    Elburglaan 4 Eindhoven
De Wielewaal. It’s one of the most famous and expensive estates in The Netherlands. Perfect place for someone who loves the serenity of the countryside and the thrill of city life. ‘We were privileged to live in such a magical place’, the previous owner Guy Lomas affirms. That about says it all.
The villa bares the name De Kwikstaart (The Wagtail). Although the house is relatively new (2001), it is located on an estate with a very rich history and great significance for the city of Eindhoven. Anton Philips, who built the success of the well-known electronics multinational, bought the forest area in 1912 and set it up as the De Wielewaal estate. In 1934, his son and later company president Frits Philips built a grand mansion on the estate that everyone in Eindhoven knows. Around the turn of the millennium, 4 more villas were built on the east side of the estate. De Kwikstaart is one of them. After the death of Frits Philips in 2005, the estate was sold to a Dutch entrepreneur. It was put on the market again in 2016. In February 2022 the municipality of Eindhoven bought the estate. A historic deal. The city paid 29 million euros for De Wielewaal and will turn it into a public park from 2025. The east side of the estate, where De Kwikstaart is, will remain private.
    The countryside in the city
‘I remember when I first parked my car in front of the cast iron gates of De Wielewaal. The gates opened. Wow. Complete serenity. Grandeur. What a view!’ Says Guy Lomas. The international marketing director from Great Britain continued his successful career in The Netherlands and was looking for an inspiring place for himself and his family to live: ‘I would have bought a top floor apartment in the city, to be honest. Love the urban life. But my wife wanted to be in the countryside, surrounded by forest and animals, and my daughter wanted to be near the international school, so she could safely bike on her own. So we searched for the perfect mix. You know what? We got it.
    Central Park of Eindhoven
Guy bought De Kwikstaart in 2019 from Maria Philips, Frits’ daughter. Although the property is located in the middle of the woods of De Wielewaal, the city buzz is nearby, says Guy: ‘If you live on this side of De Wielewaal, you have direct access to the roads leading straight into the city. A railway station is also nearby. So you can really be that person who breathes fresh air and have privacy and trees, and be in trendy Strijp-S, the city center or Eindhoven Airport in no time. You have this great sense of isolation, but actually you’re in the city. It’s like living in Central Park of Eindhoven.’
    Renovated every single room
Although De Kwikstaart looks like an old house, it is actually modern, Guy says: ‘This might be the biggest secret of the property. It’s only 20 years old. But the build quality is excellent. The woodwork, the marquetry, the finishes. Attention to detail is fantastic. Still, it was a bit outdated. So we have renovated every single room. All the floors, the tiling, the bathrooms. Almost everything is new. But we kept the authentic details to maintain the history of the place. In the lounge we stripped back the whole new floor for the original floor, because it was lovely. For the interior styling we chose to complement the double nature of this house as a private sanctuary and a gateway to the city: it’s a mix of the country cottage style and the industrial look of Strijp-S. Like the Hoxton hotel in London and Amsterdam. I love it.’
    Many extras
With 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a large basement, the house is ideal for a large family. And Guy added many extras to it: ‘We’ve built a cinema room, a bar and music room, a utility room, extra windows for the views and complete new decking on the veranda. During Covid we also created an office and a kids office. And since we couldn’t go to the gym because of the pandemic, we built our own gym here. We also created a swimming pool with a swim spa system in it, so you can swim forever, a hot tub, a quality garage for my classic MG and an art studio and kids hideaway in the forest.’ Technically the house is also superb, says Guy: ‘A lot of thought went into the design of the central heating system. The underfloor heating and radiators are exactly in the right places and are future-proof. We also hardly need to heat the basement. Another cool thing is the central vacuum cleaning system. It’s fantastic!’
