Who's ready for some cooler weather? How bout ice? Something to look forward to during these last few weeks of summer.

I live in the mid Atlantic region, there was state impoundments I use to hunt when it was froze up. I'd drag my canoe across the ice to the blind then cut a ten by ten hole in the ice with a chainsaw. Half a dozen floating decoys, four mojo's and I would have a duck magnet. It's always nice when the ducks are close enough to use a skeet choke in the gun.

I remember that ice storm in 09. When I was interning in Eureka Springs.
Being from North Dakota, I've never seen ice so thick on thin wire or hearing trees explode from all the ice built up on the limbs causing too much weight!

A really quick way to open up a hole. Set up a trash pump where it's pumping water onto the ice. You make a little hole big enough for an intake pipe and run a hose to where you want the decoys. Ez.

Nice retrieving by the dog. Cold every year I pass the Bank clock in November in Iowa and it will be in the teens for temp. I have a 2 inch limit because 3 inches is just spooky and I don’t want to get my boat stuck.

Excellent! I love your tip using a leave rake to clean out all the ice.
I live and hunt in Alaska. Sweat makes for a cold hunt on icy days. So I peel off most layers whenever walking in or any activity like setting out decoys to minimize sweat. If I do sweat, after setting up, I will change to a dry synthetic T-shirt that I always have in my waterproof river bag. A dry synthetic shirt makes for a warmer sit.

Our cold weather duck hunting here in Alberta is really cold. I usually go out in December for a river hunt where there is some open water. Temperatures are usually 14F to minus5F, and I won't hunt on colder days. The dog stays home, not sending my dog into the river at minus 5. One thing I noticed is LOCATION is key and we only need 7 decoys to be successful. Good thing, because it is usually a long walk to a good spot.

Great tips! I like to use my Crazy Kickers in some spots around the edges of the hole. It adds some good motion against the edge of the ice to keep it from freezing as quickly.

Cold snaps have slightly ruined the last two seasons for me. Beginning of the season was okay but about the 2nd week in October we had a significant amount of ice accumulate on the lakes. The first couple days we had maybe 1/2” of ice at the access which I had no problems with and I actually had the whole lake to myself and it was amazing hunting. On the 4th day there was 2” of ice by the shore and skim ice cover the whole lake. I couldn’t break the ice with my hammer so I backed my trailer onto the ice and then it kinda broke up, I spent almost 1 hour just breaking ice and setting up my spread and that was another amazing hunt. Then of course the next day the lake was completely covered with ice and wasn’t safe enough IMO to break ice to hunt. The following week we had a heatwave which took care of the ice but the hunting was extremely stale after that cold snap.
This is taking place in northern MN.

I want to take the time out to personally thank you for this video. This was my season I felt confident to do my first solo hunt. We were iced up and I saw this video I broke a hole maybe 30x30 with 12 decoys. I limited in a hour and a half evening hunt. I went out the next day with my buddy and killed 8 birds. I walked out again today and was 1 shy of a limit following your ice hole trick. You've made 3 hunts that wouldn't have happened because I thought ice was game over. Thank you thank you thank you.
Great video one day I'll come get a guided hunt in with you

We break up ice at the ramp w trailer/ boat, then adjust/trim the motor, 1/8 or light throttle....that's your ice eater to open the ramp. Break ice 2-3" on the way out, then same as above ( bow on bank) when we get to our spot. Duckwater Bay 18'

Up here in Illinoiz our drainage ditches and everything freezes but ...
If you hunt upland game you find places where water dribbles out of a field tile into the ditch and keeps a hole open. Knowing where all those open little holes are turns into a pond hopping scenario. As a kid most of my ducks were killed this way. Back when we actually had calendar migrations and real winter.

I live to hunt late season iced up conditions. Safety first. My lab left the boat after a duck and got trapped under the ice. I could see her and dove in. Saved her but almost drown then almost froze getting back to land.

being a Texas boy, when I lived in Colorado for a few yrs, I never had to break big ice before, never even walked on a frozen lake before. I loved breaking ice at 3 or 4 in the morning. moving big chunks under the ice and hearing all the crackling and awesome sounds that came with the ice moving out to the main part of the lake. I miss the experience, but not the temps. too cold for this Tx guy.
    love the videos
good luck this season and stay safe.
oh can you make an ID video on ducks.
I bet you have a bunch of footage to do this. especially the different type of divers.
ps I really love spoonbills. Which is your favorite bird other than the mallards and pintails?

Ice Eater’s are the way to go in controlling ice on the freeze up. Pond aerators are also a good way in keeping in from freezing up. Anyway in keeping water moving and from locking up is key. I learned this a few years back especially in my area if everything freezes up ducks go to our rivers and will stay there until it thaws. When it thaws they come back with more ducks that have moved in. A few years back we were holding a fair number of ducks in a spot it got very cold and everything froze up in a matter of days ducks left after the thaw hundreds came back with all their friend. During the whole time it was so cold we ran the ice water nonstop for 2 weeks to keep the hole open and the result is the picture you see next to my channel. When busting a hole open it’s best to keep it kinda small and keep it stirred up so it won’t freeze back up. We use chainsaws axes sledgehammers and hoes to move and break the ice

    • @gooseflatwaterfowlers
      @gooseflatwaterfowlers 4 роки тому

Got to have snow and ice up north the Great Lakes need to lock up solid to make them push down. I really think during the year ducks migrate up and down the flyway they move with fronts. For example we might get a big front that stops in Illinois and those ducks stop in southern Illinois northwest Arkansas and Missouri when the front moves out the migrate back up north same goes if the front makes it further south and when it moves in they migrate down just far enough and when it moves out they reverse migrate back. 2 things make ducks move and that’s weather fronts rain and warm/cold fronts and gun fire.
