- Using your toe boards on your sawmill is critical to help keep your lumber from warping and bowing.
By raising the small end of the log your cuts will be parallel with the Pith ( Center ) of the log. This helps you get the best lumber out of you logs.
You are a great teacher and make it easy to understand about running parallel with the pith so you obtain the maximum good wood from a log..
Glad to hear your feedback Thankyou!
Great video. I shall use your technique
Nice video. Short and to the point. Excellent job.
Thankyou!
I like this simple explanation, easy to understand how it works.
Hey buddy how are ya? Thanks for the easy way to gage pith height. I have the hd36v2 and love it! What kinda blades are you running and how much time in the wood do you get with them? Do you sharpen, if so what machine do you use? I’m using woodmizer double hard 10 degree I saw mostly pine, cedar and fir. Thanks for sharing I’m glad I found you channel. God bless you and yours.
Hi there! Good to hear!! Thankyou.
I run mostly Cook’s saw manufacturing blades. I like their 10 degree blades.

I do re-sharpen. And I use the cooks catclaw sharpener!

As well as the tooth setter from cooks.

Talk about my sharpener and setter some.
I was just trying this on 16' long Norway Pine. I thought I had the pith centered, but as I'm jacking up the small end the large end's center is changing some. lowing the large end center. I have not figured out exactly how much, but I will figure it out.
It sounds like your large end is hanging over the cross bunk and therefore it is being lowered slightly when you raise the small end.
I started measuring the large end of the log at the cross bunk. And going off of that measurement to find the center of the small end. That way when I raise the small end, it doesn’t matter if the large end goes down. Because the measurement was taken at the cross bunk, and it won’t change, it will just pivot on the cross bunk.
I hope that makes sense.
I talked about this in another video here:

@@Plankmills That makes sense. And yes when I mill 16' logs the large end will be between bunks. I plan on using my builders laser level soon. I'll report back then.
