Helenio Herrera: More Famous Than His Players
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Helenio Herrera may not have been the inventor of catenaccio, but his mastery of the ultra-defensive tactic has influenced coaches ever since. Nicknamed ‘The Wizard’, Herrera can also claim to be one of the first superstar managers - the all-conquering Grande Inter side of the 1960s is remembered more as his team than that of any player.

"the ball always moves further, and more quickly, when there isn’t a player behind it".... Helenio Herrera
I guess it is kind of randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream new series online?
@Keenan Aden I use FlixZone. Just google for it :)
@Noah Donald Definitely, I've been watching on flixzone for years myself =)
@Noah Donald thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it !!
@Keenan Aden Happy to help =)
There are some pretty striking parallels between him and jose tbh, the culture, the combative relationship with some players, winning before all else, counter attacking football on a solid defensive base... hadn't noticed it before.
Just read the Catenaccio portion of 'Inverting The Pyramid' & thought the exact same thing lol. Mourinho's a mix of Herrera's approach as a manager (tactically & psychologically) & Bela Guttmann's attitude as a professional.
You can see why Mourinho & Inter was destined to work, he was Herrera's heir in so many ways.
Italian words in football like 'catenaccio' always sound more exciting and intelligent than their translations in English. 'Door-bolt' sounds as interesting as 'parking the bus'.
italian language is magical
As a speaker of both languages (not native of either), while catenaccio sounds just perfect for its use here, “Parking the bus” is absolutely brilliant and probably my single favourite English football slang
@@Itualit's a Portuguese term, that's why Jose used it
I really love this channel, the narrator, and the way you guys deliver the content. Amazing
Yeah was thinking the same thing - the joy of partaking in these videos is really sublime sometimes
Yep, absolute class
Was waiting for a good video on Helenio Herrera, ever since I read Jonathan Wilson's "Inverting the Pyramid". Thanks Tifo Football.
Such a good book
I'm watching this video after read his chapter ..haha
In fact, even though his Inter line-up was remembered by memory (Sarti, Facchetti, Burgnich...), it is remembered as Herrera's Inter.
A comparison between the two Milan teams in the '60s would be great
what about herrea inter vs sachi millan, that would be an awesome comparision.
@@kaneessey3839 well, yes, but they are separated by decades, while Herrera's Inter and Rocco's Milan were powerhouses in the same years
One of the greatest tactical minds of all time and his legacy is still felt in football today.
So, he was the Arsene Wenger of his day, in a sense that he was focal on the diet of players. Also, I like the attention to detail, in a sense that you used the old crests rather than the current crests.
Kinda impressive that Italy have three teams that can be considered footballing royalty in Inter, Juve and Milan.
1:48 ..luiz suarez...the original 😂
the original and the better
Viejotrueno OG Suarez is good but the current one is better
Different type of players
Stop comparing
@@ZSHDon hard to say but the real Luis Suarez managed to snag 2 league titles from the legendary Real Madrid doom squad with Barcelona
@@kevinjackson9573 which one, Miramontes or the uruguayan one?
This sounds like a boss I would die for. Like Cholo Simeone. Viva 🇦🇷
Also if you notice, it took them years to get their team right. Will Pochettino do them same in terms of stating at spurs?
Mourinho and Conte might be among the few to have drawn the correct lessons from Herrera
Conte tactics are no where near heleno Herrera, Mourinho and simeone are the closest coaches to his style.
@@kaneessey3839 Conte's defensive tactics are 532, whics is close to Herrera's catenaccio system.
@@AbuAbdillahMikail but he has not incorporated the counter attack that Herrera did in his team's. Mourinho 2010 inter is identical to to herera 60s teams.
@@kaneessey3839 Well if we talk about the counter attack, maybe you're right. But if we talk about defensive style, Conte are pretty similiar to be honest.
Herrera came to Glasgow to watch Celtic play Rangers in April 1967, weeks before the European Cup final and was overheard in a Glasgow Airport coffee shop while waiting for the flight home by an Italian speaking journalist for The Daily Record I think it was, saying “non penso che li batteremo” (I don’t think we’re going to beat them) to his assistant coach. Fact.
Mourinho, conte, simeone are his modern day disciples.
Conte is more attacking then both of them
Luis Suarez left Barcelona after they lost the European Cup in 1961 3-2 against Benfica, hitting the post a bunch of times. If those had gone in, Luis Suarez wouldn't have left (he's the only Spanish Balon D'Or winner in history) and the Inter dynasty would have looked different.
Internazionale per sempre. 🔵⚫🔵⚫🔵⚫
As a Moroccan it's hilarious to me that the catenaccio's godfather spent some time here. I knew the negativity and defensiveness of our league came from somewhere.
Wydad 2017 champions league win thanks to him 😂😂😂😂😂
Hhhhh he wasn’t negative, our league does suck, you can’t say this team play herrera’s way, ..., they just keep throwing balls hhhh
our league is shit is due to a simple reason the presidents of the clubs don't fund enough money for the youth and to develop academies to create a style of play that can suit them and make them successful in term professionalism and to have a clear strategical view for the future of the teams
So I just learned that he is my Spanish teacher’s grandfather. Small world
I love the narration on these videos, its so relaxing and comforting and the animation style is certaily unique. top marks all round, including the original author!
Luis Suarez, the original 😂😂
two weeks ago I was in Venice and I found the grave of Helenio Herrera. it has a CL trophy on it...
Beautiful!
A player once recalled that Herrera would ask the players what kinda movies they wanted to watch whether it was a western , romance or horror when he already had the tickets to the movie in his pocket .
Iconic .
Could you do an episode on overlooked England players? Hitchens, Le Tissier, MacManaman etc. All with interesting careers and abilities that would have brought an extra dimension if used more regularly.
William Hughes another docu on Le Tissier
Make a video for Greek national team in 2004 tactics
yes please!
This is my STYLE OF FOOTBALL
Could Simeone be a new Herrera?? I hope he will come at Inter in a few years (his football ideas are fitting well with Inter's DNA).
History of Bela Gutman would be great.
In Italian your must pronunce :
- chi for ci
- ché for ce
- chio for cio
- ki for chi
- ké for che
I love your work and your videos
Jose Mourinho really was inspired by him.
Mou learned a lot from Bobby Robson (RIP) and van Gaal

"Luiz Suarez, the original".. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@ Tifo Football - Could you guys tell me what was Facchetti's role in this team? How did he manage to score so many? The few clips I managed to find, he plays in the centre, just in front of the penalty area, as a sort of a #10. But how did he get there so regularly from left back and how did Herrera cover for him? Thanks in advance!
.
he is fullback, but modern role of fullback since in those era fullback dont come forward in opposition half
@@nicnic9906 - What does a 'modern fullback' mean? I saw some that bombed forward frequently, even that era, like Djalma Santos or Carlos Alberto Torres. But I never saw one that played as an auxiliary #10. Not in the 'modern era', not way back when.
more or less a taller, early prototype for a jordi alba. also, they still played with a back 4+sweeper so someone was always covered if one bombed forward i assume?
great content 👍
Fantastic again !!
2:54 Look at the perils of an attacking system
Defensive systems are a necessity for most level of coaching and his and Jose's careers strengthen the fact.
I was waiting for a video on him for a long time. Thanks Tifo
this is the best channel on all of youtube
Jonathan herrera here !
The best UA-cam channel by far
Brave of you to use the unofficial Catalan flag...
To use a flag that is not official and only represents a fraction of the catalan citizenship? Brave?
Shay Conaghan not brave, it shows ignorance
Please, video for Nereo Rocco 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
According to some of his players, he was the best "bartender" in the game. He gave his players some very special "Coffee Plus" to drink and they just couldn't refuse. I don't know if you get it yet.
pls explain
@@mohamedsurejiyaranka959 Mr. Ferruccio Mazzola, the deceased brother of former Inter superstar Sandro Mazzola, clearly stated that Herrera used to test first on the "Substitutes" and then on the "best eleven" some (not so) mysterious coffees.
Sandro M. himself firstly denied and then finally confirmed his brother's version. If you look at the statistics, you will clearly see that former Inter Players have had an extremely high percentage of mortal cancer (Mr Picchi died of cancer at the age of36!) and most of them shared the same destiny. And that's just the beginning...
@@mohamedsurejiyaranka959 P.S. According to what Mr Mazzola Jr told to the press, his symptoms (just like Increased Heart Rate and blood pressure; Muscle spams; loss of appetite; lack of "fatigue" etc,) were typical of someone who's consuming a consistent quantity of amphetamines. Just to be even more clear.
Thats why ...

Would be interesting what he did during the second world war
liverpool got robbed against his inter side in the semi final in 65.they scored straight from an indirect free and kick the ball out of the liverpool keepers hands.
Tommy Smith wanted to fight the ref 😂😂
And they say inter are the only Italian team that are not notorious for being corrupt.

The Original Simeone
Goated
Napoli still use the Ritiro to this day, much to the players anger the president is very old fashioned it caused a mutiny at the club under Ancelotti in the 19/20 season
The first Mourinho
Imagine being strict with the today’s players, players will win and get you sacked... god I hate modern footballers
yep. That's one of the reasons Super Teams rarely succeed. too many players with big ego. One of the reason Mou' succeeded at Porto and Inter was because the players were willing to give their lungs on the pitch for him.
idk, similar things are happening at inter now. I think our mentality is/was our biggest problem. But this season it's becoming more and more clear the management is putting the club above all. Starting with the suspension of Radja, the manner with which the Perisic situation was handled and how they managed to get him performing again, and now with stripping Icardi of captaincy after his constant destabilization of the team.
Just look at Chelsea, who would have thought that José Mo, Conte would bow down to players eventually....Catastrophic.
Even at Manchester United, players like Pogba, Marcial and Lingard actually downgraded their performance to sack the manager and that shit works.
michaelrut1 I think if mou goes there he can get inter back to its glory days... but players like radja and icardi are poison...
Anas Melhem I bet ole is one of those yes men...
can you do a video on Juanma Lillo?? *please*
Whatever happened to Italian managers. Now they're under players thumbs **cough** Conte, Sarri **cough** 😝

He's slightly better than Jose Mourinho.
@Juha Nieminen They are even in similar positions in the all time managers list.
The love for such tactics are dead now...passing is more important than winning....and potential goals seem to be more important than actually scoring goals....football feels dead
"Passing is more important than winning" lad ever heard of Barca & City?😂
@@JaleelBeig But they are exceptions because of Pep. And tbh, its dull to watch their football if you are a neutral. Goals under Fergie, Mou, Conte and Zidane are scintillating because of the speed of counter-attack. No passing bullshit.
@Abhiram so u are saying barca and city under pep are dull to watch and conte & mourinho produce beautiful football
