We named our new-born son Devon, and we've had this song sung by lots of people who first meet him. Why Devon? - well, my wife is from Somerset (so Devon is a nod to her British heritage, and Somerset didn't work quite so well as a first name), and we loved the name. Our little Devon from heaven - and when he was 8 weeks old, we travelled from Melbourne Australia to visit Devon - and of course, take a photo of him held in his mother's arms in front of a 'Welcome to Devon road sign :-)
I too live in Devon and feel totally blessed. I’m not a true native ‘I’m a Blowin’ as the Irish would say. I came with my young family in 1987 and worked at my local district District Hospital, until I retired after 40 years nursing service in the NHS. My children are now grown adults and have remained in the area. We now have grandchildren. There’s nothing better than walking on the moors or sitting watching the ocean. I remember singing this wonderful song In primary school. Never did think I would one day be lucky to call the county of Devon home.
This is a great idea for an entertaining presentation. Devon and it's beautiful harbor as it is today with the magic of Peter Dawson singing makes for a lovely tribute of the town. Thank you.
I've lived in various parts of Devon over the years : Kingsbridge, Plymouth, Ilfracombe, Exeter, and now Sidmouth. Sidmouth is my favourite of the five Devon towns that I've lived in. I'm now living in a little cottage 100 yards from Sidmouth seafront. This is it for me. I won't be moving again.
I'm fortunate enough to call dear DEVON my homeland, and there is nowhere else I'd like to be. For me, she is the fairest county in all England. The opening scenes of this footage are of Brixham, due south of where I live in Devon's ancient old capital city, Exeter.

This sounds to me as close to a Spartan or Roman hymn as our boring modernity allows. I studied in Little Rissington, Cotswolds, many years ago, and fell in love with the country. England shall live forever.

Why doesn't this show scenes of what the song mentions, gardens, green meadows, birds, cliffs instead of the urban trains, concrete, and car traffic?
