  • In March of 2012, we brought together six of the most respected authors in the field of tank history, and battered them with questions submitted by the World of Tanks playerbase. You are watching the result of this four-hour Q&A.
    Steve Zaloga
    Harry Yeide
    Hilary Doyle
    David Fletcher
    Rob Griffin
    Kenneth Estes
    In this part:
    02:35 Why the word "tank?"
    04:30 What actually brought the development of the tank about?
    07:45 How much influence did Liddel-Hart or Guderian have? (Then other officers)
    15:00 Did Patton prevent development of M26?
    18:13 Interview with Steve Zaloga
    Feel free to discuss this video on our forum:

      This is a little bit of a late response, but in the chieftains most recent Q&A he elaborated on that a little bit. He said it didn’t bring the level of viewership they were hoping for, so as far as a business venture goes it was unprofitable. However he certainly would like to do another one if given the opportunity.

    WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED TODAY :
    1) The exact origin of the term "tank" is impossible to find, but it's globally is found in the region of finding a way to hide its development through language, and borrowing a common word.
    2) The tank is not a sudden invention, it carries on a proud century-long tradition of armoured warfare which began with the armoured train, vital for the latter part of the XIXth century and armoured car, popular in the early XXth.
    3) Among the most influential names in the tank world are not necessarily Guderian and Littleheart, known because their books got translated in this language ; Estienne was very influential in French development, some Russian guy I can't manage to find the name of also was important (The Russians built loads of tanks in the interwar, often collaborating with Germany), Patton also drove American design quite a bit as did Eisenhower, influenced by WWI.
    3b) Patton was not responsible for the delay of the M26 Pershing ; he was terrible at tank (in terms of design and technicality) but it wasn't his fault and it didn't matter anyway.

      Johan Faul Jesus where did this hostility come from it’s just a joke post. It’s also partly meme. The chieftain is regularly compared to Ian McCallum of forgotten weapons. Who himself is known as gun Jesus. The chieftain is held in similar regards in terms of his knowledge of tanks and armored warfare. So there’s kind of a religious meme version of him as well.

  • @BobSmith-dk8nw
    @BobSmith-dk8nw 4 роки тому +1

    Just a comment here on Belton Cooper's blaming Patton for the lack of M-26's.
    IIRC (and I may not - as I cannot find my copy of Death Traps) the reason Cooper blamed Patton - was that somehow he and Patton were both at some demonstration or meeting or something in Britain - where Patton said what Cooper said he said about the Pershings. Now - being a junior officer who was probably at the event because of his job as an Ordinance Officer who had seen a lot of blown up American Tanks - he might not have been aware of where these issues were really decided. Being as impressed by Patton (one way or the other) as most junior officers would be - he probably THOUGHT that what Patton said here was a determining factor in the M-26's deployment - when what Patton was probably doing - was just echoing Army Policy. Of course ... I wouldn't be surprised if Patton, being the ever modest person he was ... wanted people to think he had a deciding role in such things ...
    However - given Pattons long involvement with the development of American Armored forces
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Patton
    it really shouldn't be a surprise to think that Patton's opinions wouldn't be considered - whether they really were or not.
    If someone else can find their copy of Death Traps and check on that - that would probably be better than my memory. I normally - would just go buy another copy ... but I've done to much of that lately ... and need to cut back ...
    .

    • @TheChieftainsHatch
      @TheChieftainsHatch  4 роки тому +1

      I have the book, the demonstration he and patton were both at were for the hedgerow cutter to be placed on the M5 Stuart. When he comes to the M26, he simply says "Patton got his way", and then the book goes off in the next paragraph on some erroneous tangent about tank doctrine and Eisenhower changing it.

    • @BobSmith-dk8nw
      @BobSmith-dk8nw 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheChieftainsHatch Thanks Nick. That incident is the only thing I can think of for him believing that Patton had more of a say in this than he did.
      One thing about a lot of the people in the military - is that they don't actually know all that much about what's going on. They know their particular job - but when it comes to a lot of other things ... they have a lot of ideas that aren't well founded.
      One factor in that I might attribute to their age. When I was in the Marines - I was 18 to 20 years old and a lot of what I knew came from playing Avalon Hill games like Panzer Blitz in High School - yet - I still knew a lot more about military history and technology than the other guys in my unit. Most of them just wanted to get drunk, get laid and get out. Compared to most people - Cooper at 27 or so at least had an interest in a lot of these things because of his job.
      One of the articles I read on this tended to blame the Ghost Writer for making personal contributions to the content. I'd wonder about that too.
      Anyway, thanks again for looking that up ... I tried to find my copy but ... it's buried somewhere under mounds of other books, tapes and dvd's ...

    from what I remember the 90mm gun never had an anti-tank shell like the German 88 and Soviet 85 guns did. Or at least not an effective shell. Plus there was a need to create an entirely new production line at whatever car factory the government awarded the contract to. Plus the question of how to get it through the average rail tunnel and over the average railbridge in America, which was one of the reasons for the Sherman being the size it was.

And joining as an officer is harder than joining to be just another trooper, there's a lot more expected of you. And also, Patton was promoted for his successes in battle... But I see I'm talking to someone who knows shit about how armies work or the history of Patton and has an inclination towards spreding conspiracy theories.
