- Seattle sits on the type of ground that would amplify the effects of an earthquake. Scientists can't offer a firm prediction when the next one will happen... only the certainty that it will.

I was in 1st grade living in Gig Harbor when the earthquake happened. We were in the middle of class and all sitting at our desks when everything in the room started shaking.
I’ll always remember how well my first grade teacher handled the situation. Calmly, she just exclaimed “Oop, earthquake everyone! Everyone get under your desks,” as if we were just starting a new activity. She kept us all very calm.
What school did you go to?
I love Seattle!!! Beautiful city and amazing seafood.
Why thank you
Not anymore homeless everywhere
@@40caltone People get what they vote for or tolerate...
Not anymore 🥲 people moving in, houses getting expensive, and tax is getting stupidly high
Now, it looks like 💩
Who's here form the Seattle 4.7 earthquake?
yep i woke up to it last night lol. didnt even know what was going on at first
Yup. It took me a minute to register what was happening and when I realized it was an earthquake I headed upstairs and hid under the kitchen table. Then I tried to comfort my totally terrified cats.
Anisa Dahir me xD
But I just slept through it
Anisa Dahir me

Must be a wierd feeling living in Seattle knowing there's such a high risk of the entire city being distroyed in the next few decades 😨
It is lol
Yeah... It is..lol
Would this be on the scale of the Hanshin earthquake of 1995?
Actually their is a low chance of the whole city to get destroyed
@@SylveonMujigaeOfficial probably will be a combination of the 1995 quake and the more recent palu quake which caused many deaths from liquefaction and the resulting tsunami.
The main risks in Seattle would probably be landslides and liquefaction. Basically turning the ground to liquid and worst case scenario the suburban hillside neighborhoods and most of port will slide into the bay.
Look up footage of the Palu earthquake and you'll gain a pretty good picture of what might happen in an area like Seattle built on sediment deposits from the mountains.
I remember this 😐 I was in second grade and my mom worked downtown in pioneer square and was stuck forever!
I was in second grade too.
I waa in preschool. I remember the teacher telling us to get under the table.
I never knew about that one. They say if there's a 6.0 or bigger off the coast dont wait for tsunami warnings just run because there will be no time for a warning.
LOL, the guy's eating and he's like walking away chill style.
I was a mile from the epicenter for this and, though I grew up in So. Cal. and was used to earthquakes, the difference was unnerving.
I was used to abrupt, shaking and loud. What happened that day was like being on a ship in high seas with no sound at all, just the undulating ground and the sound of the houses and trees around me groaning and swaying.
They say the quake was only a few minutes but, being so close the the source, it lasted a good ten minutes or longer o.O
Scot Crawford yikes. Thanks for relating your experience. Very interesting to hear from someone who was actually there.
We get a different type of earthquake here called a strike-slip earthquake. This happens when two tectonic plates collide and rub against each other in the upper mantle. They don't cause as much noise as the kind you get in California, but boy, they do make you gallop. Olympia, which lies directly across the Puget Sound from the epicenter, moved 20 feet north, fracturing the 4th and 5th avenue bridges.
Yeah, subduction earthquakes feel waaaaay different. That earthquake felt like the ground had turned into a trampoline that someone else was jumping up and down on.
@@soundautomatic1 For sure. Right before it hit, he ran out the door to come get me from school because our family dog started spinning in circles, and, having been raised on a farm, he had seen cattle do that before earthquakes, so he knew something was about to happen. It hit right as he was leaving, and he was thrown from his vehicle.
It wasn't 10minutes. I was here too.. maybe a minute.
My city... Everyday is a blessing
I lived in Eastern Washington at the time of this disaster. Even that far away it felt like we were rocking back and forth on a boat
Yes.. I was living in Spokane was in class at Spokane Falls Community College and we felt it. Felt like a boat.
I finally know why Frasier has left the building
I remember this one, we felt it when I lived in Chilliwack, too.
I live in Portland and felt it. I will always remember it because it was our anniversary.
Mount Rainer
I remember this earthquake and I live across the puget sound from Seattle. Even my dad and stepmother felt it in Clark County. My half sister wasn't born until August of that year.
City government knows about that but they build tunnel anyway
Haha my mom told me I was asleep during this! I was one and I live in Bremerton
I was at pier 36 (uscg base) when it happened. I watched my weld shop (built over an old pier) split in half and the weld table fell in the water below!
But rainier tho....ive tried climbing that behemoth....its definitely to be respected...hopefully the recent quake didn’t disturb its sleep
Doubt a 4.7 would do anything. But a Cascadia 9.0 with a tsunami special? Yeah, that's a different story.
I was at the skatepark skateboarding then I felt shaking and then their was cement breaking out the bowl and then I was running for my life
I was in the city of Seatac when the quake hit. It was pretty cool.
Yikes
I dont think u were born
I was in my apartment on Capitol Hill, lights went out, but just a few cracks to the building.
@@josepaco8907 wow lol
I remember this day like it happened yesterday. I was at Jennie Reed elementary in Tacoma and after all the earthquake drills we went thru, my teacher was the only one freaken out with her hands in the air lookin everywhere wonderin what was goin on while me and all the 4th grade students were already under our desks screamin to her to get under her desk.
Yes! Jennie Reed. My mom went there. I grew up in Gig Harbor. I was I. 6th grade and I kinda thought it was fun 😅🤷🏻♂️
@@tylorkelley4766 thats awesome haha what a small world
I was in 3rd grade in my classroom in Leavenworth Washington when this earthquake struck. And the best part? Feb 28th is my birthday. What a gift to get for your birthday. I had nightmares for weeks.
LEAVENWORTH IS THE BEST OMG UR LUCKY TO LIVE THERE THOUGH!
My birthday is on Feb 21
I remember this I was in Elm school on air base I was at lunch eating and that happen I hate it
Ill never forget it, it was really a rolling quake, not super violent.
Frank Gonzales tsunami expert worked for NOAA at this time. 2:23 He's a nice guy.
Im moving back to washington for college and i am extremely scared of earthquakes. I lived in South Korea 15-16, and it was the first time i ever experienced large earthquakes (2, one was one of the largest SK ever got in recorded history). I hope I will be overcome my fear, but something about the earth being taken from my feet and me not being able to do anything about it is terrifying...
This happened on my 21st birthday. I remember it well
This is the shrek comment you’ve been looking for
I remember this earthquake - I felt it in Victoria. It was moving day for me - and I was concerned the boxes would fall on me.
I was in kindergarten and slept through it. about 30 minute drive from Seattle.
I remember this. I was in middle school, just left the cafeteria and wondered why the trees were moving when there wasn't any wind.
your missing that Seattle is in washington
People forget about Olympia. We had the worst damage of all. According to Wikipedia, Olympia jumped 20 feet north that day.
Actually tho the Cascadia (aka the big one) is gonna be a bit more damaging in Portland.
I wanna move to Montana
@@hi-xe9ry Yellowstone supervolcano is there

@130starfish we get earthquakes a lot too. the whole west coast does.
Well, don’t blame Texas, it wasn’t our fault!
nice
I remember this quake I was in my college math class on the 6th floor when it hit
They know this an yet seattle keeps building and growing. Recently Mount Rainer Mt Hood an Mt St Helens and areas nearby have been shaking
Nice way to wake up :D
Greetings from California.
There’s also the Cascadia Subduction Fault in the Pacific Ocean
If this fault line ruptures; Eugene OR, Salem OR, Portland OR, Olympia WA, Tacoma WA, Seattle WA, and Vancouver Bc, Canada would be royally screwed beyond belief. The earthquake would probably be just as strong as the infamous magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan and would generate a devastating tsunami.
I was here for this, ha! 2nd grade actually. :)
I never felt a earthquake and I live very near Seattle.
You must not have been there in 2001.
I remember this
@gavinpop Yes - basically it is the water between the islands off the coast of Washington and Seattle.
NINTENDO 64! OH MY GOOOOD!!!!
I remember hearing the Earthquake thinking initially it was my Washer out of Balance..Then I opened my front door and stood in the doorwell..Ironically our dogs were right on my tail. I went outside to check on my daughter playing in neighbors yard and seen there windows look like plastic rippling..
It stopped and asked my daughter if she was OK which she was w neighbor. Called my school where I worked as a Custodian and made sure they were all ok...Pretty scary for sure..)
I love in Tacoma great place
I live right next to Seattle
@iFoxyFox puget sound? is connected to the pacific ocean?
Mt Rainier [ volcano ]
about 80 miles from Seattle...
where ya gonna run ?
I love seattle
well they already have that sound machine that scans already, how much does that machine cost?
saw that opening shot....was thinking.....that is a worn down looking area
0:33 That looked like George Lucas
My parents were working at their offices in Redmond (where the buildings literally swayed!) and I didn’t exist yet. And my house is on that sediment bowl 😳
that is not major (major is lots of building flat!)
@CrazyCrystalLuv ok, ty
the natural phenomena (plural) is so cool and yet so scary
what do you think?
@oxidindigo 6.7, i remember it too
>.< I thought this video was about the recent Wash, DC earthquake
I was in the needle yesterday having dinner when it fell to the ground. I was slightly hurt!
Lol
0:19 we got em
@GordanMFreeman falling debris, sinkholes, tsunami, etc etc. the woman who died was old and died from a heart attack
Why is video called "Washington Quake" if it's about Seattle?? Or am I missing something?
I was 2 year old now I’m 9 but my family moved to Sunnyside
@FlipUpCoconutKing you mean 5 earthquakes, 1 in D.C., 1 in Colorado, 2 in Cali, 1 in Peru
this like really scares me.
I searched for January 2001 Earthquake at Gujarat, India on Republic Day of India 01/26/2001
Till remember this...ahh 5th grade.
The Asian at 3:10 was like "Are you really freaking out over this?"
Who’s here from Oregon Earthquake 6.3 in the Pacific Ocean
"Fortunately, there was just one death" wow. could you say that any nicer?
I live right under one of the bigges5 fault lines in the state
Ok, I live in Washington and I didn't know there was earthquakes here.
About every 30-50 years for moderate 6 or 7's,,, every 200-600 years for a 9+. It's been 321 since the last 9+. It sounds scary, but if you're smart... It really isn't. 99.997% survive just fine. Just stay away from bricks and glass and unreinforced concrete buildings. Wood (houses) usually do ok.
Peru Earthquake today(August 24th), NG comes out with another earthquake vid. Predatory adverticing.
@somegalfromcan uh yeah, i know. i was responding too another person. i live in seattle
@snowbal12345 elementary school education... where? in america? oh, wait, i've never been there!! how surprising is that?
Might be easier to accept if they actually pronounced city and major River names correctly.
Oh well, I looked at an earthquake map for east of Portland. Looks like we are ok here in Sandy, OR.
Everymountain (continent) and islandwill be moved out of their places before the Sixth Seal appearance of the Lord. The mountains and islands will be adrift.
This is the final event of the Fourth Seal.
That is the exact effect of a coming Magnetic Pole shift when the crust of the earth slips around the core and all the continents will be dislocated and swim upon the sea all broken up
thumbs up if u were in the east coast earthquake yesterday
I was in math class when this happened.
I was also in math when it happened!
Fortunately only one death?! Bruh it should be “Sadly there was one death” or “Unfortunately there was one death”
The Famous 6.8 magnitude earthquake
Those sound wave harm and kill ocean life.
Still waiting for the big one
0:19 Launching Windows XP
It's Windows Whistler not Windows XP. Because Windows XP was release on October 25 2001

@BowWow452 lol ikr!
And I was going to move to Seattle. Forget that. Wyoming here I come. Rather be frozen than quaking.
We don't get earthquakes often so your fine
But you will get a Yellowstone eruption.
why does this look like it was videoed in the 80's?
my dad survived that earth quake and he was ALONE
