- (Posted by Ray Glasser.) Here is another "Cleveland Tech Report" that I produced for Kerry Decker's "NightLife" cable-TV show that he produced and aired in the 1980s. This show is an in-depth look at the very first Betamax, which was sold by Sony in late 1975....the LV-1901. It was known as the "Betamax Console" because it was a console - a 19" Sony Trinitron TV coupled with a Betamax VCR that recorded up to 1 hour. It also had 2 TV tuners, so you could watch one channel while recording another channel at the same time! This show was produced in 1985. (I still have this unit, but both the TV and Betamax are broken).
Wow, looking back on somebody looking back on the BetaMax.
Very enjoyable. Thanks, Ray.
Very interesting but home video has been around since before 1975. Telcan made a VTR (real to real) in kit form in 1963. The first one to not be a kit was the Sony CV-2000. The Sony LV-1901 Betamax in this video wasn't even the first one to use cassettes, Philips made a short lived cassette format in 1970.
We got our Betamax Christmas 1977. It was not a console model and actually did not feature everything you see here in the 1975 model. But it was an excellent machine and very well built, very sturdy and tough.
Was it an SL-8200?
Fivos Sakellis Late 1977 would have either been the SL-7200 (though it was pretty much obsolete by then and likely selling for a cheap price) or (more likely) the SL-8200, which I believe was introduced in March of 1977.
Great video Ray, love the tech reports keep em coming.
wow this was ahead of its time
+1 for the recording off a tube-based camera. None of that CCD rubbish, we want the smearing and the burn-in :)
And manual focus of course!
Very cool! If I had the room, I'd own one of these! I also enjoyed the old tube sensor camera used to record this, I've always enjoyed that look for some dumb reason! :)
Przepiękny sprzęt 💕👍💪
W czasie kiedy pojawił się na świecie to u nas w Polsce kosztował tyle co dom jednorodzinny... Niestety u nas nie było szans nawet go zobaczyć a gdzie tu kupić....
Ray - are you able to upload "The Downfall of Beta" episode referred to in this video at 14:30 (?) - would love to see that!
I never did do that show....sorry!
Perfect for building a Ghoul library!
I just had one arrive that I purchased on Ebay. Can't wait to get it fired up.
Was there a converter to play 8-tracks?
Is it possible to get both the TV & VTR repaired and restored?
Possibly....since this unit is now SO old, parts are incredibly hard to get!
Glad to hear that, seeing as it'd be awesome to see a demonstration in time for home video's 40th birthday next year
Leave it to Sony WOW!
Interesting how this video feels like a youtube review. I guess if you wanted to be an indie content creator, that's what you did back then.
