I increased my protein intake to 85-100+ grams from about 65 grams after watching Neisha Berry and Kim Howerton on a FB Live talk about hair loss, stalls on keto, and thyroid hormones. Hi Amy, as always, thanks for sharing all of your knowledge! You mentioned corticosteroids may cause weight gain or interfere with weight loss. Are you only referring to them in the form of pills or does that include topical creams or ointments? I have psoriasis and use the ointment for my skin a few times/week. Thanks!
I'm not sure about the topical creams, but I know it's true for the steroid nasal sprays. I suspect the topical creams are probably less likely to cause an issue, but I'm not sure. Maybe ask your doctor, or look up the potential side effects of the particular drug you're using.
I love your videos so much. I have lost 70 lbs in the past 10 months and my health has improved so much. I'm aiming now to reduce joint pain and inflammation. Quick question, can keto help women with uterine myomas? It's so painful...
I am stalled. I think. My next step is cutting out cheese and butter. Possibly the bacon. Might be adding some liver, if I can manage to choke it down. I probably haven't eaten liver in 40 years.
Space Ghost try chicken livers sautéed in butter, gently, add cream and chives, pink salt and pepper. Not as jarring to the taste as stronger liver. Oh and I’d probably add a little garlic too. Let me know how it goes! Bon appetite! .
16 weeks strict keto no weight loss some gain. the last few weeks Im having worsening hypo symptoms. . I have mycotoxins that may be messing with me. take welchol and binders. Im afraid to eat. previous cal restriction affected my metabolism. I eat a VERY healthy diet. perhaps I should just hope to maintain
As I see it ,unless I am wrong, when we eat a meal or a food the body is seeing a mixture of food and doesn't for example see a steak, broccoli etc but a ground up mixture of these items. If that is the case and we add a lot of fat to a bagel for example why does the body not see this mixture as a low glycemic index food mixture. Is it because it may take too much fat to offset the carb type food.
Help Amy! I've been seeing some keto people (Kamp Keto etc.) saying that women need a carb up day once a week to keep thyroid healthy and not reduce metabolism. I'm skeptical that I can stay in ketosis if one day each week I consume 50-100g carbs.
Wow! You are putting out great information and keeping it factual. Could you create a video on the subject of why high fat low carb could be better than low fat high carb. Noticed that you mentioned the high fat high carb combo "SAD diet" is a metabolic nightmare. I realize you concentrate on keto but these are serious questions. Restricted calorie regime can result in weight loss - but is this ketosis? Low fat high carb can result in weight loss "The Starch Solution" - but is this ketosis? High protien low carb "Atkins" can result in weight loss - but is this ketosis? Dr. Ted Naiman has indicated that either HFLC or HCLF will give good results but he thinks HFLC is better. Does fat burning take place only when in ketosis? Maybe you could point me in the right direction to answer these questions. Again, thanks for your time and willingness to share. Also, do you count net carbs or total carbs?
I am totally stalled. I eat nearly zero carbs. IDK what to do next. I can't envision eating even less. I'm hungry now and it's nowhere near time to eat yet. Right now I may unplug my TV. I just don't sleep enough laying in bed watching TV. Maybe that's part of it. I cut out all cheeses a few weeks ago. I just eat mostly ribeyes now. Sigh...
i tried to buy your book on amazon - the kindle version tried and it wouldn't work. cancelled. uninstalled kindle. reinstalled kindle. rebought, retried, still couldn't get it to work :(
No, you don't have to fully cut dairy; just don't overdo it. If you're asking for what to eat, see here and craft meals out of a protein and some low-carb vegetables: www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/foods#foodlist It's not difficult, I promise.
@@amyberger-ketowithoutthecrazy I bought spareribs, and steak, too, which I think you may have mentioned in another video. :D I have some questions, but I understand if you don't have time to answer them: 1. Is the relationship between fat burning and carb intake more linear, or does it really take a huge jump when one enters ketosis? I already think the ketosis number must be somewhat arbitrary, as it probably varies by person. 2. Are there studies on LCHF with respect to PTSD/CPTSD? My hypothesis - trauma leads to high carb ("comfort food") eating in some people leading to brain fog and other PTSD symptoms. 3. How did you manage graduate school for nutrition while (probably) being taught within the old paridigm? I know you are probably busy, so I don't necessarily expect you to answer these, but possibly ideas for future videos? Either way, I really appreciate your videos as they are science based but presented in a very understandable way. Thanks!

Hi Amy, have you been watching videos from Dr Darren Schmidt? One of his latest (ua-cam.com/video/-J_Tm_5v050/v-deo.html) is a summary with great slides of a much longer talk, where he expresses some really interesting ideas (his and others) on keto, and protein in particular, not the usual run on protein since he leans slightly more to carnivore these days. I loved it and I think you will find it really interesting. cheers.
Wow, wait 8 weeks of no weight loss before it’s considered a stall. I will be more patient then. I was disappointed if the scale didn’t move every day.
I do not agree with the exercise called sarcopenia muscle mass, something must be done to help with muscle glycogen and liver expenditure improve aerobic capacity and generate good hormones for the body
A more realistic definition of a "stall" is three weeks with no loss of weight nor measurements. By "measurements," that means your complete body measurements, as in neck, chest, waist, hips, both arms, and both thighs. It is highly, highly, highly unlikely that this combined measurement would not change for 12 weeks for anyone following keto.
Becky, Dr. Westman warns against the invention of only counting net carbs. For most of us on keto this false constrct just does not help us lose weight. There are vegies naturally lower in total carbs and a few fruits like berries. I would suggest looking into Dr Westman's Page 4, which is a list of strict Keto foods. Good luck.
I am watching this vlog because I wanted to find out how to stop losing weight. I started eating this way to stabilize my blood sugars. However I don't need to lose weight in fact I would like to gain a few pounds. I dont like feeling bony. Any suggestions for someone for me?
Stay within the carb limit, but increase fats & more importantly protein grams to increase calorie amount so your NOT in a calorie deficit. Be in a calorie surplus. Added protein helps you keep muscle mass. Chose your fats wisely.
Colin Nordström if you absolutely have to go on medication, yes. But it’s best to Keto yourself to pre diabetes ; there are downsides to being on medication, not least your driving licence!

I feel much better than before I am very low carb. Somewhere in the range of 50 or below most days I am also going lower now and only eating meats and fats I can not lose weight Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks Michelle
I am on a medication for bipolar disorder, and have been on it since 2008. I gained an insane amount in a very short period of time, and then steadily kept gaining and gaining, until I had gained 103 lbs. I have lost 5 lbs just from killing it at the gym, and another 9 since I started keto. I had tried Weight Watchers, whole foods plant based, raw veganism, but I just couldn't stick with any of those long term, and I was still craving sugar like crazy. Only since starting healthy keto according to Dr. Berg have I been able to get past the horrible sugar cravings. One medication I am on is now known to put people at a high risk of developing diabetes, and for me it dramatically increased my sugar and carb cravings. I hope that as I continue with keto I might be able to decrease the amount of that medication.
First let me tell you what a great pedogog you are ! Question : I have been doing IF with Keto for 2 months. ,started at 130 lbs ,5’4 , 65 years old. Started this firstly to get out of brain fog ,hypervigilence, hypoglycemic crahes etc. I was happy to lost 5-7 pounds. I am now 118 pounds. Contradictly to most, I am a bit worry about loosing too much. Will it stop soon ?.😣🤔 I feel satiated ,but should I eat more anyway ? Thank you for answering....if you can
Make sure you're eating enough when you do eat. How much fasting are you doing? Make sure you're not unintentionally eating far too little to maintain your weight.
Wow! You answered sooo rapidly!! Thank you. I do eat a lot . Bacon, protein, eggs avocados etc I eat twice a day ...fasting 20 -4. I much appreciated your response,
@@ginettelalonde735 If you only have a 4 hour eating window, it's unlikely you're consuming enough total energy within that time to maintain weight. Consider eating 3 rimes a day, or at least opening the window to 8 hours if not more.
Depends on individual carb tolerance. Many people can consume more carbs and not have a massive insulin response like someone else would. You don't have to be in ketosis to lose fat. You can be burning fat and have a fat-based metabolism without having elevated ketones. Read about that here: www.tuitnutrition.com/2017/09/measuring-ketones.html
This is valuable and helpful. Thank you again! I'm on keto for managing T2D, hypertension, and generally it just helps me feel my best. But if I can keep my insulin/blood sugar normal, the weight comes off. I'm back on Metformin bc even though I haven't changed much, my blood sugars are stubborn. I thought I had been in remission, but it wasn't apparently low enough yet (keto only, no meds, after a few months, my BG went down) now they're back up.
I have several friends with the same issues/symptoms after starting keto with initial success. The ones that tried fasting have broken through the plateau. If you have not tried it, view some of Dr. Jason Fung's videos here on UA-cam.
Thanks for watching. BG can be up and down for lots of reasons, not always diet, although diet will have the biggest effect. Is it only your morning sugars that are high, or multiple times during the day, too?
It would've been really hard for me to keep it that short. I have some big topics to get through, but then, as I mentioned, I'll move on to more minor issues that can be covered more succinctly.
@@amyberger6169 too much minutiae, or reputation. Notice others agree with me? Your videos are usually good...just don't d-r-a-g it out just too fiill time.
I've been binge watching you're videos and agree with many of your ideas...until you said that weight loss is a hormone issue not a calorie issue. Totally WRONG. Don't care what anyone says, weight loss is conducive to calorie restriction. Hormone issues are acquired because of all the years of abusing the body with poor eating habits. Stop blaming hormones & suck up the truth & pay the piper. That's exactly why so many of those conditions are corrected when you stop eating all the crap that got you there in the first place.

😁 So happy you’re doing more videos‼️
You are awesome, really helpful, love love love.
I could listen to you all day!!! Do you have a podcast I can subscribe to ?
No, but I just started a mailing list because I'm going to be sending out newsletters...See here for details: tuitnutrition.us13.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=11e7d14c480b525e5280d0fde&id=4f8d0781b7
And thanks for watching! :)
I was a mail carrier. I had lots of muscle, but never lost weight.
Amy please do a video on low blood pressure on keto and IF
A topic I totally agree with you on
Good content
I would like the link to the article about keto being good for arterioscerosis that you mentioned.
@@amyberger-ketowithoutthecrazythank you very much 🙏
I love your videos so much. I have lost 70 lbs in the past 10 months and my health has improved so much. I'm aiming now to reduce joint pain and inflammation. Quick question, can keto help women with uterine myomas? It's so painful...
Thank you
thanks, best from London, uk
Really helpful!
I only know you via Twitter. Great Videos.👏
Bon appetite! .
I was expecting alcohol to be one of the five, great content though Amy and half an hour to me is an ideal length for the videos.
Yes, I totally forgot about alcohol, and you're right -- it's a big one! I've already recorded a brief follow-up to this where I mention alcohol.
Thank you so much xxx
so good, thanks
I have cortisol issues too because of coffee drinking
What about cortezone creams or mucinexD?
Help Amy! I've been seeing some keto people (Kamp Keto etc.) saying that women need a carb up day once a week to keep thyroid healthy and not reduce metabolism. I'm skeptical that I can stay in ketosis if one day each week I consume 50-100g carbs.
Amy. Relax. Slow down.
Now that I know people don't mind longer videos, yes, I can take my time a little and not feel like I have to rush.
Only slightly frenetic at 1.75x play back speed imo
My band Director from high school went to Duquesne university
Sigh...
i tried to buy your book on amazon - the kindle version
tried and it wouldn't work. cancelled. uninstalled kindle. reinstalled kindle.
rebought, retried, still couldn't get it to work :(
What would be breakfast lunch and dinner plans .. for fat loss.. is it necessary to fully cut dairy and cheeses for weight loss?
No, you don't have to fully cut dairy; just don't overdo it. If you're asking for what to eat, see here and craft meals out of a protein and some low-carb vegetables: www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/foods#foodlist It's not difficult, I promise.
0:52 * adds spareribs to shopping list *
They were delicious!
@@amyberger-ketowithoutthecrazy I bought spareribs, and steak, too, which I think you may have mentioned in another video. :D
I have some questions, but I understand if you don't have time to answer them:
Thanks!
@@KeepQuestioning243 Lots to reply to here. Please send me an email privately instead and I can answer. Better/easier for me that way. You can even just copy & paste what you've written here into an email: tuitnutrition@gmail.com (And I went to a very progressive and forward-thinking school with regard to nutrition, so I didn't have to deal with the old paradigm, but I can explain more by email.)
19:17 Can going on estrogens for someone who previously had high testosterone (because of testicles, not PCOS) cause gainage?
How many carbs do you recommend a day.
Likely 20 g or less.
People say meat is bad for you idk how people do so well on keto and low carb? I am one of those people lol. My body hates carbs and makes me fat
People are wrong, meat isn’t bad for you.
Meat isn't bad for you. Keep calm and keto on.
Jim at BEATING OBESITY gave you a plug, "I'M THE OMAD MAN, From the planet of "Omadia" Thanks for the great info.
So you know more than Stephen Phinney? Really?
i’ve gotten to lose 30 pounds in just about a month! if you guys need advice feel free to ask
Are their any vegetables that the carbs dont count?
That is a nonsensical statement.
Metformin activates the AMPK pathway: seems to be the best diabetes med on the market
Colin Nordström if you absolutely have to go on medication, yes. But it’s best to Keto yourself to pre diabetes ; there are downsides to being on medication, not least your driving licence!
Please take your time with your videos , Amy. Don't turn into the sensationalist clickbait under-ten minute crap that infests this site.
Thank you! Good to know people appreciate substantive content. I don't like clickbait either, but I have to admit, sensationalist headlines often get me to click on other people's videos. I'm definitely not marketing savvy, but I'll always try to provide information that *matters.* :) Thanks again for the comment.
@@amyberger6169 Oh I fall for it sometimes to and then am annoyed with myself for clicking on it but I really appreciate people like you that provide top quality content. :)
@@amyberger6169 Personally I ignore all science related videos that are under 15min. Sure, I will watch a 7min video of cute puppy's. But it is way to short for important stuff.
I want to.do keto im 78 kg and 1.80cm. I cant afford losing weight at all
I recently had a pituitary gland tumor removed
It slowed my thyroid and shut down my cortisol
I am now on two thyroid meds and hydrocortisone replacement meds.
I feel much better than before
I am very low carb. Somewhere in the range of 50 or below most days
I am also going lower now and only eating meats and fats
I can not lose weight
Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks

Stop the Depakote if you can.
Again thanks a lot and I wish you a Happy Healhty Keto New Year :0
How then do people who do none-keto low carb (50-200 grams carbs) lose weight?
Depends on individual carb tolerance. Many people can consume more carbs and not have a massive insulin response like someone else would. You don't have to be in ketosis to lose fat. You can be burning fat and have a fat-based metabolism without having elevated ketones. Read about that here: www.tuitnutrition.com/2017/09/measuring-ketones.html
I like your web page :)
Nice video. Personally, I think the "you can eat unlimited fat on keto"-guys are quiet funny XD . But I miss the promised links ;-) .
The links are in the pinned comment.

CMU!
30? I get made if I go over 5
But this means chicken meat is best for losing weight?
NO.
Amy are going to LowCarb Houston?
Would have been better as 10 minute video.
