I think how this team meshes and blends will be key. The way they handle the non-conference portion of the season will speak volumes. I don't look at the preseason hype nor do I put too much pressure on Cadeau. He will have some growing pains, especially on the road. But he will prevail. Having RJ beside him will help along with Paige helping will be beneficial. Having several experienced players mixed with Davis and Bacot may be a nice component to have going against these heavyweights early on. Its a wait and see type thing.
I've definitely ignored all preseason rankings and predictions after what happened last season. I'm eager to see the guys play and see how I feel about the team after that. However, I'm all for the media over hyping Duke because we all know how well that always work out for them.
I personally think Hubert has done a phenomenal job putting together pieces from the transfer portal and HS recruiting. this team should be vastly improved.
How about we let them play a few games first. If we learned anything from last year it should be to put very little credence or importance on pre season rankings. I expect to see a group that will play hard and hopefully reach their goals and potential. That's it. They have to gel. They have to learn to play together as a team and that only comes with time. It ain't sexy but it's true. If the pieces fall into place quickly that's great. If not, give them time but temper expectations. Here's hoping for the best! Go Tar Heels!!!
Hopefully duke returning players don’t mesh together with the freshman or each other. Remember when we had 4 returning players last year. It’s not a guarantee
Did you have a chance to watch the alumni game and if you did what are you thoughts on it? After watching it (and I know that it's only one unofficial game) but I think that Jaelyn Withers has the edge over Ingram for the four spot. At least on a game to game basis... I know on some nights it will make since to tinker with the starting line up. Do you agree?
Cadeau will give Bacot 2-3 easy baskets per game. If 3 pt shooting is better (as expected), Mando will have fewer slow back downs and will rely more on quicker post moves. I’m thinking about 18 ppg.
Don't mean to be pessimistic, but this squad kind of reminds me of the 2021 carolina Panthers. Matt Rhule brought in all these players from losing teams (many from the jets) and thought he could win games with them. The team was at the bottom of the league that year. These new players are not the caliber players unc is known for except Cadeu. But Cadeu is a freshman. I still don't think this kid is going to be the "golden boy" everyone says without development and time. Ty lawson was ranked higher than cadeu and it took him 3 years to lead our offense affectively. And we had stars all the way around him. We lost better players in the transfer portal than the ones we gained. How we think we're going to be able to compete in the acc is beyond me. It's not rocket science. Maybe I'm missing something other people see.
Here’s what I think you are missing: Portal - Carolina got more from the portal than was lost. Only Love was a starter and he shot 30% from 3 and 38% overall - disastrous numbers for the player taking the most shots on the team. Puff was a good player in spots but didn’t stay healthy enough to really get on a roll. None of the others contributed much, partly because Hubert didn’t play them much but they also didn’t earn more time based on how they played when they got in games. Ryan, Withers, and Ingram were starters on programs in major conferences, Wojcik in the Ivy. All have more experience and better numbers than what we lost, except Love who had extremely high usage. Then there is Cadeau. The first time I saw video of him (2 years ago), I immediately noticed he had incredible court vision. Best I can recall seeing. He makes the game so much easier for his teammates. He doesn’t have the quickness of Lawson (which took Ty a couple years to learn how to use effectively) and is not the scorer some other Carolina guards have been. But his court vision is at least as good as Kendall Marshall’s, and Cadeau is a better shooter and quicker than Marshall was. Last year, Caleb and RJ each averaged about 3 app. I expect Cadeau to be in the 8-10 app range.
@TL-175 I just remember everyone talking about cole anthony like that, and he had one game where he went off and scored 30 points. I recon I'm spoiled being a Tarheel fan. I've been used to expecting unc to always have these 27 to 30+ game winning seasons, which usually went to at least a final four appearance. Things have been so unstable that you don't know what to expect with the team. All of our championships came from players who meshed over years playing and growing together. Hopefully, they will find chemistry ⚗️. I'm rooting for Hube
@@scottworley1479 The team with Cole Anthony was weak - the other starters were Garrison Brooks, Bacot (FR), Leaky (SO) and Brandon Robinson. Plus there was little help off the bench as grad transfers Keeling and Pierce never did much. Anthony was strong at getting to the hoop, but very right dominant and defenses adjusted. He was never a great shooter or passer. He also rarely got a call when he got clobbered going to the hoop or maybe that was just what I saw. UNC lost a lot from the previous year - Coby White, Nassir Little, Cam Johnson, Luke May, Kenny Williams - Brooks was the only returning starter. Plus Anthony got hurt in Dec. and missed 11 games. He was never the same after wards both physiucally and fitting in with the team. Cadeau joins a team with experienced Bacot and RJ plus 4 multi-year starters from other teams, so he won't be asked to score just set the table whichis what he does best. He's a next level passer that really sees the floor and not just what is happening but what is going to happen. I expect the offense to be fine as we added 4 good shooters. My main concern is defense. We no longer have a bonafide stopper like Leaky. My guess is that this team will gel into a good defensive TEAM, working together better than last year's team.
@TL-175 true, I'm going to be optimistic. It could be one of the best years we've had in years. I sometimes try to analyze. These days, though the game has changed so much, you just don't know what to expect with the transfer portal and new rules. Back in the day, we always kinda knew what to expect. We always had a good rotation of players and upperclassmen who knew the system and played several years together to lead the young, talented freshman. And occasionally, we had a talented group of 5 star upperclassmen who wanted to stay and win a championship. I just don't know about these new players. They weren't stars where they were, other than maybe the guy from notre dame. The rest of them had mediocre or bad stats at their former team. I hope they will gel together besides what I say or think.
Carolina is going to be everything we expect, and more. With the addition of Cadeau to all of our other experience, they're going to be fun to watch.
