Just stumbled upon this gem and I have to say the bloke leading the train in the first clip has the most fantastic pair of Lionel Blairs you could ever hope to see!
I find everyone wishes they had seen something before they were born. The shame of it is that this tramway could have been used as a tourist attraction!
It still kinda sucks that it doesn't run anymore since I would have loved have seen it in person and since I'm a fan of trains and history at the same time and it would have been one of the most fascinating things on the railways in Britain because it very rare you find places like these I'm deeply saddened that it disappeared like over 20 years
What will probably happen is that the council will not realise what a potential asset they have to the town and rip it up. Look at Beeching. While some branches and stations were not viable directly or indirectly to be kept open many that were closed were. If the decision was down to me I'd focus on building a museum at the old station site and, on some opening days-maybe once or twice a week between spring and autumn operate services. Possibly using trams. Also opening up the possibly for the occassional heavy rail railtour. The reason I suggest tram as it is more compatable for road use rather than a 33+a rake of BR mk 2 coaches.
Felixjaz True. I'm sure its doable. I have recently looked at the tramway (or as much as possible) using google street view and you;d need relatively narrow trams if running on a semi-regular basis (like suggested) to avoid as much conflict with other road users and police escorts all the time. The only time I have been to Weymouth was on a railtour and I didn't see the tramway unfortunatly. I know they (unsuccessfully) tried with a Parry People Mover. Maybe a museum is the only viable option? (I speak as a 1) train enthusiast 2) volunteer on aheritage railway and 3) a tourism grad).
Now gone over the last few months. People complained about the tramway being unsafe for cyclists, although that combination doesn't seem to cause a problem in Amsterdam, which has many more of both.
The 33s were great locos. They were mainly used for freight duties with the occasional passenger service. The top speed of these were a respectable 85mph! At the time of writing this 3 are still in service today. 24 were preserved in total.

i did too walk along that tramline towards the habour.everytime i go down there.
Was there an oil terminal on the branch or was the oil loaded onto/off a ship?

So much traffic nowadays compared to those days that it would be nigh impossible to use the railway. Shame though as it was a great spectacle!
You can't beat seeing a train in the middle of a road!! That 33 thinks it's a 37 judging by the sound!
