    We deploy synology. We constantly are amazed by how much they can pull off with such a modest price tag. When we need it the support is also there. There is one feature, high availability, that really doesn’t work well but the basics of the software are great. I wouldn’t use it as storage to back my database and run a datacenter but for the small enterprises it’s fine.
    We have 150 person teams working off 22 rack units of synology. It really works and it’s no jobs. And have replaced quarter million dollar old SAN infrastructure with sub $100,000 synology with no issues.
    Keep up the good work!

      Did you see his video on the HA system? The iSCSI one was active active. Would that do the trick? Though I guess it's not much of a synology without DSM

    • @markamber1480
      @markamber1480 4 роки тому

      I only skimmed the video, but that was a unit with multipath disks. That is a proven HA strategy. What synology historically called HA is a replication strategy with two sets of disks on two units. It’s an atrocity because writes are obviously not synchronous when they are said to be and it tanks storage performance in half or worse.
      When businesses say they need HA they really mean they need dual controllers sharing the same backplane.
      I haven’t used those new synology but I assume they are fine. More of a SAN tho.

    They're great, for as long as they work. For 24/7 always on, we just cannot get them to last more than 3 years after which they just die (power supply). The last 2 we bought have the external power supplies which so far have worked well.

    I still have my Syonlogy from 2012 working. Happy it is still such a good NAS. Not the most powerful or maybe even fastest. But it works and it's actually mainly for storage. I don't run a flex server or surveillance camera's off of it. So for what it's supposed to do, it does a great job. I've been looking for a rack mount Synology though, but i always hear on the internet that they make a lot of noise? It's because i want to have it in my rack in my living room.

    I was one of the "lucky" ones to purchase a 2015 Synology back during peak power supply and Intel atom debacle. The worse part is trying to find replacements for proprietary parts once things do go bad and once you do will be lubed for it. No thanks, I will be sticking with old enterprise hardware or generic PC components.

    • @LauwersFreddy
      @LauwersFreddy 4 роки тому

      We replaced about 10 units with Intel atom failures during those times and while this was a pain, I want to mention this was an Intel issue, not a Synology one. Still the warranty was extended for all units that were affected and most of our units were even replaced by brand new 2017 models. They send a replacement unit the next day and we had to return the affected unit back within a week. All this without buying extra warranty. While I love our HPE ProLiant heavy Iron, we were impressed by the service and performance provided by Synology. You can’t even start to compare pricing between this heavy iron equipment and backup solutions like Veeam, but IMHO Synology does a pretty good job.

The Synology Directory Server user interface on DSM is pretty empty so RSAT are the only way to do more advanced things with it. For example it's the only way to set Group Policies.

Very reliable and had no problems at all. They also installed DSM on a HP 54L purely as a backup destination for the DSM virtual machine plus any other VMs i have on he server. The better way to pick the fitting NAS for small business (up to 5 users): go to a price comparison site, filter by CPU Intel, filter by number of drive bays needed. Select 2 GB for basic services and 4GB/8GB for packages like DICOM, directory server. Then sort by price ascending.. Then cross check if the package you need is supported by your model.
    Edit: active Backup for business works (as far as I have investigated) only on Intel machines

    Tom, Guys,
    I was really excited about my new Synology until I got to Section 7 of the EULA: 'Audit'. How can you guys agree to this being semi-privacy conscious? I'm genuinely interested. Is there a way around this portion? As a privacy conscious person, I'm having a hard time digesting that clause. Is there a way around it or a way to use the unit without having to accept this?
    Sure the likelihood of someone coming out to physically audit my system is low, but possible. 'Agent' could mean it's done through firmware or software.
    Thanks.
    Here's Section 7:
    Section 7. Audit. Synology will have the right to audit your compliance with the terms of this EULA. You agree to grant Synology a right to access to your facilities, equipment, books, records and documents and to otherwise reasonably cooperate with Synology in order to facilitate any such audit by Synology or its agent authorized by Synology.

    • @jeffreyurlwin6212
      @jeffreyurlwin6212 4 роки тому

      I trunk. Separate IPs can get you better, predictable performance if you have a lot of devices hitting simultaneously, but that takes a lot of monitoring, etc, and thinking about the IP that you use. Trunking automatically splits the traffic - maybe not the best way for you, but probably a good enough start for the simplicity. The trick is looking at the switch’s way to split the traffic .. source IP/ source Mac, etc. you won’t, likely, get more than 1 g out of any device (if you even get that much with the the storage on the back end - e..g from the cache), but it should split the traffic on each port for you with little hassle -

    I'm in the market for a 5 or 6 bay NAS for home use (Plex, Surveillance, backing up files). I was looking at the just released 1520+ but I've been seeing a lot of criticism about how Synology has been using olds parts for their hardware. A $699 NAS unit in 2020 with an older Celeron on there is one example. Or that 10Gbe isn't present (only 1Gbe) when competing products have it. Soldered memory that only leaves one slot for expansion is another one. What's your opinion on this? Surveillance Station is a big draw for me and so would be having Plex on there but my old laptop has a better CPU for that so it would feel like a downgrade. I'd like to have everything running on one NAS unit. Thanks!

      I use my 920+ as a Plex server as well, backup to an older DS418j, that is going to my in-laws house with a site-to-site VPN between, rather than using Synology to connect, so I have more control. Note though, on the 920+ the HW transcoding on the Plex (and the QNAP with the same Intel chip) has an issue with HW transcode. Small fix on the Plex forums temporarily to set the decoder to an older one. Fix coming from Intel, to Plex, then to us ... not sure when. But fixing the xml make the HW offloading WONDERFUL....in the 920+. Love the software adds in the + over the older J.

      I use my DS920+ as my Emby Server. Shared between myself and 8 family members each on their own remote location. No extra costs, just one time fee for the NAS itself. Plex charges fees per user.
      I also use my ds418j as a backup
      Its also used for surveillance storage.

    Why chose synology vs openmediavault/freenas on custom pc ? I have a dell micro 3070 with a lot of free and open source services and is a lot more powerfull and much cheaper

      Synology does not norm need complicated stuff to make it work, most stuff can be easily done via the GUI (you do pay for it thought, I consider not using Synology past 4 drives as Synology basicly charges £100 per bay +£200 for the unit so can get really expensive,
      but for an actual business it's far cheaper then dell solution and most can be setup in short amout of time and easy backup without extra expense

      Two words - Hot Swappable. My 1515+ allows me to hot swap drives, and when you have a disk failure, not having to shut down the system and risk losing data is a big plus. One button installs for Docker, plex, wordpress, etc means it’s simple to use and runs well. I have 3 of the GB ports teamed and have pulled multi-gigabit for simultaneous uploads/downloads. And like others have said, multi year software updates keep this a worthwhile investment

    I loved Synology Drive until I found out that there are hidden exclusions that were ignoring some of my files. Now I use the community SyncThing image.

    • @SergheiPopescu

      I think you can bypass that by explicitly adding *.* to the sync schedule, but you do have a limit on the number of files synced, depending on the model.

    "Before we jump into all of that, hit that LIKE BUTTON..." Yeah, no. How about IF your video is ANY GOOD I MIGHT hit the like button IF it has benefited me personally. But I wouldn't know that until after I have watched the video. So asking me to LIKE your shit before I've seen it is immediately annoying.

    I've been running a Synology DS1512+ since April 2013. I've had disks fail, replaced disks to increase capacity, and still, I've never lost any data. Until they embrace 10GB networks in their home products, and I upgrade my home network, I don't have a reason to upgrade.
