As a Tuluva and a believer/follower of this practice I will respond with a detailed explanation. What you covered is very accurate btw. The key thing to note is Rishabh actually sought permission from these very daivas, to ensure he had their approval and that he would represent them accurately. Only then did he move forward. And bless him, they did!!

We are extremely fortunate to have been educated by Sri Narasimha Rao garu about the nature and role of the deep involvement of the Sthala Daivas, Grama Devas, etc., in the day-to-day lives of the forest and village dwellers. It becomes even more compelling because this movie is a direct outcome of the required (a priori) permission of the deity, which permeated Rishab Shetty’s portrayal with authenticity. The need to align oneself to the priorities of the concerned deity is another invaluable piece of wisdom. More than a movie review, this has been an education. We must be extremely grateful for the dissemination of insights which have faded from popular memory. Namaskaralu to Sri Narasimha Rao garu!

That’s a great point to make 🙏🏼 Rishab Shetty approached the head of all daiva Annappa Panjurli at Dharmasthala, while seeking permission, daiva applied his color on Roshan Shetty as a blessing to move ahead with the movie. He also kept the Darshana padri close to guide him through the movie to ensure he does not represent the worship part wrongly. We fear and respect our daivas in Tulunadu and he understood that any kind of wrong representation would cost a lot 🙏🏼🙏🏼 my grandmother always said, in kaliyuga daivas listen to the prayers quickly compared to Devas 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 daivas are nothing but the Gana of Shiva

In Uttarakhand we came across the same thing. Almost in every family one member is possessed by one's Kul Devata or Kul Devi for a few hours. Every village has a Gram Devata. In addition to it, selected male members sit around Devi Dhuni for twenty-two days. In the evening when the ojha starts war like songs while beating the big dhol with wooden sticks, spirits of the warriors of Guru Gorakhnath start entering in the selected men and they start dancing around the holy fire. Some even touch their tongues with hot red iron sticks of the dhuni. Every villager can view the rituals and get blessings of the 'avatars'. Narsingh, Gwel and Bhagwati are the main Devi Devata of the region. At some places Betal is also worshipped.

His father said he has entered the Gaja Kesari phase of his life which will last for next 13-15 yrs. Thanks to friends who pointed out that the wild boar Devata Panjurli is related to a Shiva-Parvati story rather than Vishnu's Varaha avatara. Apologies for my error. 🙏 However, please note that Vishnu's forms (e.g. Varahavatara), Shakti's forms (e.g. Vaaraahi) and forms described in other stories have links and often made of the same energy. Specifically, the same planetary energy associated with wild boar should be behind these Devatas and my point of planetary links should still be fine
Secondly, a friend from Kerala pointed out that they have a Devata called Gulikan in their "Thyeyyam" ritual dance and my guess that Guliga Deva is related Shani Deva's son Gulika seems correct. Presumably, Sanskrita name Gulika became Gulikan in Malayalam and Guliga in Tulu.

We don't have to necessarily relate everything to Shiva Puranam. That's also mans creation. Shiva Tattva is present everywhere and local traditions have to be respected. All so called Brahminical references are easy targets for anti-nationals and anti-Hindu vadis and look, honestly most of the anti nationals are from the community called Brahmins and many are interested like you in settling somewhere rather than take them on. Many work for The Wire or Quint. I'm not a Brahmin and I couldn't accept my entire life spent there so after more than a decade i returned to India

You read panjurli right. "Panji" in tulu means wild boar. Story goes that, when Shiva sent guliga to earth , he sent devi chamundi to control him. In most places in tulunadu we worship guliga with another Daiwa like panjurli or devi etc because controlling guliga alone by humans is not possible. He is too ferocious. His kola is a sight to watch, not for the faint hearted😁 BTW panjurli is soumya roopa. That's why the saying goes "panjurli budiyedala gulige budaye" means even if panjurli spares you guliga won't!

Pranaam Sir. We have a similar Devta pratha in Himachal Pradesh. The Sthan Devta is our first point of contact with the supernatural. The Devta decides matters of mundane life such as disputes, litigations, identification of robbers etc. It is such a beautiful and profound phenomenon of witnessing the Divinity in material form. Because of the blessings of our Devtas, we can realise the Brahman which resides in every soul.

Sir, In Tulunadu we are sometimes unaware of the origin or nature of "Bhootas" we worship during Kola (also called as Nema) . But almost every Bunt ancestral house has Chamundi (referred to as Chavandi) with Gulika as well as Rahu who are worshipped outside the house. So you are right about the connection between Rahu and Gulika. There are simple stones consecrated for these deities under sacred trees / groves. These are not sthala or Grama devtas but Kula devatas and if the Bunt family relocates they have to "take" these deities with them and carry on the worship at their new place after performing appropriate rituals. Any such move or relocation is normally done only after ascertaining the will of God / deity either during the Kola / Nema by consulting the deity when the patri is possessed by the deity OR through a "Prashna" astrology consulatation.

    Dear Guruji,
I liked your review of the movie and being an Billava Tuluva from Mangalore, it is part of our familial tradition of Bhoota Kola and Nema as it is practiced still. Though I am a Bombay born, I saw the Kola when my father took me to meet Grandma for the first time and also to attend the kola of Grama Devi Sri Mahakali of Derebail. I was fully taken in by the event and was also surprised when the Devi asked my father why he brought his youngest son so late to seek her blessings - i was about 7-8 years old then. i was wondering how this goddess knew i was even around when i never attended any previous events. Now i realize this spiritual connect of Grama Devatas which knows and keeps an eye out for its horde of souls under its care. I did the same with my boys couple of years back and as they are truly modernized and were mortified to be among the rustic crowd of the village, leave alone enjoy and soak in the event which would have been engrossing for any curious soul. This movie has again lit the spark of our earlier traditions which was almost getting forgotten and wiped away by the encroaching foreign influences. This movie projected the old sanatana traditions which is kept alive by few and this movie will help to rekindle the interest in these.

"Bhootas as dispensers of Divine Justice" - A Kola/Nema is a possession ritual for worshipping different Deities. But another major and integral aspect of a Kola is to seek Divine intervention of the Deity to help tide over personal difficulties AND help dispense Justice by resolving disputes between different persons or Groups. In the olden days when the judicial system was non existent this was the primary and most credible dispute resolution mechanism in the villages of TuluNadu. Even today given the state of our judicial system it is practically impossible for the poor to get a fair judgment from our courts against the rich and resourceful. Knocking the doors of the Bhoota during a Kola is seen as the easiest and surest way of attaining justice by the less resourceful. The justice dispensed during the Kola has the stamp of the Divine. There is a saying in Tulu - "Nyaya tathudh Maya athth, Maya Thathudh Nyaya Athth" meaning there can be no true Justice without Maya (the Bhoota is also called as Maya - even the best of humans/judges are fallible ) and that Maya or the Bhoota will always favour the Just and it is not possible for the rich and powerful to use their influence during the Kola(unlike the courts) to subvert justice. It is therefore very common even today in TuluNadu for the poor to approach the Deity during a Kola /Nema with complaints against the most powerful persons/ families with the firm belief that the solution would be fair. The "fear" of the Bhoota in most cases ensures that even the most powerful accept the resolution in letter and spirit. Tulunadu is full of anecdotes and legends of the "misfortune" that people who ignored the Bhoota's "Nudi" (Tulu word meaning Divine "command / instructions / guidance") had to suffer. Kanatara weaves this aspect of Bhoota Kola into its plot beautifully

One correction WRT understanding of the Bhootas origins.
It is not a form of Varahavatara of Vishnu but its Varaaha roopa which is inspired by forest dwelling wild boar. The origins of Bhootas are traced to Ganas of Shiva and the first bhoota is supposed to be Annappa Panjurli of Sree Kshetra Dharmasthala where the presiding diety if Sree Manjunatha. This one issue was lost in translation by ones who put the english subtitles.

Specially after 1956 land ceiling Act, joint family system started disintegrating. As industries started coming up, people moved from villages to cities. somewhere around this timeline people ignored their Kuldharma, Kulachaar and basic religious rituals that were being followed by previous generations.
It's important to know, understand and practice Kuldharma and Kul Aachar on yearly basis for happy and peaceful life. Unless we offer services / surrender to these deities we will not be in a situation to understand and experience that Small Shiva temple which exists in village since centuries has the same energy which you experience at Kaashi.

In our house too in my mothers side, we have similar ritual which was last done some 20 years ago related to veerabhadra and the pooja name is called - VEERABHADRUNI PALLEM...and in that, one of the specialty is that, in one of the part of the ritual they exxactly measure some 5 kgs of rice etc with very very acurate measurements and will keep in a box and close it and no one will even touch it and it will be kept in middle of pooja only before every one and all can see it but after performance of pooja and completion of coming of veerabhadra on a person and answering etc, post opening of that rice box...extra some 1 kg around rice will be thr with which prasadam will be made and given to all bhaktas. And last time when i attended that festive, after completion it got rained too as an omen of blessing from the god.

Kola / Nema is a form of worship where different type of deities are invoked f(Avishkara) for worship. These are powers like Mahakali, Vishnu moorthy, OR astrological beings like Rahu, Gulika, etc OR BhutaGanas OR heroes who were humans in the past but attained the status of demi Gods due to their good and valorous deeds when they lived (eg Kalkura, Varthe, etc) Most of the Kolas have animal sacrifice (normally roosters) but not all. Some Satvik deities are also invoked during Kola. Chamundi, Gulika are normally worshipped together - Gulika is Chamundi's "Banta". The concept is that the main Deity (Chamundi for eg) is like potential energy and they have other deities (like Gulika) who "work" and maintain dharma. While roosters are offered to Gulika, Chamundi (who is also often worshipped in the same sacred Grove) is Satvik in Tulu nadu

Vedanta : All "things" in existence are interconnected. There is no "separate" thing. If that changes, this changes. The ultimate nature of existence hence is pure sentiency. And "I - the doer" or "feeling of I" as a separate unit, is a illusion of mind. This is monism or non dualism. Advaita.
However, in our ordinary state of being, on a "practical" level, of course there are differences. Any being that exists experiences existence only on the level of "ordinary state" (duality).
Devtas : In our ordinary state of experience of existence, existence itself is composed of various attributes. Beings that are high in attributes, as well as attributes that are represented through beings manifest, both are Devtas (Deities). Worships are done to align ourselves further to those attributes - as well as seek boons (if our Karmas allow) from those Devtas. Devtas can be understood as "elementary attribute - ness". For instance, fire is a Devta. As well as there are more "being like" Devtas which exist in higher realms.

I am from manglore village called kateel,it is 100%hindhutwa and sanatana Dharma, when starting this ritual daiva it self claims I am gana of shiva , subramanya , ganapati from where they come they give 10minutes of explanation to the head of the house or grama performaing kola or nema, through out dakshina kannada region every caste ex Hegde,Shetty, gowda, Brahmins and many more.and they worship daiva or bootha in stone roopa ,daivas like panjurli ,gooliga, rajeshwari, malaraya, kalurthi and many more, and every family they have temple for daivas outside the house in stone roopa ,only ornaments of daivas will kept in their house.this is the reason that no negitive elements or power will not dare to enter their house where ornaments placed.one more ritual will perform in dakshina Kannada called nagamandala.other name called brammeru, and every Brahmin house they have their own nagabana means Naga temple.

What a review from such a scholarly person both spirutally and scientifically ! THANK YOU SIR. our faith in our daivas lead us to live a life based on dharma. family fueds are rarest in kutumba even if there are, our daivas see to it that they are settled amicably. For a kola the presence of the whole Kutumba or representation of maximum is a must. .and this kutumba is a lot of members related by blood and this can be a very large cult.sutaka applies to all if there is birth or death of anyone in this kutumba. Annually too the members meet up for puja n sacrifice for our deities. puja during ganesh chaturthi tulsi Pooja in Diwali and every Sankranti too Pooja is performed except in ashada month But kola or nema is done on large scale. The daiva is not pleased if some sort of sourness in relationships amidst certain members exists. Killing one's own blood for land or wealth is never heard of in people of tulunad.even if it is it might be in the rarest of rare case. Whatever daiva says it is followed without questioning because faith in him takes care of everything. In this Kaliyuga if brothers do live like ram laxman, sisters are treated respectfully as mothers and the sisters in spite of being married n having their own children r concerned for each others growth it is all becoz of our daivas. All this am saying becoz in our history books we read about moghul dynasties who killed their own kin for sake of power and I used to wonder how cud they? My answer to that is their faith had no daivas. Maha bharatha was also fued between brothers that is why the avatar of Krishna who guided the less privileged to fight for what was dharma. Yes we worship these energies to benefit from them but mostly we r afraid or shud I say we r aware that if we don't live by dharma we will be facing consequences in this life only and not after death. It is not blind belief it is the ultimate truth. And this is true for the all the sanatanis. Karma is the other side of the coin. Good karma good results bad karma will always come back if not in this life then in the next life. Since ages sanatanis are living life based on this belief and will always live like this for ages to come. Kantara has highlighted this message in this mesmerizing movie. Thanks for the makers of this movie many more will follow this genre of filmmaking in futer to come. The sheer success of this movie is owed to panjurli. The demigod is out in the open the climax says it all .. I Am there for you just keep the faith....

The budget is about 17 Cr.
Yes. The character of Pramod is a grey character who vacillates between self gratification and trying to good. He does not kill Shivu when he has a chance, instead saves him and pays the price.
The movie is raw, rustic with no heavy makeup, fancy dresses, item number, etc.
Movie was completely shot on locations. The village was actually a set built on location.
Brilliant cinematography and bgm ( ajneesh loknath). The movie has excellent editing. Technically the team has shown great craftsmanship.
