Voez Review - Switch (Includes Docked Mode) - Tarks Gauntlet

- Voez is the popular rhythm game by rayark that took the world by the quietest storm i've ever seen.
By this I mean the game has over 10 million downloads to its name yet few people are talking about it. When it made it's way to switch the game did not support docked mode or controller support, and now that it's in there it's high time somebody take a look at it!

To anybody wondering why I didn't use the games music in the video.. it is all licensed music. If I use it and try to avoid copyright claims that means slowing down or speeding up the tracks, or changing the music every 10 seconds. If the gameplay looks fun youtube/google can find you examples of the songs in the game.
Lastly, apologies if it looks like I'm playing like an ape. It's just hard to play through and around a camera.

If it looks like I'm playing like an ape I apologize. Trying to play around a camera and not cast a reflection is a bit of a pain. As always folks I appreciate the views! I'm always checking in on the comments and I look forward to seeing what you all have to say. While this game may lean on "Too easy to perform well" performing perfect and S ranking or FCing some of the harder tunes is never an easy task. If you played before what's the hardest tune you S ranked?
If it's anime games you want then PS4 all the way man!
And between the Wii-U and switch, 100% the switch. There's only a handful of games left on Wii-U that if the switch gets there's almost no point in ever having a Wii-U. Those games being Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Mario Maker, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Smash 4, Fatal Frame V and maaaaaaybe yoshi's woolly world. That said I do love the Wii-U. It had so much potential but it was sadly under utilized.
weazilyfoxtrot 0907 I would never laugh. The PS3 rocks. I don't get rid of my older consoles when new ones come out. I still turn on my PS3 quite a bit.
Good review man, I'm a sucker for music rhythm games!
True, so very true, though getting the max score, and in turn a higher grade than B, you’ll need precise timing with your notes. Only insane people reach for that goal, but it must be noted that even though flailing helps clear the songs with little effort, you’ll only be reward so well as a result.
Now, let’s talk about the Firefly Diaries.
This is true, I've only s ranked a small handful of tunes and b ranked many more. Strangely enough I don't recall ever seeing an a rank lol.
And I have many tales of the firefly diaries haha. Some good.. some tragic... some that drove me insane.
I wish it was more organized like a list
Love this game!!! Amazing played handheld with touch screen...docked mode with buttons is eh but stay with handheld mode and you will be able to experience a truly amazing game
Your cat is really good at that!!
i’ve been playing this game since i was in elementary crazy to see it on switch i’m so glad everyone loves it as much as i do
Props for adding "game overs' are a failure of game design" reference
put way too many hours into this game. love a good rhythm game. thanks for the review m8
LoL 1:26 cracked me up and good to know your musical tastes now :p I really liked Guitar Hero and Rock Band but had written this off because I didn't think you COULD play it in docked mode! But based on your review I think I'd definitely stick to the touch screen. Digging your joy-cons too :p
I can go from listening to persefone (Band in the video) to Joanna Newsom (Folk singer/Harpist) back to back haha.
My musical taste is all over the place but my heart is mostly in prog and metal.
Personally I waiver toward chiptunes and ambient, but my dad was a DJ in the 70's so I grew up with a lot of funk influencing my taste like Sly and the Family Stone and whatnot :p
The game does feature achievement such as "full combo", "All perfect" and "100000 score", so there are incentives to play better.
The controller abuse is unfortunate, though... not sure why they even bothered to add it...
It's a good accessibility feature tho.
what's the name of the chart at 6:06?
Edit: found it, 双龍飛閃-Dual Dragoon- [SP 16]
Nice video! I think there are some issues which you have which are better on the mobile version.
Firstly there is a leaderboard so it's more than just playing against yourself.
Also the keys are way more scarce in the mobile version as they are the main currency they want you to buy, I think it's subjective whether you think that is good or not! (Adding just because you said there isn't any progress in the switch version, which there isn't really).
I think both versions are good and serve value in different ways, but the switch version is naturally better value due to all songs being unlocked but I think the mobile version is more competitive.
The mobile version is honestly just great for how simple and "pick-up-and-play," oriented this game is. It's just nice to pull out your phone while waiting for a bus, tap out a couple songs and then put it away.
The only rhythm games I play solely for the story and not just the music are Deemo, Cytus 2, Lanota, Lyrica, Lethe, and Uta no Prince Sama Shining Live and that's because most of these games were designed with stories in mind. For example Shining Live only exists because it's originally based off of a reverse harem romance game series that got 4 seasons of anime plus a movie and people really wanted to play the songs they heard in the romance games and in the anime so Klab was like, let's make a rhythm game that has fully voiced and animated character models with some of the stories also being fully voiced by the voice actors used in the anime series. I really love the story in Deemo and Cytus 2, the story in Lanota is not finished but it's a great mystery that I'm dying to find out more about. Lyrica has an interesting Chinese based story but I haven't played enough of it yet and for Lethe I don't know enough of the game to give an opinion but from what I have seen of the story, each song's background is interactive and has to do with the story and the art is beautiful.
I've been playing this game before it hit switch, glad it's on the port though, still wish Voez had an offline mode like Cytus.
Thank you! I was a little confused about what the controls were. It's a little hard for me to wrap my head around the direction arrows with the L/R buttons tho - my brain thinks in terms of which hand would be doing the action, not which direction. lol
Have you played superbeat xonic?
Thankyou for the video♥️♥️♥️
Can’t wait to get my switch!! Definitely getting some niche rhythm games like this one, and maybe Deemo/Musynx if I don’t mind importing the US version (sob)
Also I love your cat. Adorable
They were very interested in what was going on lol
Musynx is not very good to be honest, especially because it's 30 USD. I would recommend Lanota, it's only 15 USD and have a better overall experience, the only bad thing is that it never got song udpates like Voez. Superbeat: Xonic is also good, but its 30 USD and updates are not free, and DLC is overpriced.
I play rhythm games like this just to get better at the song, it's mainly there to as a memorization test.
Heyo! Can you review Arcaea?
I wonder if someone could invent a similar game that can be projected to someone's back (or body part with large surface) for massage therapy.
Cosmic Horror Romance
BREAKING NEWS: *Chiropractor accidentally finds the cure for arthritis while playing Japanese video game song “FREEDOM DiVE” on patients back*
Nice review! I'm a sucker for rhythm games and Voez looks like it'll be up my alley. However I wish the button mashing to win/tapping randomly to win puts me off a bit, as most rhythm games usually have some sort of way to combat that, such as breaking your combo or something. Since you liked Voez, have you tried out Musynx on Switch too? It's similar but has full controller support and is new on the market for right now. I will note that like Voez, it has no progression system/story whatsoever except for "ranks" on beating your score.
I haven't tried it no. Up to my elbows in octopath traveler right now haha.
Since u really like rhythm games can u plz recommend some rhythm games please ?
Can you play is offline??
I actually forgot it was getting a physical release. Definitely going to pick it up soon.
North American physical release is coming out in the summer. I had imported mine.
I downloaded it on the Switch shortly after the Switch came out. It was one of the first games I downloaded.
The artwork is really good lol
I have always been terrible at rhythm games 😅. I did enjoy some of the DJ Max games on the PSP however. Despite how bad I may be at these games, I like to play them for the music and visuals lol.
I like that cat! It's so cute :3
When the cat tried to play lmao
0:03 - But...it makes sense in context.
Anyway, the game looks interesting enough, reminds me a lot of "Deemo" in fact, but it's just not my cup of tea. Outside of not owning a Switch and not really being much of a Rhythm game player, touchscreen controls in general will end up driving me neurotic. Like on my Vita, if there are forced touch controls, I end up wiping the screen constantly for any smudges. And while the controller is an option, as you've noted, it wasn't really made for it in mind.
Not really a knock on the game itself, just a personal thing I have.
There's a good reason it reminds you of Deemo as they're both made by the same developer.
And I hear all your issues loud and clear. The smudge one I'm definitely strikes a cord with me. And yes, in context the title makes sense. More than anything though these words are made up for search engine optimization purposes. Can you image just googling the word "Voice?"
Oh...whoops. I was referring to the latter game, "htoL#NiQ", when I said that it made sense in context.Even then, I meant to bring it up half jokingly.
Sorry about that. I should have been clearer.
No worries. In both situations it makes sense haha. It's just hard to look at HtoL#NiQ and read it as Hotaru no nikki if you don't already know how to read it. I usually just call it "The firefly diaries."
Geeze I must be terrible then... Having so many issues getting higher than a C rank on this game, unless I just straight-up full-combo a song.
nice video thought i'd come and check you out again you got good videos per usual
That was a good review, Keep it up BradWoto's brother XD
Fun Fact: I have a master's degree in music composition with a minor in piano performance. Due to this, I always found these type of music games pointless, but this review is on point. The fact that you can button mash with no penalty is a game breaker imo. I love the kitty cameo mid-gameplay.
Fun fact, I have a masters degree in audio engineering (Live sound, mixing, mastering, editing, recording etc) with a minor in classical composition. I like games like this but one thing that will always drive me nuts is when they add more notes to make it harder, or remove what I consider to be crucial notes to make it easier. I have a natural inclination to play the full melody whether a game tells me to or not. Throws me right off.
Tarks Gauntlet hey! We have a lot in common. 😆
You're not wrong about that. Years of playing instruments to me just kind of makes me default to following melodies with as much truth as possible as opposed to inserting beats like dance routines. That and games like guitar hero which I spent entirely too much time with as a teen really bridged that gap. That's why I do liken this closer to step-mania or DDR without the mat though.
Look at that songs. It's at least 3.
:O Did the price go up 25 USD? Yikes.
It has almost 200 songs now, and still getting updates .Worth the price
I wish it had better organized songs. At least a list.
I never really understood the appeal of games like this. Maybe I'll get it for my cat.
No Entendí Casi Nada :v Pero al menos pude ver como es Jugarlo :v Thanks!
WilliamDan98 básicamente es un juego muy fácil, que nació como juego de celular, en mi opinión vale la pena solo por la música
Cat.
do you write a speech before talking on a video if no them wow damn your clever lmao
I do script haha. Without a script I tend to ramble and repeat myself a lot.And welcome back Amariah. I thought you stopped using this account though and moved to "Amariah Gaming."
Well this game shouldn’t be played docked anyways
I'm a pro of this
I liked Voez when it launched as mobile game but never liked their business model, the songs are too overpriced! It's a relief to see that all songs are free on Switch.
However, all songs being free, there would be practically 0 progression as you mentioned. The way the switch version is built makes it only serve a very small niche -- hardcore rhythm game fans or specifically voez/rayark fans. No wonder it never goes mainstream.
Anyways, the switch version should be good for me. I simply like many of their songs and genuinely enjoy the gameplay. Thanks for the review!!
P.s. I haven't played voez for a long time but "Wilt" and "Devillic Sphere" are both great songs worth trying.
Meh, I enjoy the relaxing aspect of the game. Ofc I've only ever had it on the Switch. I don't really care about "progression" - it's more about calming down/letting go of my stress/anxiety.
I saw this at gamestop the other day. When I get a switch, I'll pick it up, especially since it supports a controller option, I'm not a fan of gimmicky touch controls in games.
You shouldn't get this game if you don't like touch, this is the only way the games works well, the controller option is terrible and makes the gameplay pointless. I have 7 rythm games on switch, and the best to use controllers is Superbeat: Xonic. the only bad thing about it is the fact that it's the most expensive rhytm game on switch, It's 30 USD and has some overpriced DLC.
