    Weather, weather, weather! It makes all the difference! Nick is a meteorologist, which helps us go fast and stay safe aboard Clarity. So just how fast does this Leopard 46 sail? We dig into the numbers on our short hop to the Abacos a few days ago. We talk nitty gritty and get specific with routing and weather.

    Excellent video, please keep up the nitty gritty details for sailing, not boring at all. Watching people endlessly snorkling and hiking, now that's boring. Make sailing videos about sailing, it's how we landlubbers learn.

    Great video!!! Most sailing channels focus so much on the diving and the destination. It's so much more enjoyable to see what you're doing on a passage. Weather, sail handling, talking safe and common sense strategies .... etc, make me want to come back for more. I'm glad I ran into your channel this morning! I'd love to learn more about how each of your sails handle different conditions.

    Another very informative vid guys - thank you! They are pretty impressive speeds. I read that the Smiths - 'Sailing Happy Together' - had their L48 doing 10 in 12 kts of wind and 15.5 in 20 - fully laden! A Leopard would definitely be our choice - and from what I have seen of your 46 the cockpit configuration appears better and bigger than that on the 48. And don't forget to put Shelburne on your NS itinerary - the beer's chilling! Be safe!

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 років тому

      Really!?!?!? That's impressive. There are faster boats, but at that price point, I just don't think there is a better combo of performance, livability and build quality. I would really love to talk to a L50 owner. Looks like a very nice ride. We will put Shelburne on the list. We gotta get a bottom job while we are up there. Recommend anyone? Has to be able to haul 25 ft beam. Best, Nick

      Aren't they?! I'd get in touch with the same guy - Randy Smith - very affable guy, as he just picked up his L50, lucky man. Look up their UA-cam channel 'Sailing Happy Together'. His L48 speeds are on the Leopard site. Will make enquiries re the haul out and get back to you. Be safe, Phil.

    Love the weather routing content. Especially as informed from a professional standpoint. Something a lot of sailing vlogs give short shrift to which we value, is routing generally with actual chart track content showing what routes you end up choosing and exposition as to why. For example we're quite interested in routing up to and returning from New England (with all the factors described and explained, such as Gulf Stream, hurricane season, safe harbors in route, etc). With a Euro-tall rig and thus ICW not an option, it's the kind of thing we love to see. Great content. Thanks!

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 років тому

      At 75' air draft, we are in the same boat: no ICW! More weather and routing coming up I think as we head north. It's a huuuuge subject.

    Your previous seamanship and meteorological experience shines, Nick! Thanks for the detailed analysis...I could see the gears turning. Excellent!
    I'm jumping around, watching the videos and hope you see these three suggestions for future videos.
    1. Know Cats are inherently more stable than mono hulls, but what about seasickness? How does it affect the you, Megan, and Sugar? I can 'paint' the hull of any vessel. ;-)
    2. What first aid and meds would you suggest be stocked on board? Do you catch colds or flu when at sea? Peanut Butter won't cure everything!
    3. As a generalization, most people are good, and friendly; but the reality is that SOME would do you harm. Without revealing your personal circumstances, do many live aboards plan for pirates, or do they just pray for the best?
    Sorry if you covered these topics previously.
    Thoroughly enjoy your spirit of adventure, and your honesty on the sailing life. Stay safe out there!

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 років тому +1

      good questions Rusty.
      1. Fortunately none of us are prone to seasickness. Having said that ANYONE can get motion sick, it is just a matter of conditions. One of the boats we surveyed, an ultralight Schionning 49 had such severe motion that Megan felt nauseous in very mellow conditions off LA. In general, all of these cruising cats are going to be much easier for the sea-sickness prone person. However, the light cats like the Outremer have a much faster motion and could actually be worse than a monohull.
      2.We keep all the basic trauma kit on board for lacerations and infections but we do not go so far as having an epi-pen or similar. We don't get cold and flu while cruising, but have had some mild mosquito-born fevers. I disagree about peanut butter. Lol.
      3. Some cruisers get pretty wild about pirate preps, but it's easier just to avoid areas where it is a problem and these days everything is so well documented and reported online...well, it's just easy to avoid. And all you ever REALLY hear about are dinghy thefts...that's not piracy. We are under much greater threat in the US than in the Caribbean. My two tips if someone were REALLY worried about their security while cruising: get a mean looking dog or stay home. I say stay home in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner because if that really is the person's greatest concern, they may not be the type to tolerate the more realistic threats like bad weather or equipment failures.

      Nick O'Kelly
      Thanks for the info, and such a prompt reply! Certainly wasn't expecting it! :-)
      I've read of recent increases of assault in the Bahamas, and other Isles. Believe the State Dept. even issued a warning. It peaked my concern.
      Agree about the peanut butter, but I like mine firm...you must have some separation from the heat.
      It's another rainy, and cool, day here in Harrisburg, Pa. ; a weather pattern that has me dreaming of sunny climes.
      Your jealous land lubber. :-)

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 років тому

      We are inside waiting out the same front here in the Abacos. A little warmer here. :) We went into Nassau to buy the new engine a couple weeks ago. Quite crowded. I could see there being more crime there, but the whole state dept thing looks...uh...over-reactive to me. But in the out island of the Bahamas? Naaa. No problems. Never lock anything. Doors always open. There are hot spots around any of these "major" towns, but it's no different than anywhere else in the states, etc....it is pretty easy to sniff out where you want to be extra careful.

    • @imoutclimbing
      @imoutclimbing 5 років тому +2

      Don't get me wrong... Your video is entertaining, but in an informative way. That makes it REAL, not just something to have fun with. And on the climbing and sailing... I think it has a lot to do with creating a connection with your environment (something that too many people lose these days). While climbing, you have a mandatory powerful connection to your environment. At every moment, everything is on the line. It is your knowledge and perseverance that allow you to synchronize with your environment, and achieve a sense of accomplishment that few will ever know. I see sailing in exactly the same way (but just a bit better as you're always surrounded by big blue). Hope to meet you out on the old gulf stream some day, Doug-

    Just stumbled upon you all looking for anchoring tips, and this video played next. You two are similar to me and my significant other. We also have a 14 year old ( almost 15 in 2 1/2 months) chocolate lab mix senior lady aboard and joining her are 2 cats. Have been live-aboards for 1 year now and are newer to sailing.
    Anywho! What great explanation and detail. I really learned a lot. Weather takes a bit to understand, but you did a great job keeping it simple and sweet. Great "Fonzie no worries" attitude in your explanation. Plus you two seem to be a great team. No one is too over bearing or in charge. Really cool.
    Ok! And now after I say all the great things about you, I hope you will answer my question. Tee hee.. How did you know the wind would shift to the east with those line of clouds filling in? Great videos from a real couple that seem to have much trust in each other. Thanks so much!

      Ah thanks. Appreciate the kinds words. Well, first of all I am a meteorologist and have been out on the ocean quite a bit, so just plain experience helps. But often when you see a band of cumulus like that, where the clouds are developing and moving in a line, even if the line is not moving relative to the boat...it means that the air is "converging." It has nowhere to go, but up, and that's what forms the clouds and the precip if any. When the clouds are moving along the length of the line, but the line itself is not moving that quickly, it means that the difference in wind angle is not that big, but it is there. So in a ESE wind, you might expect a cloud line to bring you a E wind if the line were advancing from the east. Enjoy your puppy every day. We lost Sugar in January and we miss her each and every day. Cats we tried on the first boat many years ago....it didn't work out. They moved back to land with a friend. Thanks for the note! See you out there!

    Nice casual discussion on weather, this was a rather easy passage but demonstrated the need to always consider the weather prior to leaving. Had this been a longer passage with some of the expected change to the east, I may have headed a bit east to allow for more sail with the weather if it ever arose and made for an uncomfortable ride.

    I really enjoy your videos and always look forward to watching more. They’re interesting, and the content is informative, positive and fun. I learn a whole lot about sailing and cruising cats from you. The quality of the video is generally good, especially given the colorful seascapes you share. But I wonder if you’ve tried using HDR on your cameras, and in particular when the camera is mounted, the two of you are speaking, and the detail of the top 1/2 of the background is blown out to accommodate the right light for both of you. HDR, while not always a desirable outcome since it can sometimes create too much contrast and boost the color unnaturally, may work well in many cases to retain the detail. Just a thought. Thanks very much for all the work you do to produce these great videos!

    Nice job guys!! We really enjoyed that. As an old airline guy I am interested in your weather analysis and how it applies to passage making. In my previous life we would receive and study printed versions of current wx and forecasts. But our concern was way more micro and compacted in terms of time and geographic location. So the expanded and longer term focus is very different. I am particularly interested in your use of the surface analysis charts, wave predictions, and the different technology platforms that you are using. Your vids are super helpful, and informative.

      Really..... Aviation is how I got into meteorology. I was reading TAFs back in the early 90s. Yep, totally different realm of forecasting. Depends on passage length, but I'm typically always looking days ahead. In the skies (I'm private w/instrument), rarely looking more than a few hours out. No icing to worry about down here, but figuring out when the ride will be most pleasant is critical because the turbulence runs the crew ragged in a hurry. I am going to see what people think of the weather analysis and if they like it, I'll do more. Appreciate your kind words Steve. Helpful is about the best we can hope for. Nick O.

    Thanks so much for this. Between this video and the earlier one on forecasting tools I have both learned a lot, and acquired a zillion questions I hope you answer. I think this video is a great model for how you can help people like me get a start on learning about forecasting. The subject is so big that it is very hard to figure out how to get started in self directed study mode. I don't mean to fault the authors of the popular books on the subject, but I just think it is too big a subject for some of us to get a handle on without some help
    Your earlier forecasting tools video talked about the different forecasting models and you make it clear that understanding what to take from each one depends on the situation. It seems to me that this idea of showing how you make those judgment calls during actual passage planning is a perfect way of helping me get a clue about how to make use of the other information that is available.
    For example, the discussion here about the behavior of the squalls in that line of clouds gave me a strong visual and conceptual model that I am now using to dive deeper on that subject and try to understand something about the relationship between horizontal and vertical flows on that kind of scale. I won't learn everything, of course, but I will be able to lock some of it in and then go on to some other element. Your guidance gave me a big picture context that I could use to help understand some details in a small area, without having to absorb a huge amount of other details to get the context for myself.
    Somewhere in a video comment you expressed surprise at the degree to which a commenter found this forecasting information to be a rare resource. I think that may be because it is hard for you to a beginner's point of view, deeply ignorant, on a subject in which you are so expert. Just trust us commenters that you are providing us with something uniquely valuable, and please keep it coming!
    If you decide to make this a regular feature, then I am sure the news will spread and I will be very surprised if you don't get a lot of new viewers because of it.

      Wow thanks for the feedback Dennis. Yes, it is hard to know what is interesting and useful for people, but hearing what you are saying makes me realize it is valuable info. I have a masters degree and can go on and on and on about geophysical fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, etc., but I will tell you that a good 80% of what I have learned about operational forecasting was listening to and then taking part in forecast discussions like you just saw in that video. You just have to start watching things...the patterns emerge and things start to become...obvious. Glad to have you along for the ride and I really appreciate your feedback. Best, Nick

    Have a 50' motor yacht (am overseas in Asia with the military) and really enjoy it. But since I started watching your channel, I've been thinking about retiring back to the Caribbean onto a 42-44' Cat. I have my sailing certs, but as a technical dive instructor who charters, sail boats don't work too well. Yet, for living full time, a Cat seems like a great choice. There are benefits to motor yachts, but there is something about moving through the water without the sound of engines running, and not running on fuel. I wouldn't want a single engine mono without thrusters, but I love my twin sticks without thrusters, which puts me into a Cat. Best of both worlds?...

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  4 роки тому

      For a expedition-style recreational dive operation, I don't see a deal-killing downside to a sailing cat, but there would be a few things to consider. First of all, would be weight. You can't load a cat like you can a monohull. They get slow and sluggish in a hurry. Then would be the speed. If you are in a limited geographic area, no biggie. But if you need to consider twice the travel time, might not work if distances are large. For full-time just plain living aboard, I would never give up my sails. To be able to go vast vast distances relying on almost no fossil fuel....that's magic to me.

    • @rabukan5842
      @rabukan5842 4 роки тому

      @@TheOKellys You hit the nail on the head about living aboard and the "almost no fossil fuel" comment! I do feel guilty with my twin M.A.N. 510 diesels. But, as you implied, I can get to dive spots much quicker, and never have to rely on wind. I just go. My 50' motor yacht has a lot of space (3 cabins and 3 heads, 2 with showers,) and it can handle the weight. We do technical diving (I'm also a cave diver,) so unless we're using rebreathers, we have a lot of tanks on board, even with only 3 or 4 divers (I won't take more. I don't do it for the money as I am a professor.) To match the living space, I'd need at least a 55+ foot monohull. The Cat definitely has the space, but as you said, I'd be concerned with the weight. So if I was to end up on a Cat, I would probably not do dive charters, or we would only use rebreathers (my charters are all high level military technical divers.) But I want to add, I am very glad I found your channel! You two are wonderful at telling stories, especially when you're instructing. That's the key to being a good teacher, and that you are. Keep up with the technical talks (instruction.) You have a lot of knowledge and experience. I don't need to watch any more inexperienced sailor diving channels. I want to learn more about sailing, and what it's like to live aboard... Sorry for the length, I'm a writer/poet. :) Thanks for the conversation. Fair winds and following seas!

    Just found your videos - love them! Since you come from a monohull to catamaran, I have some questions. The answers may or may not be the same :)
    1. Why did you make the switch from mono to cat?
    2. Whats the biggest improvement you've noted since going cat, and what do you miss about the mono?

      Rusty W good questions. Definitely going in next video. We went cat this time for two reasons. 1) we wanted to have family join us and be comfortable. 2)we thought we MAY want to give chartering a shot someday down the line. There’s a number 3 really too, which is our dog Sugar is getting pretty old and getting around on our last boat, a monohull, was very difficult. What is the biggest improvement with the cat? There are so many but it boils down to livability. It’s also safer to go fast on a cat. What do I miss about monohulls? A lot actually. We will buy another mono when we are done living aboard. I miss the feel of a tiller in my hand on a little sloop short tacking upwind on a river or lake. I miss the much smaller marina and yard bills. However, for what we are doing right now, which is cruising full time, nothing beats a catamaran. Great questions Rusty. Thank you, and have a good weekend!

      @@TheOKellys Thanks! Great info - appreciate the candor. I know this discussion can be very "heated" for some folks. I keep going back to there's no perfect boat, just the perfect boat for what you do. It's interesting to see what appeals and what doesn't to the different camps. One other observation I've noted is that for similar LOA, the cabins tend to be a bit smaller in the cat (since they are in narrow hulls), but the "living space" is HUGE and above the waterline. Thanks again for a great and informative channel.

    As a lifelong sailor and pilot, couldn't help but get a ringing in my ear when you said, after that long passage (I swear they make a milkshake out of MY memory) you liked the question about tight temperature gradients. Guessing you meant pressure gradients?

      He was asking about tight temperature gradients and thunderstorms. When it comes to thunderstorms, temp gradients CAN (not always) be a better way of looking at the mesoscale processes....to be more specific, it's the theta-e gradient, or the difference in both temperature and moisture over space. Tighter temp/moisture gradients have better potential for firing storms and keeping them active under their own dynamics. Think dry-lines, as opposed to frontal boundaries. What often forces that activity in the first place? Well, pressure gradients and the resulting winds. So it is all inter-related of course. But he was asking about something I said in a previous video. The 46 and 48 are very different boats. I just love the 46 in about every way. If I were chartering or entertaining big groups frequently, I would opt for the 48. It's a amazing how many pilots I meet out here. I guess if you like to ride the wind you like to ride the wind! I'm trying to convince my brother to buy a plane and if that happens I plan to be flying a lot more. Cheers! Nick

    Don't hold back with the tech/weather stuff. It's important inside dope. More like this!

    Really Enjoyed the detailed overview of weather, navigation, charting the course taking into account sea states, and reading cloud patterns and tides. The devil is in the details.
    Oh wow Maine ! .. I have a relative in Harpswell Maine ..
    There's at least 2 Bristol Channel Cutters up there I want to look at. Also, Would it be too much to ask you to do a series or at least 1 video on the ownership of your Freedom 44 Cat/Ketch ? 1.) Comfort 2.) Performance 3.) Cost of Ownership/maintenance etc. Thank you. There are a few sailing videos but kind of thin on any detailed information. Say hello to the swimming pigs for me LOL. Have a blessed Easter. Thanks.

      Thank you for the comment! My friend Pat and I have a running joke about the pigs....hey man, have you seen the pigs?....they swim! Lol. Farm animals on white sand beaches. The most hilarious part are the megayacht helicopters landing on the beach and out pop a family with a basket of carrots and apples for the pigs... crazy! We had the Freedom 33, not the 44. Great performance, very comfortable even in decent sea. Unfortunately we don't have much video of that period of our cruising. We were mostly into still photos at that point, but PERHAPS we can do something. I loved that boat. I can see buying it back in a few years. Best, Nick O

      Thanks Brian. Not too many miles for a couple weeks, but I'll focus on that before we do some miles on the leg north. Appreciate the feedback. Nick O

      I'd be really interested in your planning to go to Maine as I would like to go up there for the hurricane season, if we close on a boat. Thanks

      Yes, definitely going to do that. Probably start looking for a window in two-three weeks. Congrats on the boat. Hope it works out.
