I was at the new Gridserve site just off A47 in Norfolk two weeks ago. Saturday morning, 07:30. I was literally the only customer on the whole site.
Biggest time issue would have been making my mind up which charger I fancied using.
Lovely site with WH Smith / M&S / toilets and views from upstairs whilst your car does its thing. If this is the future, sign me up please.

I love the reliability of Gridserve, I've never had an issue with them. The only thing I'd like from them is a lower price - but then again, petrol at a motorway services is eye-wateringly expensive as well so I haven't got much room to complain!

My son's colleague's dad has MG ZS EV long range, and he did 60000 miles in last two years, while using only a granny charger at home (renting), and charging at Tesco Pod-Point. On the trips they used Ionity. He drives slow and managed 400miles on a charge from that car!

Every company worth a shite should offer some sort of charging at work, assuming they have any parking.

Whenever I have used a fast charger, it has been very expensive. I set a timer for the car to slow charge at night when the electricity is cheapest. But otherwise, it would not be much more expensive to drive an ICE car.

Most of the rapid chargers near me are out of service. The nearest working charger is about 5 miles, so slow overnight charging is much better. I expect to see lots of lamp post charger conversions over the next couple of years. A steady 3kW charge for 8 hours would be more than enough for most people, me included.

I've been charging my 24kWh Leaf from a 3-pin socket for nearly a year now. Works fine. I need about 17 kWh to do a 50-mile round trip comfortably. We need more destination charging though.. would make life much easier for many people. Most people drive to a work / public car park, so it makes sense to slow-charge while the car is sat doing nothing all day. If it's cheap (e.g. 25p/kWh) it would make an EV a good choice for lots of commuters.

Something that often gets misrepresented when it comes down to discussions about EVs and criticism related to them is that people supposedly say "it's impossible to use them". This is not actually correct. It is possible but not actually sensible or convenient. Why would I want to deal with the hassle of searching for public charging stations which may be however far away from my home? I'd have to park the car there to charge it up and then move it again later or otherwise I might have to pay additional fees for blocking the charger. It's also more expensive to use these chargers making the point of owning an EV (to save money on fuel) redundant in the first place.
So of course it can be done. The question is do I want to buy an EV with all the annoying aspects of the recharging? And the answer is no.
It's like the Tesla debate about the Cybertruck where Musk claimed "They said it can't be done but we did it anyway". No one really said it couldn't be done though. Many just said it's stupid to build that thing.
Anyway if you are happy with your EV then that's good for you. I hope it works well. I hope you can accept though that there will be lots of people though that want to stick with ICE cars as they definitely have advantages. I don't want to block EVs. Whoever wants to buy them should buy them. But ICE cars for the foreseeable future should remain as well until an actual better alternative is developed. EVs definitely are not the solution.

    • @challengefatty
      @challengefatty  29 днів тому

Totally get it, I'll continue racing ICE cars for the foreseeable. But genuinely, I don't see the charging I did during this as annoying or an inconvenience. When I get to use my home charger or the one at work I'd say its waaaaaaaay more convenient than gas. Yes ICE has its pros and cons, so do EVs - but I'm a 100% with you on everyone should make there own choice on what's best for them 👍

A very good film: very fair I'd say.
One thing with EV's, esp if you've had them for bit and then had to use a petrol / diesel car afterwards, is just how premium the EV experience is.
Quiet, mechanically inherently smooth, one pedal driving, pre-heating etc. I think EV's have been pitched wrong: they're just nicer for all the crappy day to day driving. The fact they are cheaper to run, have far less maintenance and have a much smaller cradle-to-grave footprint are all bonuses.

EXACTLY!! I am alway struck now, by how intrusive gear changes are now - even on posh, refined cars. It seems like such an insane petty niggle, but I was blown away by how much I noticed them

I've had 2 EVs and lived in apartments with no private parking (street parking) and I successfully survived.
The first one was a Hyundai. I lived about 15 mins from a charger that went up to 75KWh. I wasn't using the car much so a full charge would last me a week. I used to go at night to charge the car and either watch a movie, tv show or play some games while waiting for it to charge.
Second one a Tesla. I lived 15 mins away from a Supercharger and this time I drove a lot for work, so I went twice a week for ~40 mins to get the range I needed.
Some people might think it's very inconvenient to be worrying about chargers and ranges, I would say is just another way of looking at transportation and you get used to it. Rather than taking it as an additional chore, you must take it as an opportunity to do something else while you charge. Could be catching up on social media, a book, your me time, even while you grocery shop or eat.

You can buy a 16amp granny charger for around £100 which gives 3.6 KW. AS LONG AS YOUR CIRCUIT IS BIG ENOUGH , IT'S A USEFUL SPEED IF YOU CAN'T FIT THE 7KW ONE.

And how many people drive 286bhp company cars? EV's are always considerably more powerful than ICE equivalents. Quite frankly, for a £5 saving, I'd stick with ICE so I don't have to get up at 6am to charge my car and I can go 400 miles without any degree of range anxiety. EV technology is not yet where it needs to be, super charge electric prices are too expensive and many still force people into subscriptions to get reasonable charging rates which I think should be legislated against. You don't see dual-pricing for petrol/diesel and when I fill up my ICE car, For people who don't have any option other than commercial charging, I really don't see what advantage an EV has. The only way I'd possibly consider an EV is if it was a company car. By the way, I usually fill up my ICE car at Haydock island.

@@alunjones2550 fair cop. I'd argue you're not considering the environmental impact of driving fossil car though. If you have chargers nearby is it really that much of a sacrifice? Guess it depends on how often you'd need to charge (how big your battery is)?

I think an EV is great for you As you have the ability to charge at home and Or free at work I know if that was me I would probably only be charging it at work 😂 But I think for people who don't have Access to work or home charge It would probably be frustrating to sit around for 30 minutes Waiting for a car to charge at a charge point When if you use petrol or diesel it literally takes you a couple of minutes And you're on your way , Enjoyed watching this challenge have a wonderful weekend mate

On a normal (non-EV) tariff, I'm paying about 30p / kWh. That's approx. 10p per mile. If I move to an EV tariff, the price will go down to about 5p per mile.

You should have just bought a Tesla. Tesla Superchargers are available everywhere. I have a 2020 model Y and my wife has a 2018 model 3. So, far everything is great. Cheaper than gas. No oil changes. No smog tests. Not much maintenance. We love our EVs. We will never go back to gas again - to us, a gas car is like driving a horse and wagon.

Teslas are a good option, but sadly I can't pick one through my company scheme. I could use the superchargers, in fact if I'd needed a final top up on Thursday night in Manchester, I was going to go to the open superchargers near by.

Over time in a less than a couple of decades or sooner every Tom, Dick, and Harry will be driving an EV and will want nothing else because the alternative will be expensive as hell to drive. Or do you perhaps think the black stuff coming out of the ground will be coming out endlessly? Car manufacturers who aren't doing EV's , while they still can and have the money for it, will be dead and gone by the time EV will become a necessity. People can all rant and complain however much they want, EV's will be a fact and there's nothing anyone can do about it. But I do sure hope I can drive my ICE car for as long as it is reasonable for my wallet.
