They suck in high and hot conditions, they lose effectiveness at higher speeds, are actually way more complicated and complex that a conventional tail rotor and running hot exhaust through the tailboom makes you stand out like the sun on IR... If a bullet passes through the boom where the exhaust for the NOTAR is, it deforms the "nozzle" and then it locks up/jams the nozzle in that position. A conventional tail rotor is harder to hit with a bullet.
First comment? Wow. This looks legit! I heard the Kiowa is getting axed. This would be a great replacement but id say the 160th S.O.A.R boys would most likely get first dibs on something like this.
I can't wait to see the 540 hit the civilian market But as a helicopter pilot and a lover of the 500 Series. I hope they give the option of a traditional Analog cockpit, I know that sounds old fashion but if it aint broke don't fix it, and more electronics to me just mean more problems from a maintenance standpoint and a personal preference. I don't want them to take my analog away from me D:
02:15 - 02:30. A couple hundred rounds of ammunition expended, almost none hit any of the target vehicles. Wonder how the aircraft would perform IF fitted with a set of wheel tricycle undercarriage like the Apache or Alouette III helicopter instead of skids?
That's the L3 MX-10, the same people that make the EOTech Holographic Sight...which is at the center of a huge controversy right now over the reticle drifting up to 5moa when exposed to cold weather. SOCOM just cancelled their contract and L3 offered ALL customers a full refund or a new optic (even though the 'problem' is still present.)
I just inform myself for this... And this is pretty hard to build a 5 moa that also can fit with military hardest condition. ((Making compact lens build to optimize 500 yards distance image...)) ho well this is their type of challenge I guess... thank you for the comment by the way.
+M krump It's kind of ridiculous for the military to complain, if you go from sea-level to say 3000m elevation, you need to re-zero your optic, so shouldn't it be expected to be the same when changing temperatures? Especially extremes? But L3 should've been honest up front.
+Rob Bader the sight isn't a scope that magnifies / "zooms in" (makes things bigger), it's what's known as a 'reflex sight' or a 'red-dot' sight. It's basically just a clear window with a small crosshair projected onto the lens... It's designed for shooting with both eyes open at relatively close ranges, though you could use it out to several hundred meters. Very popular with law enforcement and special forces worldwide.
Rob Bader for 300 yards... well is ok for a red dot. But to 500 yards... The lens must also be converted with magnifies or the 5mos is useless. If someone does a supressive fire with 5.56 at 500 yards this remains a supresive fire. It's obsiously to me.
MASHAALLAH khub valo video....
hats off to md helicopters for this amazing 540a and it's incredible suite of avionics and weaponry one of my favorite machines !!
The MD540A is a beautiful helicopter, I want it to be back in operation for many more decades and never need to be replaced unnecessarily.
Love the Hughes/md helicopters, have built and flown many of them.. my all time favorite..
How does the AH-6I compare to MD530G or MD 540A ?
Excellent film footage and commentary.
Dagger and Raytheon guided rockets? Yes!
Why isn't it NOTAR? Figured that was standard on the 500 series. Or do you have to buy the premium sound system and leather interior?
Also, you should totally play the theme song from Magnum P.I. when you guys do a presentation for the 500 series.
Because there’s a dirty little secret about NOTARs🤨.
They suck in high and hot conditions, they lose effectiveness at higher speeds, are actually way more complicated and complex that a conventional tail rotor and running hot exhaust through the tailboom makes you stand out like the sun on IR...

Awesome little beast!
I really hope this or the H-6i replaces the OH-58

adznz the oh 58 program got shelved a few years ago the ah64 longbow now does recon and attack together the 58d was a cool looking bird though
Nice heat signature.

Wake up US Army revisit your history this is the perfect aircraft to scout for the ah-64 Apache
Wow what a great idea price wise.
I'm sold, I'll take one.

I think you can get about four of these for the price of one Apache. Maybe even five ?
5 easily, with entire weapon suite
Why they didn't put a 50 cal. Connected to the camera? Like the Apache style?
Cz that entire technology will add another 5mils...this chopper probably costs 10m ...and a ah64 can gon as high as 65m
It's been a few years, has anybody Bought them? seems like a great Idea
The Afghan airforce has a bunch of these in different versions
@@matikhorasani3842 not anymore
@@nagoogle8542 Still do. A lot of them actually. The next Afghan government will make use of them.
@@matikhorasani3842 if you're referring to the taliban as the next government then yes, or at least attempt to lmfao
@@nagoogle8542 The pilots will be recalled so no problem 😉
Thermal, 4k view? :D 2:14
I pretty like the camera
