Yeah tube tv's from the 90's and early 2000s did the same thing

    • @19seventy97
      @19seventy97 4 роки тому +45

The reason is because they run on valves, and valves require heat.
For a TV of this age, you had to wait for the internal valves to heat up and start working fully before the TV tube (which is also a valve) so then you had double the wait as the CRT had to warm up.
Around the mid-late 60s, transistor TVs started to be introduced, cutting the warm up time dramatically, you’d only have to wait for the CRT to warm up, as the transistors, which replaced valves, did not require heat.
Thats also why on 60s and after TV sets, the sound came on before the screen.
There were some interesting hybrid TVs (which used valves and transistors) that used transistors for the visual section, and valves for the audio section, meaning the screen and sound would be synchronised; The sound would get louder as the screen grew brighter.

I'm sick of the world, I went to an alternative reality 3 years ago, it was called sellasillin, I don't know if it was a dream, bit it felt real as anything, death didn't exist, I tried to explain it to them, but they didn't understand, I told them it was like a fire being extinguished. Birth didn't exist, population stayed the same, how everyone got on earth was like what heaven is to us...... a mystery. I showed them my smartphone. They didn't understand at first, but then I showed them the moving images, the sound. They never saw anything like it, they didn't even have any technology old or new to judge it on. When I recorded them and played it back, they were astonished that I captured the real world on my tiny box, and played it back, I'm saying you all don't know how good u have it, u are living in a constant acid trip and have become numb to magic of it all.

I grew up with CRTs in the 90s. Many had built-in warming circuits that allowed the CRT to come on almost instantly. One evening the warming circuit failed in our TV after a lightning storm. I remember it warming slowly like that and my Dad commenting that he had to wait for the tubes in the audio circuit to warm up when he was a kid in the 60s. Now my kids watch on an LCD screen. Both old radios as well as old TVs that used tubes had to literally "warm up" before you could hear or see anything. Notice that the sound comes on first, before the picture appears. I'm old enough to remember this process, as well as how the picture immediately shrank down to a glowing dot in the middle of the screen when the television was turned off. That dot would linger for a few seconds, gradually getting dimmer. As a very little kid I would sometimes sit up close to the screen to watch this happen.

... Good *GRIEF,* that TV console background left looks *very* much like the revolving RCA beast that we had in the 1950's. It took ages to warm up, had that collapsing neutron star brilliant dot when turned off, and reeked slightly of ozone. Peering through the back composite panel's ventilation holes revealed a glowing orange Manhattan skyline of vacuum tubes which, when burned out, my Dad would pull and we'd go to a store and test them, buy new ones, and reinstall 'em ourselves.
We got NYC broadcast TV on a B&W antenna strapped to our chimney; I helped my Dad install it. It looked like a box kite skeleton when assembled. I thought Dad was Superman.
TV wasn't broadcast on a given channel for hours at a time during both day and night-- instead you'd get that focus card thing with the Indian Chief on it. 2 was CBS, 4 was NBC, 5 WNEW, 7 ABC, 9 WOR, 11 WPIX, 13 NET (PBS). UHF was for the future.
Little did that enthralled little blonde boy know that one day, at the age of 71, he would be typing out this *Comment* for the entire world to read on a SciFi gizmo called a 21.5" MAC Pedestal.
    *-- How cool is that?*

I was five in 1958 and remember an old Admiral TV my dad bought from a TV repair shop. It had a semi square 19 inch screen in a metal gold and gray metal cabinet. It was a "Table Top" model. it was about two feet long. When we'd turn it on it would take a minute for warm up and an image with sound to appear. The thing would warm up the room after being on for an hour. Good times.

I know that this TV model looks terribly antiquated. But this was the beginning of TVs. There would never be flat screen digital smart TVs if not for the old cathode ray models. Beautiful Admiral set.

In a way.... One that could cast very accurate shadows. And lots of little people or drawing paper inside. That's what I thought when I was little. But I knew somehow that probably wasn't right because there was no sign of little people and animals or excess paper!

I used to have a 58 RCA Victor like the one to the left at the beginning of the video. Tube was burnt out and hardly had a picture. Gutted the internals and my friend turned it into a fish tank. I still have an intact 1948 RCA Victor "eyewitness" 9t240 television similar in design to this unit but I just dont have the know how to work on it. I plugged it in 5 years ago and the tube flashed then it went black. If you plug it in now all of the lamps glow and the gun on the picture tube glows but I think there is no high voltage. Also probably all the capacitors are shot. Either way I am just keeping it in my basement for preservation but like I said no chance of it working unless I find someone to work on it.

Ralph bought a TV once in co-ownership with Norton. They started fighting about access rights so he had to get rid of it and we never saw a TV again in the Kramden apartment.

I believe that was "Kramden vs Norton" episode from The Lost Honeymooners. Interesting that the CRT Ralph pulled from the TV set had gone to air, most likely a defective picture tube used as a prop.

I used to own the large RCA Victor Deluxe that you have in the back of the video. My tube was burned out. I do however have a 1949 RCA 9t240 that I need help resurrecting. On the 58 all I had to do was replace a few vac tubes but the 9t240 does not want to even play a crackle through the speakers. It does have all WAX caps but I don't even know where to go with those

When I was a kid our tube tv wouldn't start one snowy Friday early evening. My dad called the tv guy but he couldn't come out. My dad knew the tube that burnt out and took it out and we headed out into the snow to the store and bought a new tube. He put the tube in and we watched 'the wild wild west' that night. A memory locked in my head. You have to realize too that tv antennas would be affected by so many things. Birds, bad weather and the worst thing; a wind storm could blow over the antennas. The real magic came in the late 60's for us, colour tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!
