers but I didn't even care I like my goats and I'm happy that I can lock them in when I need to. they have done a pretty good job on the weeds but 5 acres is more than they can handle. so next year we are going to raise at least two pigs to " stir the land"

    • @1000sofroots
      @1000sofroots  6 років тому

      Love the way you phrased that, "stir the land". We need more land stirring here at our place, but need the right fencing first.

    Great information on fencing! Thank you. You are living a 4H program... in real time! I have one question (unrelated): are your older children adjusting well with the changes from urban to farm life? Do they have free time to roam? I can see your littles are happy but am wondering about the older ones. Did you go through what they call the "honeymoon" period while adjusting?

    • @1000sofroots
      @1000sofroots  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the encouragement! Our older children haven't experienced much urban life that they can remember. We have lived in small towns most of their lives. As with anything new, there was a honeymoon period in the beginning. The first year on our land was full of new places to explore, new people to meet, and new experiences of many kinds. Now, our three older boys spend much of their time helping with chores and projects, and homeschooling, but they get plenty of free time to ride bikes, do archery, hike up the creek, do handicrafts, blacksmith, etc. They are also gaining interest in vlogging and may start to do more vlogs on our channel in the future. Hope that answers you questions. Have a great weekend! - Carrie

    Sorry you have the fencing blues. Sometimes here in New Hampshire, we can pick up decent used fencing. Are you able to put out a request through the Farm Bureau or similar organizations, like Young Farmers of America? Not sure what you have for a farming network in your area. We have a Concord, NH Farmer's Market Bulletin to sell and place want ads. Also grain store bulletin boards, etc. or Craig's List. Good to voice your fencing needs on UTUBE as well. We like to trade and barter to save money / old school rural in our area. Our Herefords do sometimes get out. We move fence a lot on 350 acres. Are your geese Pilgrim geese? Nice breed. I raised American Standard Toulouse and loved them! I used to wet hatch in a 400 egg Sears redwood incubator with 98% hatch rate. Lots of fun! Getting stressed means that you care...will look for your Q&A section.
